"It's not always too straightforward realizing how we can support each other in times of conflict. As an individual, one can easily feel discouraged to help aid in humanitarian efforts due to the lack of visible impact. 

During the past months, I started seeing how many artists, labels, and other creative outputs that I admire and cherish, have been putting together many top-quality compilations, special releases, and other creative initiatives to raise funds to provide humanitarian support to Ukraine and its people. 

In the midst of this wave of creative expression to help others, I also got inspired to do my own small contribution by recording this mix. All the tracks played come from many of these initiatives that inspire to propagate light and remind ourselves about solidarity and unity. 

Let us not forget that same as the tragedies occurring in Ukraine, there are many other conflicts spread around the globe that also need attention and support. My hope is that others can follow this example and use their talents and good intentions to keep helping each other, in any way they can. Every contribution makes a difference, no matter how small it may seem."

Inspired By Others: A mix by Polo Alto

You might have first heard of Earth Trax under his original alias, The Phantom. Or maybe his given name, Bartosz Kruczyński, which he uses for gorgeous ambient music. Or Pejzaż, where he cuts up Polish records from his vast collection. Or as part of Ptaki, another sample-based project he did with fellow Warsaw resident Jaromir Kamiński. You get the idea—dude makes a lot of music. And a lot of it is very good. Earth Trax is the project that really made us swoon, with a soft-focus, sunset-hued meld of techno, breakbeat, progressive house and trance.

On wonderful records like LP1, melancholy is the operative word, but Kruczyński isn't exactly a sadsack. It's more complex than that, nailing the tears-on-the-dance-floor vibe with the part that many people forget: it's still club music. That's why tracks like "Dream Pop," which kicks off this mix, are so successful—they're heavy but never weighed down by emotion, with a skip in their step and a robust low-end to go with the sighing vocals. 

Kruczyński's RA Podcast is something of an excavation of this sound, using his own tracks and those of like-minded producers to sketch out a style that's equal parts rousing and pensive, midtempo but still propulsive. Over two and a half hours he lets these tracks breathe and leisurely mixes them together, almost like an old-school progressive house double mix CD but in the more vibrant, varied clothes of today—before it starts to unravel into an extended, beatless outro that's worth sticking all the way until the end for.

Earth Trax Mixtape for KALTBLUT Magazine

Dj Sotofett and LNS have established themselves as independent artists not bound by the convention or shackles of ‘industry’. Over the years they have released some of the most innovative and interesting records across a plethora of record labels including Wania, Freakout Cult, Honest Jon’s, SUED and many more.

For years Dj Sotofett has been the powerhouse behind the Sex Tags family of record labels and has never been one to be pigeonholed often releasing music which is hard to place or define. It’s wild and chaotic – just the way we like it. Over the years he has dabbled in Dub, Techno, House and beyond. One thing is for sure though, it’s always been weird and wonderful.

LNS has formed a strong relationship with the Sex Tags family of labels, releasing a number of records in collaboration with Dj Sotofett via the imprint. She has her own label, LNS and has a busy and consistent release schedule which leads to her records being found in the bags of discerning collectors and DJ’s all over.

In recent times the pair have formed a close relationship with Tresor, the longstanding Berlin label and club which has been pivotal in the evolution of underground Electronic music. It appears the pair share a similar sensibility to the DIY ethos which has always been associated with the club.

This year saw them follow up the release of their album on the label with a new EP on the imprint.

Rising Polish DJ and producer Bartosz Kruczyněski is a man of many aliases. His releases come in the form of ambient and minimal leaning works under his own name, sample-based explorations of Polish heritage as one half of Ptaki and new age infused deep house under the ominous title of The Phantom. Bartosz’s musical creations as Earth Trax, often with long-time friend and collaborator Newborn Jr., have been picked up by such labels as Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section, Lost Palms, Les Yeux Orange and our very own Phonica main label in recent years.
