Arrival (ambiance for a painting)

“Hesperus is Phosphorus” presents a series of paintings on glass that must be directly illuminated in order to be seen. These interactive paintings and videos are a reflection on how impossible it is to be absolute within our own identities. Inspired by the duality of proper names as expressed in a famous sentence by semantics philosopher Gottlob Frege, in this exhibition, phosphorescent pigment transforms scenes inspired by popular, classical and baroque iconography into minimalist objects to raise the question: which are they?

The exhibition is part of the on-going transmedia project entitled Shifting Nature. In addition to the phosphorescent paintings and video installations, visitors can download and listen to a 3D audio soundscape on their mobile devices. On selected evenings, a performance will transform human bodies into figures of ambiguous sex by mixing gender-specific movements and gestures.

Lead Artist Bio

Juan Carlos Zaldivar, filmmaker and video artist, completed both his BFA and a Masters of Fine Arts at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Negotiations of inner and outer spaces are at the center of Zaldivar’s work. He is also interested in the relationship between reality and artifice because it often triggers larger questions about our human nature. His work explores the tension between reality and actuality as a starting point to spin other dialogues regarding identity, transculturalism and acceptance at large.
