Smerz on NTS: Oslo Teenage Mix 18.02.2021

On 04.03.21 at 2000cet @oddyxey premiered the second installment of Pavillion, a series of audio compositions that are spatially placed within a 60 minute field recording of a specific location or sonic landscape.

Pavillion (47.4940444, 11.1660155) captures the sound of music-esque hills on the border of Germany and Austria where I spent 5 days during summer 2020 in preparation of the group exhibition Wolpertinger at Heden Gallery Den Haag.

Techno collaborations don’t come much more exciting than Neon Chambers. Made up of UK titan Sigha and famously experimental Frenchman Kangding Ray, the pair have very much defined the modern sound of the genre with their solo careers. When coming together for their blistering live show, they fuse avant-garde sounds with machine-driven grooves and work up music that manages to make an impact on the floor as well as fire your cerebral cortex. 

Later this year, the pair will play at Dekmantel 2019, but before that we have a set to get you in the zone as to what to expect. Of course, it is a stylish and boundary pushing exploration of tempo and texture that is all up close and intricate synthesis one moment, then more laid back dub swagger the next. Never rooted to one sound world, there are cosmic vibes as well as raw industrialism all touched upon, and the result is as arresting as you would expect from this hugely proficient pair.

London-based producer and DJ @therealendgame is the latest signing to the Hyperdub label with his four-track EP entitled Flesh: a distillation of forward-thinking club music, drawing from genres such as grime, kizomba and dancehall, and converging into the experimental sounds of Bala Club; the collective that Endgame is part of, and is shaping a new underground sound in the capital. Endgame has worked along the frantic club track axis with his self-titled EP for Lisbon’s Golden Mist label in 2015 and this year’s Savage EP on New York’s Purple Tape Pedigree label, and with Flesh the lines are being sharply drawn – or slashed apart, perhaps. Heady machinations of ice-cold riddims, convulsing synths and face-melting vocal samples are executed with glee and originality. For his Choice Mix, Endgame lays it all out.

🎃 attention all you ghouls - i've made my hour-long halloween-themed set from the recent 𝖁𝖆𝖕𝖔𝖗𝖘𝖕𝖆𝖈𝖊 𝕸𝖆𝖉𝖓𝖊𝖘𝖘 livestream event available to download, for just a couple chucks - it's chock full of original Nmesh tunes spanning the last decade +, as well as other spooky seasonal selections - i had a lot of fun putting this together for VaporspaceSTL, and Mike Mazzotta of VIDEOPUNKS (aka The Basement Labs) *killed it* on the *eye candy* (the full set with visuals will be uploaded soon to the NmeshTV youtube channel) - it's also the first time my 5-year-old daughter recorded plugs for me, and they're rather hilarious - halloween might be over, but you can still reminisce - hope you enjoy.

This mix sees Patricia (Max Ravitz) blending tracks from an array of the producer/DJ’s fellow Ghostly International artists - Matthew Dear, Matrixxmann and Steve Hauschildt to name a few. In doing so, Patricia demonstrates just how adept Ghostly artists have been at spinning the club sounds of the label’s Michigan birthplace to innovative new ends. Busybody Drexciyan machine-funk, stern techno stomps, broken-beat club numbers and leftfield house jams all feature here, and the mix closes out with a few minutes of dreamstate ambience from Mary Lattimore. Patricia’s own productions are sprinkled throughout - as well as ‘You Open Me (Differences Mix)’ we also get the woozy, weightless electronics of ‘Ctenophora’ and the skittering electro jam ‘Dr. Oetker’s Ristorante’, both of which featured on Patricia’s 2020 Ghostly drop Maxyboy.
