Phonica AM is a new imprint curated by staff member Luther Vine focusing on a more ‘after hours’ sound. Think tripped-out Techno, Minimal, Electro and every shade in between.

Voodoos and Taboos are up first with the ‘If We Were’ 12”, a four track EP drawing on strains of Tech- House, 90s Breaks and Techno/Electro. The mysterious duo follow up a string of high calibre releases on their own imprint which have gained substantial hype both upon release and on the second-hand market, with Discogs prices skyrocketing.

A1 ‘Doorway’ is a nuanced, spacey Techno banger with intricate synth licks, underpinned by a pumping groove. Title track ‘If We Were’ is a rich and emotive track, blooming pads, euphoric motifs, fortified by a futuristic jacking groove.

On the flip, ‘Witch House’ is wonky, bassline driven Tech-House with a hefty splash of acid. Final track ‘Holyday’ is a refined modern homage to 90s rave, all swinging break beats and slick vocal fragmenta- tion.

Voodoos & Taboos - If We Were EP [PHONICAM001]

London record shop and label Phonica Records launches new sub label Phonica AM. Curated by staff member and DJ Luther Vine, the label will provide a home for a new take on 90's inspired ‘proper’ tech house, and music within this ball park. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

To kick start this new label, Luther approached the mysterious duo Voodoos and Taboos to release 'If We Were' EP. So far, the two producers have only released EPs and LPs on their own record label Voodoos And Taboos Records, and made few appearances on compilations. We don't know a lot about them - not even their face - but the music speak for itself. "I was blown away by the music after discovering their production through stocking their first two releases," said Luther. Indeed, it is not until he heard their tunes that he took the decision to start a new Phonica imprint. "With all due respect to some of the music being released at the moment, there seems to be an over saturation with this rehashed 90s Prog House resurgence... The first release on Phonica's newly founded label Phonica AM, curated by staff member Luther Vine, is set to drop in September to ring in some musical autumn madness in four acts. Responsible for the latter is artist duo and label heads of an eponymous imprint Voodoos and Taboos, who deliver a four-tracker that smoothly combines influences across genres, such as (Tech-) House, 90s Breaks and Techno/Electro. The EP's title track, If We Were, comes in with a partly jacking House groove that's compressing character adds a futuristic note as it sounds like one would imagine beats in space that are staggered transmitted. Provided with a spacey and recurring chord sequence as well as supporting pads If We Were is a worthy way to create those early morning vibes on dance floors pooling those emotions that emerge at this specific time in one track  – a quality Phonica AM has dedicated itself to as the label name already suggests and Voodoos and Taboos perfectly turn into practice with this track and EP.
