To remix a song you love can be hard. I did my best. It's the quickest tempo I've ever worked at, and it contains as you may ironically expect, some surprise turns.

Being on the Heimlich radar for some time, never losing track of Australia’s Phortah has resulted in the very first long play release by Heimlich Musik. Phortah’s debut album “Olua” drifts between the vibrant waves of ten tracks founded on a uniquely emotive sound and compositional style. The album courses a transformative evening, punctuated by a myriad of broken beats and straight four to the floor grooves. Organic performances of strings, vocals, flutes and percussion are featured in combination with analogue and digital synthesis and beat design. Phortah’s sound is at once nostalgic and gritty; incorporating also field recordings and noise. Olua journeys between flowing passages contrasted with abrupt and surprising moments. 

The album was recorded and produced on Gumbaynggirr country in Bellingen and on Newry Island, New South Wales, Australia. The power of the surrounding rivers, forests and ocean have greatly influenced the music. Phortah acknowledges the traditional custodians of this land, the Gumbaynggirr people. Lila Swain recorded her vocals in Berlin. Given the spectrum of sound aesthetics, the album format appeared to be the only logical way to release this unique piece of art.

PREMIERE: Phortah - Ayoca [ Heimlich Musik ]

On 21st April 2019, Germany's Radio FM4: Liquid Radio presented Phortah's first publicly available mix in support of his debut album Olua (Heimlich Musik). 

The mix includes tracks from Olua along with some recently released and unreleased tracks. The journey is a vibrant exhibition of sound design and an exploration of experimental down tempo.

Olua in the Mix for FM4 Liquid Radio

Released in support of Tree Psyde 2019, where I was honoured to close the festival on a stage and dance floor set up like nothing I've experienced so far. Rather than dancing in a large clearing in the bush, one needed to step more deeply into the wilderness to find the dance floor <3

Along with supporting art and music, Tree Psyde Productions work to restore native bushland and wildlife habitat. Check out the rest of the compilation where you can buy the tracks and support what they do.

Pupa [Tranquil Sounds]

In August 2013, a collection of unreleased songs, demos, alternate versions, and in-studio jams by The Mars Volta roughly spanning from 2005 until the Noctourniquet sessions was leaked online. The source of these recordings still remains unknown.

Included in the leak was "y2g" which  sounds like a demo version of Vicarious Atonement, the opening track from Amputechture.  

TMV are one of my biggest influences. I’m grateful to Omar, Cedric and all of the TMV group members and hope this edit does some degree of justice to how much their albums and live shows inspired, moved and healed me over the years <3

Seem To Freeze (feat. Emma Lucia)[Phortah Remix]

Channelling loving presence via impeccable sound design while tending to draw spirited and big hearted dancers to the floor.

Phortah's creative essence is somewhat free. He relates with the living tree, soil, sky, ocean and animal more so than with genre labels.

As an avid, exploratory, improvisational contemporary and contact dancer, his sound is informed by spontaneous rebellion against conditioned movement. Normality and convention are messed with.

"I listen to (feel) my animal body from within the living web which flows beyond intellectual capture.

With cues and guidance from nature, I cultivate visionary and feeling faculties as a part of the process. My music and dance practices are a part of this nourishing work. There has been a role for me to share from this place and I am grateful for all of the invitations and opportunities which have come from those who have recognised Phortah's offering. 

Sound wise, I work with various tools to create sensuous, enveloping auras which are often punctuated by saucy grooves. This aural recipe can be nourishing for humans and landscapes. I'm drawn to delving into deeper work with both.

My work with sound is supported first and foremost by a practice of listening."
