The term “olly illy oxen free”…
Olly olly oxen free is a catchphrase used in such children's games as hide and seek to indicate that players who are hiding can come out into the open without losing the game.

This is a flat out party song with a very important message to every kid. Be whoever you are, cast off your fears, and don’t be ashamed of what you are inside…in other words, come out! Just like in the game. Celebrate that person and join the party.
So without overtly saying it, this is very much a song for kids who might find themselves in the closet…but that closet could represent anything, even just being shy. It’s universal.
The song’s set to a party Bo Diddley beat. Throw in a little Buddy Holly, a little bit of the Who, a quote from Joe Strummer of the Clash, and a little Rapper’s Delight breakdown and you got a dance party!

Olly Ollie Oxen Free

This was the first song written for the record, and the one that gave the record it’s direction. The hope was to step out some from the last record (Hoots, Hollers, and Rooftop Serenades) which was very Brooklyn centric, and try to make this record more universal.
The lyrics convey a welcoming to all, neighbors, friends, and strangers alike, with an invitation to the House of Song, where people find their place at the universal table.
There’s also an environmental element to the lyrics, “ocean blue, forrest green, and a mountain blue…”
It starts off like gospel music and ends like a New Orleans style street parade, lots of singing, clapping, accordions and trumpets making a big celebratory party.
