I love watching PIANO WIRE play. It’s exciting to witness the same kind of guitar tension that powered Boston’s Pixies/Breeders axis, cuffed against the wall with Magazine’s straitjacketed postpunk pop.

Guitars growl from under the floorboards, melodies tighten around your heart. Harmonies and battering rams, guitar strings and piano wire.

Piano Wire are the new band from Sym and Andy, still smouldering from the wreckage of Eighties Matchbox B Line Disaster’s final uncontrolled detonation. Sean and Tim fill out the four here and balance the scales.

Their debut record, The Genius Of The Crowd, a “lurid post-punk gem”, packs in 8 great songs in 24 minutes, thrilling and shaking from the off with the “delicious pop-tinged rock-threat” of I’ll Kill You’s 136 seconds of breathless escape.

It balances the shaking and helpless Are You The Vaccine? and Into The Orchid “conjuring up a veritable shitstorm”; with the Lemonheads/Elliot Smith melodic wordplay of Blue Canyon Eyes‘ beautifully scarred vistas and the dizzy swaggering of Fossils and Superstar.

Sym and Andy came back from the funeral of their old band 80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster with an idea. They set out to make a massive, chaotic and psychedelic punk rock record.  It is done.  

‘Dream Underground’ was recorded over 8 long, intense nights last autumn and pulls together everything that makes the band so special into one beautiful whirlwind.  The ADD song-structures, fizzing angry guitars, their knack with a massive hook and all set to Sym’s lyrics born of heavy experience, weighed against the equally heavy doses of perspective that kept him and Andy alive. Sean and Tim amp up both the beckoning hooks and threatening chaos perfectly.

‘Dream Underground’ is OUT NOW via the band’s own Hanging Houses label.

Live dates include a stretch with Steve Gullick’s legendary Tenebrous Liar and new punk rock heroes Horseflies.
