Theory Therapy 51 is by producer and field recordist Jake Muir.

Jake is someone we’ve been eager to have on the series for a very long time. The Berlin-based artist has such a fantastic ability to create a specific sense of space and atmosphere in his music and mixes. This recording is no exception. It's an updated version of a set originally made for the Cool Room party in Melbourne, filled with yawning spaces of natural reverb and densely textured ambient. “The way the chillout room was described to me sounded very low key, with people drawing and what not, so I kept that vibe in mind when selecting tracks. The music spans from the late 70s through now.”

Martyn is the finest example of an artist who exists outside traditional genre boundaries. Ever since the mid-90s, the Dutchman has operated in his own adjacent worlds while drawing on UK bass hybrids, techno and electro to cook up singular rhythms and unique moods. The 3024 label head has always used his platform to bring through new talent, and now also mentors young artists with his own Patreon program. This sits next to his ever spell-binding performances in the club and eye-opening monthly Darkest Light show on NTS, which is a deep dive into his love of jazz. 

This week's mix is a 70-plus minute snapshot of Martyn's sound, which is as timeless as ever. From the crispness of Detroit electro to the off-beat thump of bass via his deep techno lit up with glistening electronics, it is a perfect blend of body and head and one full of brazen moves. There's a switch to jazz-laced broken beat and low, then the slow wobble of dubstep before a rebuild towards old school jungle that proves this is the sound of a true master at work.

Back in the day, drums were used as signals for festivities and war because their sounds travelled the furthest. Azu Tiwaline has long understood that. A master in the dark arts of percussion, she makes deep and profound percussive music that seems to communicate forgotten rituals from centuries past. Her sound is dense, as if pulled from the depths of the Sahara desert in Tunisia, yet still feels spacious thanks to polyrhythmic contortions and sparse, elegant melodies.

Her productions largely fall into the confines of percussive techno, but unlike the genre's springier variants, her dubby textures and psychedelic rhythms command seriousness and move with immensity. Her Livity Sound debut, the Magnetic Service EP from 2020, connected Amazigh music with dub and techno and is a masterclass in restraint and hypnosis. Her latest release, The Fifth Dream, continues to showcase her skills in balancing light and dark tones using field recordings from her home in Tunisia's El Djerid desert, minimal ambient techno and haunting notes.

Mirroring her discography, this RA Podcast features plenty of twisted rhythms, trippy techno and straightforward club cuts. Created for movement rather than hypnosis, these selections show off a different side of her drum palette—perky breaks and syncopated kicks—wrapped in her usual weighty atmospheres.

This mix bears nearly three hours of winding explorations as James DJed for a lounge of interlocking bodies: 
–drifters in obscure motion and silent during a non-verbal hour.

There were paper and pens, so people wrote and drew to each other instead of talking. They would also mime, or speak with the body.

For December's event at Limehouse Town Hall, James will bring a fascinating set of ambients for dream or dance.

Phylr is Jim Filer Coleman. Creatively diverse and/or schizophrenic, the music ranges from machine oriented beat driven mayhem to organic atmospheric ambience, usually settling in the realm of cinematic imagination. 

Historically, Coleman was an integral member of seminal post punk, post industrial band Cop Shoot Cop. He then went on to compose music for indie films and television. He has worked with directors such as Hal Hartley, Todd Phillips, Beth B, and Richard Kern. Coleman has also composed music for series and one - offs for HBO, A&E, Court TV and TLC, among others.

Coleman has released 2 albums under the name Phylr and done numerous remixes (Foetus, Young Gods, Steve Wynn etc). He has collaborated with noted Italian composer Teho Teardo as Here, and with sonic mastermind JG Thirlwell as Baby Zizanie.

He has an on again - off again band in NYC called The Children.

An ambient album entitled Trees will be released under the name Jim Coleman in 2012.
