Horse Category closes out its first year with the third Phonopsia release, Peaks and Troughs, completing the reconciliation with older material that spans these first releases. The three slower techno tracks share little in common besides their tempo, while the faster closing track offers something more DJ friendly.  

The first track, Prepaternal, was initially completed the day before the birth of Phonopsia's first child in 2010. Although the track had been created and recorded entirely on hardware, it was possible to resurrect it in 2020, addressing a few nagging issues from the first recordings. The track was made with late '90s digital synths at a time when everything was going analogue again. Stubbornly ignoring these developments, the focus in the studio at the time was entirely orientated towards sound design for synths that reward exploration, and this mix seeks to fully saturate the listener in that sonic world. 

Secrets of the Pedal Bone was created in early 2021 with nearly all analogue synths at a time when late '90s digital synths were becoming fashionable again. This focus on the newer analogue additions to the studio was an intentional effort to become less distracted by the limitless depth of the digital core. The track also indulges a fondness for "blocky" arrangement that is normally a tempered impulse. For this track it felt correct to leave it be, perhaps because the classic structure fits the classic sounds. 

Ooze was made in 2008 with an early iteration of the all hardware setup that was later used for Nuba Tuba and Prepaternal, and was the first successful product of that shift away from the computer. This track was resurrected in 2020 along with Prepaternal, but only minor changes were made to the drums. Waldorf Q wavetables dominate the palette of this melodically-driven slow techno jam. 

Figuring Out This Damn Jet Pack is the fifth of the tracks from 2006 that came together along with the HC002 material. This is a bit more straight-forward than a lot of Phonopsia tracks, and certainly more percussive than the other material on this release. It's one of the few Phonopsia tracks that attempts to evoke an impression of its name.

This month we have the superb talents of Ryan Blackman for you, Influenced by early 90’s sounds  - FSOL, Aphex Twin and Autechre, along with a myriad other UK electronic music artists Ryan ventured into the Techno clubs of London, by the Mid 90’s experiencing Final Frontier(Club UK), Sabresonic, and most significant of all - LOST. He was exposed to luminaries such as Jeff Mills, Steve Bicknell, Claude Young, Jay Denham, Luke Slater, and many others. A connection with these artists that remains strong today.
Throughout the late 90’s to early 2000’s - he went on to play at, and promote, parties across Europe, with much respected DJ’s and Live Acts  such as Underground Resistance, DJ Rolando, Ben Sims, Stacey Pullen, 65D Mavericks and many others.

These days Ryan continues to collect and play electronic music, presenting a broad range of sounds from ambient to hardcore, and a recent highlight for him was closing the “Campfire Stories” podcast series for legendary Canadian label Silent Season. For Gated, Ryan has packed in an hour and a half of incredible dance music, and also mastered by Plant43! (Big shoutout to Emile)

Better known for his electro output, the UK producer has been writing and storing up atmospheric synthesiser experiments alongside his dancefloor oriented output since his last ambient LP ‘The Countless Stones’ released on Bandcamp in 2020. This meditative, evocative eight track journey is typical of Facey’s beautifully rendered emotional output and is a perfect match for the stunningly atmospheric artwork, also by Facey, which accompanies the album.'

It may not be for everybody but Dub Techno when it's done well, is up there, in the higher echelons of electronic music. You wont really get it until you hear it on a proper sound system,  it just doesn't work on a phone or laptop. You cant flick through it either.
