DHM:
Tell us a little about yourself. How did you start your career?

Deep Spelle:
I started to DJ in 2002. Back then i was playing mostly records. Music became stronger in me and i decided to start producing. I then had the chance to sign on few labels runned by artists i liked a lot. The Messenger for example. They signed my first productions back in 2010.

DHM: 
Why did you move from Paris to Montreal?

Deep Spelle:
It was mostly because my father who moved from France to Canada. I decided to follow him when i was 12 years old.

DHM:
Tell us about your nickname, why - Deep Spelle?

Deep Spelle:
Well, Deep House was and still is my favorite style. Spelle is my family name and i wanted to associate it with my artist name. It also has to do something with a « spell ». A deep spell for example. So i picked it up from there.

DHM:
You have a unique ability to make hypnotic music, how do you do it?

Deep Spelle:
It’s a lot of work. When im in the studio i try to be as creative as i can. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. Its a question of feeling. I usually make a lot of song starters/ideas and put it aside. If everything flows nicely, i can finish a track in about 2 weeks. Other times it can be a slow process before i get what i want. I also try to follow my inspiration which means doing what i have in my head at the moment im thinking of it. It can be an idea or just a single sound or pattern.

DHM:
What brings music to your life?

Deep Spelle:
Music is essential to me in every sense. To me it’s way more than just music. Its a whole philosophy, a way of life.

DHM:
Who among today's DJs and musicians of world renown is the undisputed authority for you?

Deep Spelle:
There are many that i respect for their music. It’s a hard choice to just shoot a name like that. Kevin Yost and Gorge are for sure a reference for me but recently i have been really amazed by - EL Mundo.

DHM:
Your attitude to the format? What do you prefer released - on vinyl, digitally or not important?

Deep Spelle:
Today i cherish the vinyl release. It is the best sound on the market and it has its unique approach to it. I give much more credit to labels that do vinyles. 

DHM:
Can you share some creative plans for 2016?

Deep Spelle:
In 2016 im aiming some labels to sign with so i will be making a lot of music.

DHM:
How do you feel about criticism?

Deep Spelle:
It is important to see what people think of your music. Even if it sometimes can be hard to hear.. My brother « Maske » hears everything i produce way before it gets released and we have a bit of a different taste. So he destroys me sometimes.. But i take it and it ends up been helpful.

DHM:
What do you do in your spare time? Maybe you have a favorite hobby?

Deep Spelle:
When i can’t find my inspiration or finished a long session i love to watch movies or play video games.. It takes me completely out of music making and its good. Otherwise i love to grab my bag full of vinyles and go spin at some friends place.

DHM:
To us, Cyclic Records is a guarantee of quality. What about for You?

Deep Spelle:
I love Cyclic Records.

DHM:
And the last question. In 2016, will you be working more with  Mihai Popoviciu?

Deep Spelle:
Mihai - is a huge part of my inspiration and I had the chance to have him in Montreal recently as we played together for a Cyclic night. We spent a couple hours in the studio and i would say we get along well. It’s a pleasure to work with him and I will probably do more for his label.

3 QUESTIONS to POWEL:

Q: Let´s talk about your mix. Reading the tracklist offers a long journey yet. So how did these tracks find the way to your heart?

A: This mix can obviously only be an overview of the different styles of Electronic Music I liked between, roughly, 1997 and 2007. So between the time Electronic Music first appeared on my radar, until the time I got into producing again. It is probably the weirdest and most eclectic mix I've ever recorded. It represents most of the phases I went through, not chronologically though, that would have made the mixing impossible. It includes my IDM phase represented by “Boards Of Canada”, "Dntel" and “Mouse On Mars”, which hasn't lost any of it's impact on me, even after all those years. I think I've gotten into that, when I discovered “Arte Space Night”, a TV show which was showing random images of space combined with ambient music, a perfect thing to get stoned to. I included also a little bit of Drum'N'Bass, which was actually the music I played during my very first club gig. I think I was about 16 years old at then. There's also some House, including this track “I'm lonely” by “Hollis P. Monroe”, which I only had on a  mixtape at the time and never really found out what that track was. Until it popped up somehow a couple of years ago when I was browsing through youtube, and I was like: "Hey that's the track you used to love as a kid." That was quite a moment for me. That track “Resurrection” by “The Amalgamation Of Soundz”, is one of the first records I bought, right after I bought my first decks in 1999, so this will always have special place in my heart, it's a very versatile record, which somehow manages to cover so many different styles within just 4 tracks. I also included some minimal or minimal-ish sounding tracks in the podcast, which was quite revolutionary at the time I discovered this, at least for me. Q: You´re playing your music all over the planet. Do you have a favorite spot and would you prefer playing more local instead of endless travels every weekend?

A: For me, one of the most amazing part of traveling as a DJ is to get around, meet new people and developing friendships all over the world. I would say that this is sometimes even better then the actual DJing part. Sure, on the other hand you have to spend a lot of time at airports and they are the combined horror of overcrowded train stations, shopping malls and border crossings, but you get rewarded by playing music you like at some of the most interesting places in the world, so who wouldn't like that. I also like playing at home, but I'm trying to keep it low, just to make it more special for me.

Q: There´s a new Powel release out on Do Not Sit On The Furniture Recordings. Which other exciting projects are on the way?

A: I just finished my second EP for “All Day I Dream” on which I was working on for quite a while now. I think I’ve been pushing the release date for almost a year and half now, because it never felt a 100% ready to me, but it does now finally. So there's that. I'm also about to finish my first full length album, which I want to release sometime next year. So that's what’s kept and is still keeping me quite busy in the studio.

Barcelona, Spain

Boasting more than a decade of experience releasing music, Pablo Bolívar is a name familiar to most in the underground circuit of Dance music. Born in Santander, Spain, in 1981, he took his first steps into the music business by studying Sound Engineering at Barcelona’s Crash institute, then working as an engineer for a number of years following his graduation in 1998.

After a while, Pablo began working at one of Spain’s most recognised Electronic imprints, Decoder Muzique. Following this, in 2006 he released his debut LP via Barcelona label Regular, entitled ‘Anjanas’. The 11-track album showcased his melodic, hypnotic and intriguing style of Techno that has over the years become synonymous with his name, panning between ambient sections and tougher, more club-driven moments with a real maturity and understanding of music that only comes from studying the art at its core.

In 2009, Pablo released his critically acclaimed and personal favourite LP, ‘Recall’, also via Regular. The album saw him once again nod to past influences such as Heiko Laux and his Kanzleramt label as well as other German imprints such as Chain Reaction, but also was deeply inspired by the passing of his father.

Since then, the Spaniard has gone from strength to strength, with further releases on Regular, as well as on Curle Recordings, Galaktika Records, Desolat, Justified Cause as well as via his own labels, Seven Villas and Avantroots, also remixing the likes of Gui Boratto, Mario Basanov, When Saints Go Machine, Gorge, Parov Stelar or Juana Molina to name a few.

As well as a number of excellent studio releases, Pablo has utilised his background as a sound engineer to help produce for a number of other musicians, including for Hirotaka Miyamoto’s LP ‘Circles’ and Maurice Aymard’s album ‘Between the Stars’. Furthermore, Pablo has continued to manage and release other artist’s music on his labels Avantroots (established 2009 and co-managed by Sergio Sanz) and Seven Villas (established 2014).

Outside of music production, the gifted Spaniard has built up a reputation for his meticulously crafted DJ performances, combining his own mesmerising Techno cuts with records unearthed from his regular excursions crate digging as well as from other artists such as Move D, Soulphiction, I:Cube and Vakula – modern names that he is a big personal fan of.

Looking ahead and Pablo shows little signs of slowly down his ambitious workload, with planned releases on labels such as Endless, Culprit, Moodmusic and Peppermint Jam as well as many other projects in the pipeline. He’ll also continue running his two labels, as well as touring internationally. Keep an eye out for more output from one of Spain’s most exciting talents.
