Fernando Seixlack, from São Paulo, Brasil, is the latest artist to release on the young and exciting 40% Foda/Maneiríssimo label from Rio de Janeiro; a small CD-R imprint run by DJ Guerrinha e Luca - together they form the electronic music improv group Epicentro do Bloquinho. 

Seixlack's brilliant "Seu Lugar É O Cemitério" is a sun-drenched, melodic and energetic take on the current wave of raw, improvised and highly fucked up experimental House and Techno that's been winning-over discerning electronic music crowds on a global level.

Fernando is also a drummer in two Metal bands from São Paulo - Elma and Polara -, and a DJ/producer as part of the collective Metanol FM, with two Eps prior to this 40% Foda one: Fantasma EP (2012) and Elo EP (2013). He was also featured on the 1st volume of the compilation series Hy Brazil, selected by Chico Dub - programer of the forward-thinking Novas Frequências festival, RBMA collaborator and just general enthusiast of new, exciting electronic music.

We asked seixlacK for a mixtape and he delivered this sonic megalith full of unreleased tracks and pretty obscure, fresh Brazilian jams.

One Eyed Jacks ceased activity in 2017 with a record by Photonz released under a different alias. It was the right time to let go: when the label started, in 2010, there were few electronic music labels in Portugal and a growing new wave of artists that needed to be documented and shown. Along the years, new labels - more capable ones - developed to cater to that need while projects like Rádio Quântica, co-founded by Photonz and Violet, seemed better instruments to carry on the vision of elevating and documenting a fledgling scene. But the itch for editorial expression was never gone and come 2023, One Eyed Jacks is back to life, animated by a renewed trust in the music and visions of how to apply its mysterious power to move, inspire and heal.

As the first single of a larger body of work to be presented later in the year, “Orpheus” is an expression of that same trust: no rushing, no over-production, no masking. Just a minimalistic dance track cooked up over an attempt to use the kick drum sample as also the source for the bassline and the melodies. The result is a bass-heavy, slow-paced house track with playful polyrhythmic layering and a melancholic emotional undertone. Adding to it we’ve got three exceptional producers on the remix: Lisbon’s Kara Konchar and Lake Haze, and Zambia’s SHE Spells Doom.

Lisbon-based Kara Konchar AKA Miguel Béco picks up on the original’s more emotive motifs and builds up a dense storm of heavy drums, unpredictable changes and texturally-rich variations on the melodies, bringing the drama levels way up. Wamya Tembo, known for deadly house hybrids under the name SHE Spells Doom on household labels such as Tresor or Sweat Equity, lends a no-nonsense, lean and mean quality to “Orpheus”, stepping on the gas while retaining a refined sonic signature and a groove not to be messed with. Lastly but definitely not least, in fine contemplative and romantic style, One Eyed Jacks OG Lake Haze AKA Gonçalo took the source elements and carved out one for the lovers and the breakers.

Labour Jacks is a new sublabel of One Eyed Jacks focusing more on techno and club tool, with artworks based on found, accidental art created by labour. The first few releases will showcase glue patterns found in ripped off plaques, where the gesture of the glue application by workers can be quite beautiful and graceful, even if unintentionally.

Second release on my recently inaugurated Labour Jacks comes from a well kept secret from the south side of the Tagus river in Lisbon, @dj-dro-san : a dj and producer that has shared the dj booth with some of the best in the world throughout the 90's and early 00's with a style that is deeply inspired by the raw (and often wonky) tradition of Chicago Techno. His demos were the main reason to start the label. Rough and ready but also creative and sort of unique in the current state of the genre.
