Nuvolari:the opera 2010 (draft)

Extract from the award-winning interactive work for Channel Four Television. This is a linear sequence from the aria 'Game Plan'.  " Weird and wonderful" THE GUARDIAN.  " the new direction in opera" BBC LATE SHOW.  " The mix of instrumental and computer synthesizer music is striking " DAILY TELEGRAPH. The 5K Pursuit Opera is a unique fusion of art and sport where track cyclists and opera singers interact through a wired up velodrome and sensors drive a computerised electronic score. The speed and tactics of the performers determines the tempo and outcome of the words and music. The cycle racing is for real and the winners and losers control the final plot. As the interaction between the athletes, the velodrome and the performers occur in real time, no two operas are ever the same.The opera pioneered the use of interactive technology including sensors linked to C Lab's 'human clock' software that translated speed into midi inputs to control the music tempo, and the innovative use of the EMS Soundbeam in transforming track positions into musical motifs. The system was controlled by three Atari computers that could instantaneously adjust the music score and libretto to whichever team was in the lead.This information was projected as notation and lyrics to be followed by the musicians and singers. 5K Pursuit Opera 1992 (extract)

Score for Full Dome production ASTRONAUT commissioned by National Space Centre, UK. Sequence opens with the reveal of and glide-through of the European Space Station with a kind of retro/future world paradox musically explored through a pseudo Romantic pastiche .


Astronaut 2006 (extract)

Score for 360 degree Full Dome projection performed by the Grammy winning Nashville Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Albert-George Schram. The work explores chaos to order through the Big Bang theory, from Plasma Voids to the Birth of a Star, from the Reveal of the Supernova through to the ethereal elusivity of the Nebula, and finally the piano motif revealing the Hubble telescope, floating above the Blue Planet. Incidentally, all sound effects you hear in this sequence, were created by the instruments of the orchestra. Recorded in 15.1 surround. The score won 'best soundtrack' at the European Festival of Immersive Cinema, IFF '09. Recorded at the Schermerhorn Symphony Centre, Nashville, USA.
