This mantra finds its source in the Vedas, specifically the Taittirīya-Saṃhitā (Yajur Veda). It is a tiny extract from a hymn invoking all the cosmic forces - Agni, Soma, Varuṇa, Sarasvatī, Viṣṇu and so on, for blessings of health, longevity, prāṇa (life-force), ojas (spiritual energy), clarity and immortality (self-realisation).

This blessing however, isn't simply about living your full human life span of 100 years. The mantra says:
 
"May it happen that you live a life of hundred years,
with fully functioning Indriya-s (senses)
to pursue and develop a hundred noble qualities"

This is a beautiful blessing to share with our loved ones, traditionally to those much younger than us - babies, children, nieces, nephews, little brothers and sisters & students.
