Atypical Presentation

Stripped

Echo, Alpha, Mike

Echo, Alpha, Mike is borne out of the threat of nuclear conflict. The title was influenced by my hobby-like interest of viewing air traffic radar throughout the world. This has introduced me to a form of military communication called an “Emergency Action Message”. I began to learn about EAMs and have found the growing occurrence of them very disturbing, to the extent they have become frequent in recent months. An EAM is an encoded communication between military aircraft and other forces including nuclear-capable ballistic missile submarines, anywhere on the planet. These communications use the NATO phonetic alphabet. 

The instruments of my composition include a full Moog Studio and a large Eurorack console. I think orchestrally when using synthesis. 

One of the tools of my composition is vowel and speech synthesis. I have used this alpha-numeric set of formants to build what would be considered a relative replica of an EAM, wherein I rotate through various numbers and vowels of the NATO alphabet. 

One of the tasks I set out for myself in this composition is very abstract. Owing to the piece being about submarines, I have done my best to live up to my personal challenge: a piece that sounds under water. Throughout the piece, I have introduced many mechanical sounds, generally avoided in silent-running ballistic missile submarines. I have also included under water sonar pings and my version of an EAM in morse code.

The other difficulty was finishing the piece. I know little of this subject but my understanding is: while in the missile bay, during the launch sequence, steam is fired up the bottom of the inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM) and it is ejected to above the water’s surface. The ICBM then ignites the rocket motor above the surface and makes it way to the target.

Prologue: Metal, Mettle, Meddle, Medal.

A theme and variations.  

The first movement (Theme) from my new album.  Going through four words in English that sound the same but mean -entirely- different things. "Metal", like the substance or the music, "Mettle" as in "show us what you're truly made of" or a statement of character and integrity, "Meddle" in someone else's affairs, or a "Medal" on your chest.
