MELOMANIAC

Composed in 2017.

Remastered in April 2025.

The people I follow know that sooner or later I'll visit their SC page to listen to their compositions. It's a ritual I do 4-5 times a year. And when I say listen... I mean really listen.

I do it because I like certain styles. Other times it's the technique. Other times it's the composition. Other times... simply to learn.
The truth is that music, as an element of communication, tells me a lot about the creator's intention, how it interprets certain themes, and even conveys a certain profile of the composer himself.

It's hard to explain, but it's as I say.

This composition is introspective and brings together some of my favorite styles, such as melodic, rock, and electronic.

I named it this because it corresponds to a period when my listening became more pronounced and I didn't have anyone to listen to me at the time.

It's certainly a strange composition, especially because of certain percussion sections (understood as self-criticism).

I will be grateful for your comments, as always.

There's no such thing as defeat unless you retreat.

Did three live runs playing along to the previous recording each time. It's a good reason to hold onto an older phone or have that handy no effort live mic/memory /speaker device.. Having two you can handily setup live mic and playback and you can record an idea anywhere and build pretty cool live mic sessions fairly fast and while the idea is most fresh in your head... the moment you make it. A good exercise for playing to your instinct

etc etc... an effortless daw like / live sounding result to bring to your actual daw and deliver it there with arguably a lot less thought and effort

The original recording process is also less screen distraction. On your DAW its harder to avoid screen. You can turn the phones over and leave them play / record and its square lights out. In my opinion this is important as screens are our trigger for the monotony of the matrix that is the internet.  Me included most of us have used it as this super handy tool and ignored the subliminal information we get fed all the time... So even if we are not being live fed it during the creative process I believe there could still be detrimental triggers involved which may hinder your creative side. I need to research this more but its basically how our brain and it's subconscious is triggered by norms (doing monotonous things on streaming sites) So i suggest we should be endeavouring to create an environment that flicks the correct switches... our creative ones and for many of us... screens don't do that regularly enough to be an inspiration and maybe they are not our best creative trigger. I guess thats another reason a pen/pencil is good to use... Maybe that helps trigger yourself from using it in school... always an ultra creative time in most lucky peoples lives

Wise Yet Harmless

He stands in twilight
at the gates of the new city's walls.
A strange dawn stirs on the blade of the meridian.
The last city smolders in the distance. 
His footprints in their soft dust craters
trail behind him 
and alongside are the drops of blood
that let astride him.
He hears the distant hounds.
A breeze lifts and covers his tracks

but through the gate
he peers, for now.
The city begins to awaken and come to life.
The bakers, the artists, the carpenters
and the elite, merge into one citizen
smiling on their paths.
He looks upon the road
leading to the private houses
and figures silhouetted above the sills.
Laughter from within their walls. 

The sunrise catches the apex
of a pearled pagan statue, where paths converge
and his eyes divert upon it. 
He stands until the sunlight reaches her eyes of the East.

Hecate waits, standing in stone, without faltering
in three-form. One face by light.
Two others by shadow. In each hand a torch
and the others hold a serpent, a key.
He is entranced by a momentary paralysis

and he imagines the future, unraveling to the North
past the mountains, overlooking the new city.
Her reflection in his dark eyes reverberates between them infinitely.
Sage burns. A hex lifts. The ghosts like petals drift.
The gravity of the morning moon, still in the sky, lifts the dew.
The blades of grass bend toward the celestial.
He begins to cry, and his eyes are then clear.

Two guards near, and begin to call out.
He returns down the path and takes a new fork
up into the overgrowth and throngs of thorns.
Up the mountain, he wades, unflinching and finds a clearing.

He sets up a camp between the cities.
Overlooking the distant landscapes
the smoldering old, and the glow of the new.
He speaks to the night phantoms, and coyotes
who dare not near
and the black fountain to him, speaks of method and form 
like wine. A moth flutters into the light and heat
to invoke a change. 
Geese pass overhead, a transition
at the threshold of season.
He watches the fire, the night long, and the hounds bay.

He douses the embers, for the ashes to fractal
meet root, and rise again.
Broken and delirious, he sees a vision
of the frog at the well
at the edge of the underworld, aflame.
It clings in silence, to the scales unfair.
Tempting darkness to near. 
He reaches out, with hand weak
and it dives, escaping wet into the cosmos below.

Sending ripples through the stars.
He looks down at his reflection until the water stills
and in that moment, his mirror splits to twin.
He looks up, but no one is yet there beside him.
A premonition. A last black hope.
The mountain grows cold.
He cries out as he awakens.

I. Venus in Pisces

Dusted off the trusty old Volca Drum machine to create the beat for this one. In years past I used it quite a lot, including on many of the early Smoking Trout tracks, but it had been a little while. I'm also continuing to experiment with longer stretches of guitar, and incorporated most of the synth arsenal on this one. This was kind of inspired by reading the news here in the US, a strange mixture of depressing and ridiculous weirdness haha.
