It comes as no surprise to discover we are massive fans of Marcos Valle here at Mr Bongo, but this forgotten and obscure gem from the Brazilian maestro has proven to remain elusive to us until very recently. 

'Girassol' is a lost Brazilian-boogie stunner from 1983. It was originally released as an ultra-rare promo only 7”. Composed by Marcos Valle, Paulo Sérgio Valle and Ribeiro José Francisco, this all-too-short nugget (under 2 minutes) was recorded and pressed on the Valle, Ribeiro & Associados Ltda. imprint for Rede CB De Supermercados. It was a promotional item to be distributed to customers of a supermarket chain as a gift. Due to not having any conventional distribution channels this resulted in the 7" becoming a slippery customer to find. 

It’s a smooth AOR / Brazilian boogie joint with an uplifting chorus. The vibe is reminiscent of the much loved ‘Estrelar' era of Marcos Valle’s glorious recording career, and certainly one for fans of the Lincoln Olivetti, Robson Jorge production sound.

Brazilian jazz sensation channel the futuristic funk of Herbie Hancock on new "Sábado" single, ahead of forthcoming 'Agôra' album for Jazz & Milk. 

We've been fans since the group's 2020 'Angela' album so it's a pleasure to debut their new single. "Sábado", with its funk-infused and electrified future jazz style, pays tribute to the bustling city of São Paulo, where the trio formed. The song features vocalist Zé Leônidas, known for his fiery delivery, riding a groove reminiscent of Airto Moreira, complemented by traditional Brazilian instruments such as cuicas, tamborim, agogo and shakers.

“"Sábado" reflects well the spontaneity that permeated the entire recording of the album. When we got to the studio, we had no idea what we were going to record. We started playing a groove, kind of inspired by Gilberto Gil's 80s albums, and our drummer João started singing this funny song 'Sábado Barrigudão' (Big Belly Saturday) alongside the bass groove and that was that”.

The Greg Foat Group feat. Kat Barnard - Milk and Honey

Blending the influences of traditional folk songs from his native Ahwaz city in Iran with the multitudinous melange of musical styles to be found in the London he has lived in since the age of five, Iman Houssein is a composer and songwriter who is part of the new wave of musical creatives emerging in the global artistic conversation.

His debut release on BBE is a two track digital EP leading with the sensitive and tender vocal on House of Light and backed with the Chick Corea and Theo Parish inspired instrumental track, Theodora. House of light, through the poetry of the lyrics juxtaposed over the backdrop of its sublime and deep toned beats, captures the emotion of seeing and feeling the Creator in the one you love.

Theodora is a more up-tempo instrumental that channels the freedom and virtuosity of a Chick Corea composition with a multi-genre production that is reminiscent of the blending of styles in a Theo Parrish production.

Releasing as a digital, Theodora/House of Light fuses Hip-Hop and RnB with flavours of Jazz, Neo-Soul and House to create an introduction to an artist, producer and composer we all are preparing for.
