When It All Goes Away

Indie-folk rockers and staples of the Australian music scene Pierce Brothers have teamed up with platinum award-winning, producer, engineer, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tash Sultana to write and record their new single High and Unsteady, an energetic folk track that permeates waves of clean electric guitar tones alongside the upbeat tempo we’ve come to expect from a PBs tune. Accompanying the new single is an equally impressive animated music video joining 35mm analogue and digital footage, directed and edited by Patrick Pierce himself.

A bouncing summer single, High and Unsteady’s upbeat tempo is underscored by a much darker tone that explores the nature of the emotional pain associated with addiction and its strain on a relationship. Recorded and produced at Tash Sultana’s Melbourne studio, High and Unsteady possesses both the energetic charm of a Pierce Brothers’ single, with the unmistakable rhythm that accompanies Sultana’s electric guitar riffs. “I really enjoyed working with the guys.” says Tash, who produced the track in their Melbourne studio, “We’ve been working together for years on the road, so I had a great idea on how to capture their sound.” With additional engineering by Richard Stolz and Jan Skubiszewski, and mixed by renowned producer and mixer Dann Hume, High and Unsteady is the first collab between Tash Sultana and Pierce Brothers.

Having started out busking on Bourke St together back in the beginning of their careers, the brothers and Tash have been friends for over a decade now, touring all over the planet together. It was halfway through 2021 when Tash had the idea to explore a collaboration, opting to produce the track themselves. “We’ve loved everything that Tash has done over the years, and when they had the idea to collaborate, we jumped at the opportunity!” says Jack. “Pat and I put together the bones of the track so when we got into Tash’s studio we had a base from which to create and explore new sounds. Tash is one of the most talented producers we’ve had the pleasure of working with, they brought so many new sounds to mix that we would never have even thought of. I didn’t know what a mellotron was before that day!”

After an extended hiatus where they have spent time away from the touring circuit to travel, write and record new music, Pierce Brothers have today announced the release of their new single Dentist, a classic, indie-folk number that represents vulnerability during a trying time. The boys have also released a beautiful performance based music video, and similar to their last single Kanko, the music video was put together with performances filmed in isolation at their homes; a true sign of the times.

Written during the first lockdown of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, produced by Jan Skubizeski (John Butler, The Cat Empire), mixed by Phil Threfall (Illy, Ed Sheeran), and mastered by Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering (The Tesky Brothers, The Cat Empire)  Dentist has smooth folk hooks, with deep emotional lyrics. Fans of the classic Australian folk elements found in The Tesky Brothers or Paul Kelly will love this new instalment from one of Australia’s favourite duos.

Pierce Brothers’ second release in 2020, Dentist is more of a band vibe than their previous single Kanko. “After Kanko, we wanted to explore a deeper sound, and bring some harmonica back into the studio, which is something our recordings have been missing,” Jack says about the single, “This song was written during the first lockdown earlier in the year. I really wanted to step up my writing so, along with a friend of mine, I started doing a writing exercise every night. This song came out of one of those exercises. The word was Dentist. What flowed out was a reflection on the vulnerability we feel when things are out of our control and we don’t know what’s going to happen. Thats what the song is ultimately about, vulnerability. The dentist part is just a word.”
Since Pierce Brothers burst onto the scene with 2014’s It’s My Fault, Dentist is the second wholly independent release from the duo, preceding Kanko, which was released earlier this year.  Both singles are part of a larger body of work being released throughout the rest of 2020 and early 2021. “This year has thrown everyone around like a ragdoll. Tour plans moved time and time again, and going in and out of lockdown.” Jack says, “I’m so excited to have so many new songs in the can and ready to release over the summer! It’ll be nice to see our friends, family, and fans again when we’re allowed back out, and to bring everyone some new material!!” 

DENTIST  is out September 25 through Ditto.

It's been a big year for the Pierce Brothers! Their captivating fusion of roots and foot stomping indie folk has had an extensive January of touring, gaining support slots with The Beards, Ash Grunwald, the Bamboos, Icehouse, BONJAH, Donovan Frankenreiter and many more. Smashing together high-energy performances and mixing harmonies reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkle, with the old folk of Neil Young and the shuffle and shake of Mumford and Sons; their alluring tunes have won over crowds through out the country.

 

The Melbourne based twins have graced festival stages through to wild Bourke St Mall sets; and they're not stopping any time soon. With 2500 pre-release CDs snatched up in the short space of this year, and a blinding EP launch at the Evelyn to a sell out crowd, the boys are on a fresh run of shows to showcase their new video clip and single ‘Blind Boys Run’.

'Blind Boys Run' their new single from their recently released EP of the same name has gained traction on Triple J Unearthed, with the duo's first single release already topping the roots charts at number 1. A tour up the east coast booked in and another big winter on the cards places the Pierce Brothers as an act to keep your eyes on.

Pierce Brothers have just dropped their new single Brother, a crescendo-building indie folk anthem, out today, February 12.  The final track to be released before they drop their new album, Brother focuses on being away from family, a theme especially prescient now when so many family and friends are being kept apart as we head into the second year of COVID-19 [Listen: BROTHER].  Brother is accompanied by a light-hearted performance-based music video, as the band is constantly interrupted by the aforementioned brother brilliantly spliced with sweet, nostalgic footage from their childhood [Watch: BROTHER]. The single is the last to be released from the Pierce Brothers’ highly anticipated sophomore album, Into The Great Unknown which debuts on March 5, 2021. They have also today announced the first leg of their national regional tour, kicking off with their Victorian show dates through March, April and May, featuring shows at The Espy on April 24 and The Corner Hotel on April 30, their first headline shows in Melbourne in over twelve months.

Written and performed for years before they finally put it down in the studio, Brother displays the anthemic build and crescendo for which Pierce Brothers have become known during their live performances. Opening with a quiet, reverb heavy and overdriven acoustic guitar, the track soon delves through rich harmonies, as drums and percussion are slowly introduced throughout the hook-laden chorus. The tune then kicks it into the next gear with the drop of the electric guitar solo before jumping up the octave and galloping to the final verse and chorus. Produced by Jan Skubiszewski (John Butler, The Cat Empire), mixed by Phil Threlfall (Illy, Ed Sheeran), and mastered by Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering (The Teskey Brothers, The Cat Empire), Brother is a slow burn anthem that leads to the kind of massive payoff that the Pierce Brothers have dedicated their careers to performing, and will have fans of Lumineers and Mumford and Sons jumping and singing by the final chorus.

Brother is the fourth track to be released from Pierce Brothers much anticipated sophomore album Into The Great Unknown, set for release March 5. Recorded at Jan Skubizeski’s Red Moon Studios in Gisborne between the two Victorian lockdowns in 2020, the new album explores previously uncharted territory for the twins. “With strings arrangements, female backing vocals, and larger performances than we’ve ever done in the studio, this album is striving to be something grander than what has come before,” says Jack, “the lack of endless touring paved the way for a deeply thought-out experience.”

Along with their new single, the brothers have released a run of Victorian regional dates to coincide with the release of the new album. With borders opening, expect new shows added to the already stacked Victorian tour run. “In 2021 we’re planning on an entire regional Australia run!” Pat tells us, “but the problem is that if we announce tickets too far in advance, there’s risk of border closures between the announce and the date of the gig. We want to avoid all postponing/cancellations of shows so this year it’s announce and GO!”

Pierce Brothers have taken their unique brand of folk music from busking on the streets of Melbourne to the world.

Comprising of twin brothers Jack and Pat Pierce, the multi-instrumentalists have been shaking dance floors and selling out rooms across UK, Europe, Canada, USA & their native Australia. Their irresistible energy and world-class live show has generated a word of mouth buzz not seen for some time.

2017 EP ‘The Records Were Ours’ came in at #9 on the ARIA chart after topping the iTunes charts across the globe. The same year saw the brothers embark on a huge North American tour in support of Tash Sultana. This led to the band signing with Paradigm agency who booked their first North America/Canada headline tour in 2018

This year Pierce Brothers will release their highly anticipated full-length debut album 'ATLAS SHOULDERS'. The album was recorded over a week in Byron Bay and is set for release on October 26, 2018.
