Dynasty Handbag: Titanic Depression—co-conceived with artist SUE-C—reimagines James Cameron’s 1997 Hollywood hit as a hilariously bleak parable of human arrogance in today’s era of runaway, consumerism-driven climate change. In both a live performance and a multimedia event, Dynasty Handbag (Jibz Cameron) combines animation, video, soundscapes, and improvisation to turn this well-worn narrative into a comical and touching exploration of Hollywood’s obsession with disaster plots and our own morbid fascination with death.

Black holes could have been relegated to mathematics and remained a physical absurdity. They were the outcome of a thought experiment, a fantastical imagining. Imagine matter crushed to a point. Don’t ask how. Just imagine that. But nature thought of a way to make them by killing off massive stars. These dead stars collapse under their own weight so catastrophically that even light gets dragged down the hole, casting a shadow on the sky. That shadow is the event horizon, left behind while the stellar material continues to fall to an unknown fate. For the first time in human history, we have seen a black hole. The image was captured by Event Horizon Telescope, a composite telescope the size of the whole Earth.

Join Pioneer Works Director of Sciences, Janna Levin, alongside Dr. Sheperd Doeleman, Director of the Event Horizon Telescope, and theoretical physicist Prof. Andrew Strominger to consider the staggering implications of event horizons from astrophysics to the theory of everything.

The Bomb at 75: Jeffrey Zink

"Through a broad range of educational programs, performances, arts and
science residencies, and exhibitions, Pioneer Works seeks to transcend
traditional disciplinary boundaries, foster community, and provide a space
where alternative modes of thought are supported and activated in tangible
ways.

The organization was founded in 2012 by artist Dustin Yellin and is located
in a 25,000-square-foot manufacturing warehouse in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
After an extensive renovation, the facility now houses artist studios,
exhibition and performance spaces, a science lab, a recording studio, and
other spaces as needs arise. The floor plan is open and flexible,
encouraging a transparent, collaborative environment where international
artists, musicians, scientists and educators can co-exist and create
together.

Entry to Pioneer Works’ main exhibition space and artist-in-residence
studios are free and open to the public Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 6
p.m. Tours are available upon request.
