Headless Horseman is the second release on Phonopsia's new Horse Category label. The music was created entirely in 2006 during a period of intense focus and renewed energy. Headless Horseman gathers four of the five tracks from this period (the fifth track will be released on HC003), which are only now being published for the first time. "Lumina" was the first of these, and was the most refined Phonopsia track at the time, balancing minimal elements with melodic depth to create a techno track that works as well at home as on dancefloors. 

Having finished "Lumina", the sister track "Luna" followed in short order. It cast some elements aside, slowed the tempo to a medium house pace, and added a bassline that pulls the track in a different direction, owing a large debt to the Gemini tracks that were a huge influence on Phonopsia's musical development in the mid-'90s. 

The second pair of tracks started with "Jacqued", unveiling some of the range of the Nord Modular that formed the heart of the Phonopsia palette at the time. The dense beginning makes way for a slower groove that could be house or techno, underpinning a composition that requires the full length of the track to complete its initial pass. Not much later, "Jacqued" was joined by a sibling, "Jacked", which (as the name suggests) converts the fuller techno of its predecessor to a stripped down Chicago format where space displaces depth. Although the palette of the two tracks shares much in common, most of the sounds on "Jacked" have been reduced to their essence to fit the new style. 

With the exception of "Lumina", no more than a dozen people have heard these tracks until now.

This month we have the superb talents of Ryan Blackman for you, Influenced by early 90’s sounds  - FSOL, Aphex Twin and Autechre, along with a myriad other UK electronic music artists Ryan ventured into the Techno clubs of London, by the Mid 90’s experiencing Final Frontier(Club UK), Sabresonic, and most significant of all - LOST. He was exposed to luminaries such as Jeff Mills, Steve Bicknell, Claude Young, Jay Denham, Luke Slater, and many others. A connection with these artists that remains strong today.
Throughout the late 90’s to early 2000’s - he went on to play at, and promote, parties across Europe, with much respected DJ’s and Live Acts  such as Underground Resistance, DJ Rolando, Ben Sims, Stacey Pullen, 65D Mavericks and many others.

These days Ryan continues to collect and play electronic music, presenting a broad range of sounds from ambient to hardcore, and a recent highlight for him was closing the “Campfire Stories” podcast series for legendary Canadian label Silent Season. For Gated, Ryan has packed in an hour and a half of incredible dance music, and also mastered by Plant43! (Big shoutout to Emile)

'Silver Streams is the third ambient full-length from Emile Facey under the Plant43 moniker. Better known for his electro output, the UK producer has been writing and storing up atmospheric synthesiser experiments alongside his dancefloor oriented output since his last ambient LP ‘The Countless Stones’ released on Bandcamp in 2020. This meditative, evocative eight track journey is typical of Facey’s beautifully rendered emotional output and is a perfect match for the stunningly atmospheric artwork, also by Facey, which accompanies the album.'

It may not be for everybody but Dub Techno when it's done well, is up there, in the higher echelons of electronic music. You wont really get it until you hear it on a proper sound system,  it just doesn't work on a phone or laptop. You cant flick through it either.
