Over the course of his two decade career, Phonique has never been one to stick rigidly to a single sound or genre, and over the last few years – during visits and performances in places like Jordan, Ukraine and Armenia – began experimenting with more organic house and melodic sounds in both his sets and the studio. 

“Zatar Music is going to be my main focus, both for my own productions and artists I believe are making extraordinary music. I will of course continue to release on other labels, but Zatar gives me the opportunity to fully explore the more organic, melodic side of my production. We have some truly incredible releases planned which I can’t wait to share with you”, says Phonique.

The inaugural release on Zatar Music will come from the aforementioned Korolova, on Phonique’s breakout hit Feel What You Want feat. Rebecca. 

Korolova is a Ukrainian talent who has exploded onto the melodic house and techno scene at impressive speed. In just one year, she played 60 shows in 20 countries, picked up 4.6 million Spotify streams, 30 million views on YouTube and released tracks on influential labels such as AFTR:HRS, Get Physical Music and Armada. Her slick and stylish productions - whether solo or with the likes of Jan Blomqvist, Spada or Tube & Berger - combine rolling drums with delicate keys, evocative vocals and spine-tingling chord progressions.

For her remix of Feel What You Want, Korolova builds on the progressive elements inherent in the original, combining billowing pads and sidewinding synth lines alongside an epic break: a true masterclass in building both tension and atmosphere.

Michael Vater, better known in music circles as Phonique, has carved out a rich niche for himself in the crowded world of electronic music. Widely regarded as one of the nicest guys in the scene, Vater has come a long way from his humble beginnings in Cologne, fully establishing himself as both a father of the Berlin club scene and a much loved ambassador for house and electronic music all around the world. With way over 100 releases and his own boutique house label Ladies & Gentlemen, Phonique has taken his signature grooves all over the world - more than 50 countries at last count. 

With countless production and remix credits plus three full albums under his belt, 'Saudade (Best Of Phonique)' is a timely reminder of what makes this artist such a treasure. With so much material to get through it's a wonder he managed to keep it to 11 tracks. 

Long time collaborator Erlend Øye features twice as a guest vocalist - 'For the Time Being' and 'Casualties' both being essential reference points in Phonique's back catalogue. Originally released in 2005, 'For the Time Being' could be the blueprint for many of today's nu-disco producers, while Antonio Eudi and Bruno Be's Remix of 'Casualties' shares a similar, lush and rolling groove - both are classic Vater - melancholic and uplifting at the same time. 

Another landmark collaboration in Vater's discography was with Ian Whitelaw, whose sublime vocals feature on 'Our Time Our Chance' and 'You That I'm With'. Originally released on Phonique's first album 'Identification' in 2004, 'You That I'm With' is a gorgeous slice of electronic synth pop, while 'Our Time Our Chance' from 2010 is more focused on the deeper reaches of the dance floor, and was widely regarded as one of the tracks of that year. 

Elsewhere on 'Saudade', (Portuguese for a brooding kind of melancholy, and a suitable description of Vater’s signature sound), Phonique continues to display his passion for collaboration with talented vocalists. 'One Step 2010' and 'Feel What You Want' highlight the divine sound of Rebecca while 'Endless Love' showcases Louie Austen - whose 'Glamour Girl' is also included via Phonique's Original Version. His deft touch for creating affecting and beautiful electronic pop music with strong links to the dance floor is fully in evidence on every track, and non more so than his rework of 'Ornette's Crazy' - a huge hit in 2012 on Get Physical that still sounds as thrilling today as it did the day of release. 

Probably the most straight up dance floor track here is 'Divertimento' - a deep burner with slight Latin swing to it - no doubt a result of Phonique's strong links to the underground scene in Brazil.

Remixes by Hyenah, Korolova, Gorje Hewek, and others have earned Zatar tracks spots in Black Coffee’s Spotify playlist and Adriatique’s iconic Cercle set.

2022 also marked Phonique’s residency at Berlin’s renowned club Ritter Butzke, following his debut release on their label. Playing alongside international stars like Korolova and Franky Wah, Phonique continues to inspire with his electrifying performances.

As Identification, his debut album, approached its 20th anniversary, Phonique is planning a special release featuring acoustic reinterpretations and fresh remixes of classics like “For the Time Being feat. Erlend Oye” and “Café Monte Carlo feat. Dixon.” This milestone reaffirms his ability to revisit and reinvent his own legacy.

An unexpected highlight in 2024 was the resurgence of “Feel What You Want” in its slowed version, trending on Shazam charts in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan, and peaking at #15 on the global Shazam charts. This momentum inspired an upcoming “All Mixes” release on Zatar Music, featuring remixes from Korolova, Vintage Culture, Bruno Be, Tom Novy, Aka Aka, and a highly anticipated new version by Ukrainian duo Artbat.

From his trailblazing productions to his residencies and label endeavors, Phonique remains a driving force in house music, pushing boundaries while staying true to the genre’s essence.
