For a classical choral play that I wrote, but unused for a documentary film, I used a technique that I never experienced before, writing for each word a note, in other words: I wrote by hand note by note for each of the sentences, verses, etc. The composition of Missing Pieces was the first time I applied this technique for a pop song. It was almost like doing mathematics and solving an emotional equation for each sentence.

So it’s a special song, from the view as a composer maybe. Before Missing Pieces, I used chords or played melodies that then would inspire me to do something over that. Instead, there were my words that constructed the song.

I recorded myself with my phone playing the song structure to have the song stuck in my head and share my idea with the music producer I worked with. I do love to write music! I used to play this recording at maximum volume over and over to imagine myself living the song. If you would see me, you would have seen a crazy man dancing to a constant piano melody. But in my mind, I was trying to figure how the music production should be. It was fun.

But why the lyrics? The whole idea was to be fragile. One of my closest friends was having a hard relationship with her boyfriend. And I was confused in emotions as my grandmother was dying of cancer. So this was enough for me to try to express my feelings from two points of view. For songs, lyrics can have different meanings. What I wanted to say is that we all suffer, and to put an end, we must pick up and find pieces of ourselves that are spread in our past, present and future. That was the original intention of this composition, February 2019. We began to produce the song in September that year, and finished the idea of production in 2020.

What I liked the most of this recording was the strength that shifts through the melody that the piano delivers. I really love the sound it has. I feel blessed just to be able to sit and play it. This piano was crafted months before the Second World War began, and a family brought it to Chile from Germany. Another crazy fact, it survived with no physical injuries the 2010 Chile earthquake at this same place were I recorded this. The recording is not clear of noise pollution, but as an experiment, it’s perfect, as it’s the place where I composed this song.
