Live from The Pickle Factory

The latest mix in our OSM series comes from Brooklyn’s GE-OLOGY, who will be releasing an anticipated LP on Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature label later this year. Over the course of his career he's worked with artists such as Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Jill Scott, De La Soul, Yukimi Nagano (Little Dragon), Jem, the Basement Boys and the list goes on. Well known for rocking dance floors from Europe to Asia and beyond, he digs deep in his heavy vinyl collection, weaving diverse music genres that coalesce to inspire soulful movement on the dance floor.

GE-OLOGY plays our OSM MCDE Recordings night this Friday along with Motor City Drum Ensemble, Mike Huckaby & Pablo Valentino. This event has sold out.

OSM002 - GE-OLOGY

The next mix in our OSM mix series comes from adroit all-rounder and DJ mastermind Ata. Ata has carved a path as a visionary in the European club scene, owning three labels and running the legendary Robert Johnson club in Frankfurt alongside Sebastian Kahrs. With an encyclopaedic knowledge of music, expect to be transported through the halcyon days of classic house, disco, funk and techno.

OSM005 - Ata

The next mix in our OSM series comes from German DJ, producer, label manager and ‘DJ’s DJ’, Ian Pooley. With a career spanning nearly 25 years, Pooley continues to bridge the gap between house and techno, contributing to some of the electronic scene’s biggest labels including Innervisions, Ovum as well as his own labels pooledmusic and Montage.

OSM006 - Ian Pooley

Our latest mix comes from Oskar Offermann, the man behind Berlin’s WHITE Records and edit-oriented Rimini imprint. The sample-heavy and crisp, percussive nature of his work is no doubt indebted to his roots in hip hop production and MC-ing as a youth in Frankfurt, but Offermann has not limited himself to the studio chair. In addition to regular stints behind the decks, he manages a hefty workload through the running of his two labels which favor the familiarity and timelessness offered by vinyl output.

OSM007 - Oskar Offermann

Kai Alce plays in The Pickle Factory on 4th December along with Aspect Music boss Thomas Melchior and Phonica's Jonny White.

Until recently a vastly underrated figure in Chicago's music scene, Kai Alcé has over the past few years gained the recognition he’s long deserved. His label, NDATL Muzik, has played a vital role in pushing new strains of soulful house since its inception in 2008, while Alcé’s own productions have featured on heavyweight US labels like Mahogani Music and FXHE.

On 11th March, Cosmin TRG debuted his brand of dark, murky electronics at The Pickle Factory.

It’s not for nothing that Cosmin TRG has been touted ‘dance music’s most ubiquitous figure’. The Bucharest native is one of the most prolific producers and DJs of the past decade. His enviable release catalogue includes EPs for 50 Weapons, Hessle Audio and Bpitch Control, while his DJ career has seen headline gigs at Berghain, Trouw and Sonar. 

And yet in spite of his success, Cosmin remains a uniquely uncompromising artist, whose music takes as many cues from abstract 90s electronics and minimal Italian film scores as more prosaic 4/4 rhythms.

OSM 014 comes from Fred P, in honour of his new quarterly residency at The Pickle Factory and Oval Space.

Fred P is one of the most enduring figures on the contemporary house and techno scene. From 2017, he will play four dates a year across both of our venues. It's hard to imagine a more worthy resident. A deeply talented producer, forward thinking label owner, and simply sublime DJ, Fred P has quickly become one of New York’s eminent dance music exports during his near-ten year career. Growing up to a musical family in Brooklyn during the 1980s, Peterkin was exposed to the disco, funk and hip hop that he now effortlessly rolls into his introspective house productions. The Soul People Music boss has also released records for New York contemporaries Underground Quality and The Corner, and a recent well-received LP on Mule Musiq. 

It is behind a pair of turntables, however, that Fred P truly shows his mastery. The New Yorker could claim to be one of the most respected DJs in the dance music world, a deeper than deep digger who specialises in warm, emotive house and thumping US techno. No one sums up the ethos of The Pickle Factory quite like Fred - in his passion, his assiduous approach to production design, and his warm, understated presence. It is a distinct pleasure to announce his new quarterly residency, and we expect Fred will have something special in store to mark the occasion on 8th July.

OSM 015 comes from Going Good founder and revered London-based digger and DJ Brian Not Brian.

Few London DJs have a record collection as deep, broad and compelling as Brian Not Brian. The Going Good boss and frequent Sex Tags affiliate is most comfortable playing exultant disco cuts, but he's equally capable of spinning rich house records, rare soul and oddball techno. 

OSM 015 finds Brian in a darker mood. The Going Good boss rifles through ambient soundscapes, Detroit techno and banging electro. Tracklist nerds delight - there's a plethora of vinyl obscurities here to uncover.

On August 19th, he joins Hoya:Hoya resident Jon K, and World Unknown / Bodyhammer boss Joe Hart at The Pickle Factory. Three of the UK's finest DJs on Pickle's special soundsystem - an unmissable party.

OSM 015 | Brian Not Brian

OSM 016 is a live recording of an artist that's truly special to us - Melliflow co-founder Vera.

No one plays house and techno quite like Vera: elegant, technically flawless, with every one of her records deployed just at the right time and place. In Vera's hands, you might hear shuffling minimal mixed into acid house, or electro into dub techno, but always bridged by subtle, speedy transitions that never sound rushed or disjointed. Quite simply, she's one of the best DJs in the business.

Recorded live at one of her and Alexandra's Melliflow showcases at Club Der Visionaere, OSM 016 finds Vera in a housey mood. 80 mins+ of sublime 4/4 music new and old, it's one of our favourite podcasts we've released to date.

On 28th October, The Pickle Factory hosted a special extended set from Jane Fitz and Jade Seatle's Night Moves alias, whose eponymous nomadic London party Night Moves has long been close to our hearts. 

Their superb 4 hour+ session is the first in our new OSM Live series - a fitting way to begin.

OSM Live 003 - Bruce

Oval Space's 18th podcast comes from Alex Picone, co-founder of superb house label Seekers, and key resident of the label's nomadic party offshoot. On 24th February, Seekers comes to The Pickle Factory for a debut UK showcase, with Laurine, Gwenan and Niff joining Alex on the decks.

Beautifully compiled; mixed flawlessly, his mix for us is the perfect teaser for a special night of electronic music in all rhythms and textures on 24th February.

OSM 018 - Alex Picone

On 23rd April, The Pickle Factory invites revered Australian artist Andras Fox to play an intimate Sunday show, supported by Truly Madly, one of our favourite London DJs and a record geek without equal.

Truly's debut in The Pickle Factory, an extended warmup for Convextion back in February, has lived long in our memory - perhaps the finest warmup set to grace Pickle since opening. His mix for us is just as good - full of loose, fuzzy, broken beat jams in all styles, rhythms and textures.

OSM 021 - Truly Madly

OSM 022 comes from Soul:Ution resident and nu-skool DnB favourite LSB. Dark, atmospheric, bass-heavy; it's a beautifully compiled journey through cutting edge DnB rhythms and soulful musicality.

On Sunday 30th April and Bank Holiday Sunday 28th May, LSB will be joining Marcus Intalex's Soul:Ution crew for two more instalments of forward-thinking broken beats at The Pickle Factory.

Japanese maestro, Future Terror founder and Oval Space's exclusive resident DJ Nobu provides the 23rd edition of OSM's podcast series - and it's one of our favourites to date.

DJ Nobu is one of the finest DJs Japan has ever fostered and produced. In his home country, he is best known for his fabled Future Terror parties, an event he’s run out of his hometown Chiba for over ten years. But it is as a DJ and record collector that Nobu is truly special. While most DJs lean on old favourites and the tried and trusted, Nobu’s selections speak to the wealth of music that remain undiscovered, and inspire us to keep digging deeper. 

Nobu's mix for us ventures into the weird, esoteric end of his musical spectrum - a deep dive through techno in all rhythms & textures. We are honoured to work with DJ Nobu as one of Oval Space's residents, and this mix offers further proof of why the Japanese DJ is right at the top of his game right now.

OSM Live 005 is a live recording from The Pickle Factory, recorded by a London DJ who’s close to our hearts - Bradley Zero.

Rhythm Section founder, NTS Radio host and Peckham-based tastemaker extraordinaire Bradley Zero is a UK digger and DJ almost without equal. His Rhythm Section has fast become one of London’s finest soirées, before expanding into a label in 2014, putting out modern classic EPs from the Oval Space favourites such as Al Dobson Jr, Henry Wu and Chaos In The CBD.

Bradley Zero's OSM Live 005 is snipped from a special Friday night at The Pickle Factory last March. Bradley, fellow talented Londoner Dan Shake, and our own Jett tore the wooden-beamed roof off Pickle all night long. As can be heard above, Bradley was on flying form, mixing house, disco, and everything else fast and furiously. Play it loud.

OSM Live 005 - Bradley Zero

This Friday, The Pickle Factory hosts Jane Fitz's final resident party of the year, with a truly special lineup in tow. Jade Seatle, co-founder of Night Moves and a DJ & digger without equal, returns to Pickle for only her third gig of 2017.

Jade is a DJ we have long admired, so ahead of the gig, we asked her for a mix. What she sent us is one of our favourite podcasts to date. Deep, beautiful house and techno records, many of which Seatle acquired during a road trip to Movement Festival five years ago. 

In Jade's own words: "I recorded it in 2012, shortly after Jane and I returned from our road trip to the US for the Movement Festival in Detroit. I was feeling energised by my experience there and inspired by the people I'd met and the music I'd bought and been given from people like Patrice Scott, Hakim Murphy, Amir Alexander, some of those records have been featured in this mix."

Get Pickled, our annual NYE afterparty, returns on 1st January with a Very Special Guest, Scott Fraser, Gwenan, Joe Delon, and Spaced's Tho and Ricky Courtman guiding us through the wee hours until 2pm.

Ahead of NYD morning, Tho aka Tom Burnell sent us a 55min party-starter of a mix, that's got us in the mood for some afterparty fun. Tom's party Spaced is a London-based soirée we care deeply about: last NYD we joined with them for a Get Pickled, and it only felt right to ring in 2018 with the crew once more.

OSM 027 - Tho

Bailey and Need for Mirrors return to The Pickle Factory on 8th March to celebrate the fourth anniversary of their legendary Soul In Motion parties. Channeling the energy of classic DnB midweek parties such as Metalheadz at Blue Note and Fabio’s Swerve at Velvet Rooms, these gatherings place music and community at their centre, joined by a handpicked selection of very special guests. The duo sent us over a solid hour of deep listening for our podcast series ahead of their celebrations on Thursday.

                              

OSM 028 - Soul in Motion

Back in early February we hosted one of our favourite parties in recent memory, a Detroit Electro Special featuring the likes of DJ Bone, Radioactive Man and Dopplereffekt. None other than Craig Richards was the nights special guest, who blew us away with typically seamless mixing and incredible selections from a lesser known corner of his lauded collection.

Pickle Factory 2017-10-13

OSM Live 008 - Alex Downey

CoOp was a London party institution throughout the 2000s. Born in London’s Velvet Room’s and gaining notoriety in the city’s legendary (late) club Plastic People, disciples of the party praise the dancers, the beats and the much fabled dance circles.

Born from this legacy is CoOp Presents, a new label that includes next generation bruk collective, Selectors Assemble, featuring OGs and newcomers alike. The collective consists of an ever-evolving string of producers, MCs and DJs, whose recent releases, compilations and parties in spots such as Amsterdam and London have recaptured that original family energy that was synonymous with those seminal CoOp nights.

On Saturday 29th September 2018, Selectors Assemble host a party at The Pickle Factory. Ahead of this, we present a mix from collective member Oliver Night, exploring the forward facing element of the broken beat sound. With one foot firmly in London’s musical heritage with sounds of grime, dubstep and garage, and the other exploring fresh and eclectic bass heavy percussive rhythms, this is the sound of CoOp Presents: Selectors Assemble.

OSM 029 – Oliver Night (CoOp)

TPF is a new mix series exploring the electronic sound of our cult club space, The Pickle Factory.

We begin the series with a live mix from Joe Delon, recorded at The Pickle Factory on 12th October. This was one of our favourite parties of 2018, with four of the closest members of the Pickle family - Joe Delon, Jade Seatle, and our residents Gwenan & Jane Fitz - sharing the same bill for the very first time.

We’ve been big fans of Joe for a while, but even still, he totally blew us away that night. We couldn’t think of a more perfect way to begin our new mix series. Supporting special local talent, playing records, and doing it the right way. Tuck in.

TPF–001: Joe Delon

TPF–002 comes from the first lady of The Pickle Factory, Jane Fitz. Jane has been pivotal in the evolution of Pickle. Her passion, integrity and deep knowledge of dance music informs everything we stand for, and we’re proud to continue her residency into a third year in 2019.

Fitzy’s mix is a live recording from our 3rd birthday in November, a remarkable night of music, and a very special party for all of us at Pickle. Jane closed the party 5am-8am, coming on as a secret guest after Donato Dozzy. As Jane said to us at the time, this was to be a unique peek at some of her most precious records. In her own words, the sort of tunes “that barely leave the house, they’re so special to me.”

As a document of the final hours of the best party we’ve ever thrown, this mix is priceless - there have been a few misty eyes in the office listening back. But more importantly, this is Jane at her very best - the UK’s finest DJ, showcasing a life’s work of collecting records. A mind-bending excursion through a kaleidoscope of deep, trippy, ravey sonic textures. A quite miraculous mix, that we’ve come back to time and again over the last few months. Now you can, too.

TPF–002: Jane Fitz

On 1 March 2019, The Pickle Factory hosted the launch party of electro label EON Records, brain child of label founder Adam Shelton. The new label is the result of an exploration of deeper sounds over the last two years, seeing Shelton perform under a new guise, A-Future. The launch shaped a strong night of music: null + void’s Kirsti, Reedale Rise, Censor Record’s Alex Jann, and Cultivated Electronics head Sync 24 showcased all realms of electro.

This instalment of the TPF mix series is Shelton's A-Future alias delivering one-hour-and-thirty of unapologetic and thunderous electro. A pivotal move for his own sound, this mix documents Shelton's journey into a more left field aesthetic. A banging set of spaced out, psychedelic energies anchored by searing acid basslines, and an undeniable groove. Enjoy.

TPF–004 is a special recording for us, not least because it comes in part from The Pickle Factory's newest resident, Leif.

The mix is a live recording from Leif's first residency party back in March. To mark the occasion, he invited a debut live set from Forest Drive West, a warmup from ace French selector Gigsta, and as the grand finale, a closing b2b with Leif joined by Livity Sound boss and fellow genre-bending UK selector, Peverelist.

Leif and Peverelist going toe to toe at peak time is exactly what The Pickle Factory was made for. Two of the UK's finest selectors, sharing the decks for the first time. A rabbit hole of a mix, they traverse through hypnotic techno and spaced out house, before finally settling on thunderous 180bpm rhythms. Or as Leif himself described it, "Jungle rinse out hour". TPF–004: Leif B2B Peverelist

TPF-005 is a live recording of two friends and artists we care deeply about: Gwenan and Andrew James Gustav.

Back in May, we hosted a Closer showcase, inviting two of the cult Kyiv clubs’ residents to join our own Gwenan and Andrew. It was one of the most memorable nights we’ve had at Pickle: a showcase of our favourite club in the world in our 250cap space; a chance to host two lovely Ukrainians who had never been to the UK before; and a crowd of friends and regulars, that made Pickle feel like a big house party - close and intimate, just how it should be.

Most of all, it marked the return of Andrew & Gwenan, playing records together for the first time in three years. As their closing set began, a unique vibe took hold: a jolt of nostalgia for nights previous - not least Hifi, Andrew & Gwenan’s party that took place 5mins walk from Pickle- combined with the pure joy of seeing two friends vibing off each other again, and increasingly, a reaffirmation that wow, these two are seriously good playing together, bringing the best out of each other in a way few b2b pairings can. By the time Andrew spun the last record at 6:05am, the dancefloor had fallen into a woozy, happy - and not a little emotional - trance.

TPF-005 is the final 2 hours or so of that closing set, but it stands for so much more. We still get shivers down our spine at 1:35:35, remembering being on the dancefloor, and how it made us feel. Music is such a lovely thing, because it brings people closer together- and this was one of those transcendent nights at Pickle that made us feel warm & fuzzy all the taxi ride home. Enjoy x

TPF–005: Gwenan & Andrew James Gustav

TPF-006 was recorded at The Pickle Factory on 20th April 2019, with 3x Technic Mk5g turntables and an E&S mixer, selected and mixed by the maestro, Donato Dozzy.

Back in November 2018, we pulled off a once in a lifetime lineup: bringing Donato Dozzy to our 200cap venue for Pickle’s 3rd Birthday, inviting him and our resident Jane Fitz to spin until 8am. We thought lightning could never strike twice, until it did: Dozzy returned in April to play a marathon ‘No Boundaries’ set, opening the night at 10pm with a spellbinding 4 hours of dextrous, richly textured downtempo music.

This recording, snipped by Donato to a lean, perfectly paced 90 minutes, shows why he’s regarded as our greatest living techno DJ. His mixing is one thing - seamlessly layering tracks, often spinning three records at once - but its Dozzy’s total control of flow and momentum that sets him apart. Though the BPM doesn’t budge from the low 100s, the build of intensity through the mix is palpable. At Pickle that night, people were losing their shit, pre-12am, to music at a hip hop speed.

It is the work of a true master of his craft. An artist we are lucky to have in our world, and one we’re honoured to have hosted at Pickle twice in the past 12 months. Thank you, Donato.

TPF–006: Donato Dozzy

Proudly presenting TPF–007 from upsammy, the singular Dutch artist with ears trained on the unknown.  

When we asked rising (and rising) star Peach to curate a night with us on November 1st 2019, she reached out to long-time friend and fellow Torontonian Club Fitness, and De School resident, upsammy. The latter, whose refined taste and genre-elasticity has been quietly garnering her a cult following in recent years, steps up to the plate from TPF–007, a live recording from her three hour warm up set that night. 

The result is one of the most imaginative and masterful early door sets we've had the pleasure to host at Pickle. Departing from the high-octane / tempo sounds upsammy often champions, expect a winding journey through dub, experimental bass, oddball techno and plenty more besides.

TPF–007: upsammy

The eighth edition of our live at The Pickle Factory series is a masterpiece inflow, from slick Parisian house selector Dyed Soundorom.

Recorded during his first-ever All Night set in the UK back in January, the recording sees Dyed expertly build momentum over 3 and a half hours, starting with an empty floor and concluding during peak time. 

Brimming with classy selections, stitched together flawlessly, Dyed’s mix is the work of a deeply talented artist, one at the peak of his powers.

At a time when the Pickle team is deeply missing our dancefloor, this mix has brought us some relief and reminded us of fond memories in the recent past. We hope it does for you too.
