Considered as an artist with an impeccably tight reputation, the bulk of October's output exhumes an enigmatic strain of techno that's currently being pumped through the veins of the underground community. His releases been housed by the likes of Fred P's Soul People Music, BRSTL and Will Saul's Aus Music camp – whilst Smith’s kept himself busy operating TANSTAAFL (There Aint No Such Thing As A Free Lunch) alongside John Osborn. Lately though, it's his stint with the superlative Swedish outfit, Skudge that’s been garnering him the most kudos, releasing both the upstanding Empires EP and, perhaps most notably, this year's Gate 2 Yesterday on Skudge's self-titled imprint. Revealing that he’ll also be releasing his debut album via Skudge, Smith promises that he’ll stray away from his usual material and showcase a body of work that explains “what he’s really about.”

“Techno is a genre known for its dark and powerful sound, but even in a sphere dedicated to no-holds-barred production, Dax J’s tracks stand out as particularly robust and intense.

Take ‘The Wonk’, from his most recent EP ‘The Invisible Man’, which lays down a tough low-end that ploughs forward with relentless energy. A frantic outer texture sounds like an accordion made out of titanium alloy, quivering in-and-out to disorientating effect. It’s a face-melting cut that that bends the mind of any dancefloor that hears it. Last month he took dancers in Berghain through to Monday afternoon with a 10-hour closing set which was undoubtedly transcendental.

The producer is based in Europe’s techno capital Berlin nowadays, but travelling back to his teen years spent listening to d’n’b and jungle while growing up in London provides insight into his vigorous approach to production.

Dax took up DJing aged 15 as a hobby that soon turned into an obsession. He would gather with friends on school playgrounds to listen to Kool FM radio recordings on their walkmens, until he could no longer confine his passion to break times and would skip lessons to shop for vinyl at Black Market Records in Soho.

Looking for an outlet to publicly air the wax he was buying by the shedload, he came into contact with one of the founders of the Time FM pirate radio station and pestered him with phone calls for a month until he was offered a show. It was hardly a prime slot – the 6-8am Saturday graveyard shift – but he accepted with enthusiasm and set his alarm early every weekend for months to broadcast his sets.

His next pirate stint was on Origin FM, which he held down for four years and in that time began to release music under the name Dangerous, with records arriving through outlets such as Mickey Finns’ Urban Takeover label and his own Xplicit Sound. But while studying Music Technology at university he began to fall out of love with the d’n’b scene, finding the move towards jump-up sounds to be at odds with the rawness and darkness of the music he fell in love with.

Musically disillusioned after graduating, he decided to spend the summer in Ibiza and it was there that he was introduced to techno. Dax was blown away by the spectacle of the clubs and the new music he was hearing, describing his response to Stray Landings as “this music is like drum 'n' bass but slower, I love it!” He returned to producing invigorated with a new direction to follow, yet he didn’t completely forego his roots and regularly works old breaks and the classic amen sound into his techno exploits, making for some of the most high-octane records going.

Dax J’s contribution to the genre since has been massive, co-founding the EarToGround label and going solo with his Monnom Black imprint, curating and contributing to a stacked release schedule that never falters in quality. His work ethic is so strong that he even sets up a micro studio on planes on the way to gigs.

2015 saw the release of debut full-length ‘Shade Of Black’ which was awarded Album of the Month in Mixmag and showcased an artist with an assured vision and uncompromising attitude. It’s a mindset that he carries over to his DJ sets that are characterised by rigid rhythms and forays into pulsating acid. Check out his slamming In Session mix below for a prime example.”

Many people claim to have eclectic tastes, but few carry through on their promises as ably as Illum Sphere. The Manchester man is as likely to drop a hip hop joint as he is freak you out with some wave or dub, make you move your ass with some boogie or pummel you into submission with some techno. It is the same story at his night, Hoya:Hoya, which has grown into one of his native city’s most acclaimed parties, with unbeatable residents like Jon K, Krystal Klear and Jonny Dub a key part of that. Given his magpie approach to playing records, it’s no wonder the same goes for Illum Sphere’s style when producing. He has put out his wares on 3024, Fat City, Young Turks and Tectonic, and is now a regular Ninja Tune artist with a brand new album one the way later this year. 

The mix, which is the first after his Fabriclive in November 2014, Illum Sphere serves up is typically atypical. Over the course of eighty minutes he takes you up, down and round and round through a hard to categorise world of sound. Atmosphere and texture are as important as beats and tempos, and it is hard to think of anyone as able to cover as much ground, with as much of a sense of cohesion, as this most fascinating musical man.

In anticipation of Atom™ and Tobias' tour of the US over the next two weekends (July 29 - Stereo Montreal, July 30 - The Bunker New York,  August 5 - Surface Tension SF, and August 6 - Lunar Lodge Colorado), we dug up this set, recorded at The Bunker New York showcase at Anthology at The Works in Detroit on May 25, 2015.  This three hour live and improvised set of hypnotizing mind control music closed out Movement weekend in epic fashion.  The room was still packed when they finished at 6am.

Bassiani Podcast’s 16th episode, recorded at the club’s season closing night, comes from Antonin Jeanson, best known as Antigone, whose entry into the world of electronic music has been highly acclaimed with his debut EP "Forbidden Works" on Construct Re-Form back in 2011, followed by releases such as “The Astral Traveller” and “The Deadly Games Of Gamma”. The next step for the Parisian artist was the well-know Token Records, putting out 2 EPs named ”Cantor Dust" and "Saudade” illustrating hypnotic, melodic and melancholic style of his productions. This very personal touch was what gave him the residency at Concrete and has opened the doors of the worlds most respected clubs.

Antigone who is at the forefront of the French techno scene offers up to 130 minute excursion into the mind-bending textures. He builds things quickly, delving deep into his record collection with dark ambience and energetic mood.

Haruka has been associated with Future Terror for a long time, but in recent years he has stepped out from Nobu’s shadow and firmly established himself as one of Japan’s leading techno DJs. A clever DJ with a strong sense for the dynamics of the dancefloor, Haruka is adept at locking into a groove and keeping the energy going. This is reflected in his mix, which is a strong demonstration of the kind of deeper take on techno that Japanese crowds gravitate towards. In recent years Haruka has established himself at the forefront of Japan’s next generation of techno DJs. Since moving to Tokyo at the age of 26, he has honed his skills as a DJ through becoming a resident DJ and co-organizer of DJ Nobu’s infamous Future Terror parties. He has played throughout Japan, including appearances at most of the major clubs in Tokyo – such as Unit, Contact, Dommune  – as well as at the Fuji Rock and Rural festivals. Haruka has distinguished himself through his versatility as a DJ, with the ability to play carefully crafted opening sets, driving and powerful techno in peaktime slots, as well as afterhours sessions or more experimental explorations. These skills have also been displayed on mixes for the Juno Plus and Clubberia podcast series. In addition to his DJing, Haruka is half of Twin Peaks, an improvisational live act he does with DJ Yazi. Haruka commenced 2016 by playing an extended closing set at Future Terror's New Year's Eve party, an important moment in defining his musical trajectory for the year to come.

So here we are. When Guy asked me to do a little something something for the 20 Years Bunker Records party in a few weeks I thought, oh well, why not. "Doesn't have to be much, like 45 minutes?" he said. But then when I sat down to actually do it, blanks were drawn fast. Where the hell to begin? There's so much music, and being so close to it over the years all of it has some kinda misplaced significance and meaning. Damn son, this thing got me all ponderous. About my own game, about Bunker, the directions it took over the years and the importance it had in my life and that of a LOT of people around me. I am not even talking about music, but for some Bunker Records literally stood between drop-out-ville gun-in-mouth killing spree blues and the dance floor factory. The number of artists that got their start on Bunker Records and the number of quasi careers it launched is ridiculous. I can go full disclosure and admit that me and mines travelled the world at least half a dozen times on the back of it.

In many ways Bunker is an affirmation of the nerd life, a self contained (and carefuly cultivated) end game of it's serial monomaniac owner and creator Guy Tavares, who is, by his own admission, stuck forever alone at a high-school dance. Sprung from an environment that has largely been gentrified (The Hague) and a scene that is close to being wiped out (squatters dude!). Stark and slightly pompous in its vision, but never rigid and -godforbid- petty minded. It is also inclusive, welcomes the input of others and is quick to support upcoming artists. It doesn't really matter who you are or what you credentials are, if you've got a story to tell, you can roll no problem, the music always comes first. And yes dammit, sometimes this platitude really is what it is! It makes Bunker Records one of the very few true DIY labels and absolutely unique in today's music landscape: a Bullshit Detector for the noughties, a tiny giant hammering at the foundations of dance music's Ego Cathedrals. Alas, since none of *important* media seem to notice this birthday (yet), it feels a bit like a man toasting himself in the mirror of a Travel Inn single bedroom with sum minibar party favors listening to Orca Reunion. But hey, Dirty Brown fo' life!*

Back to this mix then, still wtf... I guess it's made up of some classics, some personal faves and some tracks I rediscovered while trying to figure out what to put in it. I tried to stay a bit broad and not too much stuck in one sound or period or artist AND not make it too messy. It turned into some GETO shit, RUFF around the edges, far from perfect, but it's got some confidence and personality: exactly how it should be with a thing like this. We're on some The Hague shit after all, not 4 decks minimal loops on your Traktor. And yeah your favorite track isn't in there but erm, don't take it personal, you're encouraged to make your own mix.
