The general representation of Caribbean coastal music often goes hand in hand with certain stereotypes; a focus on watered-down music styles and clichéd imagery. With 'Mar de Leva', Bclip represents Caribbean explicit music, highlighting the raw sound of the urban coastal youth. Aside from a couple of global club tunes, this mix mainly incorporates genres that developed from street culture, and are influenced by African diasporic music styles, such as: Champeta (Criolla, Urbana), Guarapo (Champeta’s cousin but in 6/8 time), Passa Passa (Cartagena’s version of Dancehall), Mode Up (Dembow from the Colombian island San Andrés), Vacile Picotero (Barranquilla’s Champeta with the occasional drumcomputer frenzy played with the fingers), etc. This is only a small portion of the wide variety of genres that the coastal urban communities of countries like Colombia and Panama have to offer.

@bclipdj is a Colombian/Boricua music producer, DJ, and curator based in Bogotá, Colombia. He runs @Pariarecords and is a member of the Neo-Picotero duo @BoomFullMeke. He started producing music around Y2K, heavily influenced by the Caribbean picó soundsystem culture and a large variety of genres. Bclip concentrates on developing a style that seeks to innovate, including new sounds that retain the crudeness and essence of the barrio. The premise is to find new contexts in which these ghetto sounds don't need be streamlined to access new spaces.
