Atlanta based producer Matt Mansfield aka Piper Street Sound has created a collaborative EP of instrumental Reggae music with legendary Reggae guitarist Andy Bassford (Toots and the Maytals, Dennis Brown, Horace Andy, Culture, Roots Radics). 'Black Eyed Peace' follows 2020’s 'Small Plate / Rid Them EP' but puts a focus on guitar melodies masterfully executed by Maestro Bassford. The songs still bear Piper Street’s customary horn heavy and dub infused style but move into some new territory; elements of Rocksteady abound, major keys now bounce along side their minor key brethren, Yaya Brown’s akete drumming prods and propels the rhythms carved by the ultra tight drumming of Brian Daggett and the bass of Mansfield, Chris Case’s keyboard mastery blazes along side the horns of Will Scruggs, Jonathan Lloyd and Dashill Smith. 

'Black Eyed Peace' is a collaborative affair pieced together gradually over the course of the pandemic, the horn sessions miraculously took place the week before everything shut down, and all other elements were recorded in home studios and electronically gathered by Matt, who acted as track-herd and trail guide, scouting ahead, blazing a path while shooting fearful glances behind at the specter of disease and death that shadowed the procession through the forest of fear.

Piper Street Sound found a sacred glade, a clearing in the forest with room for hope, and got to work building a fire with his fellows, over which to craft this musical brew, heavily dosed with dubwise analog effects, shimmering and splashing spring reverbs, rich and hearty tape delays, the guitar mastery of a musical hero floats atop as frothy foam, and love for humanity is the base malt. Black Eyed Peace ft. Andy Bassford

Piper Street Sound is back with a sprawling EP that collects new vocal versions and remixes of two instrumental reggae songs originally released in 2020; “Small Plate” (a collaboration with Augustus Pablo’s son Addis Pablo) and “Rid Them”. While the vinyl release focuses on the more reggae centric material, including two new vocal versions by veteran Jamaican dancehall artist General Pecos, the digital release includes some remixes that range a little further stylistically; with influences that include cumbia, electronic, and even trap.

Piper Street Sound, real name Matt Mansfield, is a musician, producer, and sound engineer with a focus on dub reggae. He maintains a studio in Clarkston, Georgia, on the outskirts of Atlanta, where he uses the techniques of dub and electronic production to explore global soundscapes and instigate musical intersections. With over twenty years of recording, performing, and touring as bassist and live dub engineer, Mansfield artfully crafts this EP by connecting the dots to just a few of the musical links and personal influences he has across the globe, providing something for every listener while sparking new connections.

The original 'Small Plate / Rid Them' EP was envisioned as a preview of the potential for the two instrumental riddims that constitute it; he had always intended to add vocals eventually. Releasing instrumentals before vocal versions gives the instruments space to be themselves before being instantly associated with the vocal they host. Piper Street Sound’s instrumentals have a life of their own, though they're meant to be malleable, like a folk song, easily used to support new melodies and lyrics.

The headliner of the release is a two-part collaboration with General Pecos (real name Lloyd Anderson), a foundation Dancehall artist from Jamaica who gives a totally new direction to the original tracks. Pecos adds a special cadence and style to everything he does, perhaps this has to do with the range of music he has been involved in; starting with boastful and fun sexually charged lyrics and a lightning fast delivery in some big digital dancehall/ragga hits during the the late 80’s and early 90’s, he also recorded for some early Jungle/Drum N Bass producers as well, and later transitioned into a more spiritual Rasta influenced style.

Pecos’s features on this release are no exception to his daring yet nuanced style, typical of Jamaican sound system and dancehall culture. On "Always Ashine”, he uses uplifting spiritual references with a bold and almost boastful confidence, creating a satisfying juxtaposition to Mansfield’s tight instrumentals. “Waves Rocking the Boat” seems at the start as though it will be playful, but quickly transitions into a low swinging chorus that feels soothing despite lyrics that speak of suffering. Here the marimba de chonta, a folkloric diatonic marimba made from chonta palm played on the pacific coast of Colombia and Ecuador, makes an appearance, whose water drop-like sonic textures fit nicely amongst sea metaphors that speak of pushing on despite difficulties, eventually leading the listener towards a feeling of overcoming.


This release sees Piper Street Sound blending years of different phases of production into different, softer forms, creating the musical foundation and then stepping back and trusting his collaborators to take the work to new places based on what they do best. It’s quite a diverse EP taken as a whole but each song works on its own and synthesizes the elements at play in a way that creates a balanced listening experience.

Small Plate / Rid Them Remixes

Piper Street Sound returns with a strident march forward in Hulusi. 

Conceived during the early stages of a pandemic, with the Atlanta-based multi-hyphenate Matthew Mansfield's signature blending of production styles, layers of acoustic, analog, and digital performances at last lock in and unfold in time to an insistent Steppers riddim with a pace and message that gets the blood moving. 

In collaboration with NYC based Dub gorgon Subatomic Sound System, Lee “Scratch” Perry’s band for over a decade, and featuring contributions from luminaries that span a wide network of timeless titans and studio assassins, the end result plays like a flag-planting campaign of the past INTO the future. 

The title refers to the instrument used to capture the piece's main theme, an ancient Chinese 3-chambered flute that reads somewhere between melodica and bagpipes, a brash but plaintive melody. Fleshed out and supported by dread performances from Mansfield's urgent bass, Christo Case on synths and keys, Brian Daggett on pounding drums, and horns by Jonathan Lloyd, the production eventually manifested into the righteous machine presented here. 

The digital release features Piper Street Sound's A-side cut, a trio of edits from Subatomic Sound System's extended mix of the tune, and an instrumental version with expanded guitar work by frequent collaborator to some of Jamaica's Pantheon of musical greats, Andy Bassford. Those whose ears perk up at the words 'extended mix', be joyous. There's also a 10" vinyl offering in the works, featuring full-length dubs by both Piper Street and Subatomic (pre-order begins Oct 14). 

J-Lloyd's horn section stabs in regal staccato before unfurling banners reminiscent of the Golden Days, over an increasingly digital riddim that surges and pulses with militant energy. Guitars by Bassford sting and slash across the piece's swirl of dub delay and reverbs, accenting the polyrhythmic march of the beat. They shine fully on a track of their own. A stark vocal testimony from none other than Dancehall legend General Pecos recruits listener-soldiers to the Gideon War, a literal "mental, spiritual, physical war" necessitated by the times. If The End is indeed upon us, Piper Street Sound and his cohort intend to meet it head-on and eyes-forward.

Atlanta producer Piper Street Sound has created his most accessible and organic offering to date. These songs grow from the traditions of Dub Reggae but gently expand in new directions; with under-spoken and up-punching poetry from street photographer John Arthur Brown, a gracefully slinking Melodica instrumental by Augustus Pablo’s son Addis, and a refreshing Marimba de Chonta version by Jhon ‘Pitufo’ Cortes of Colombia’s Afro-Pacifíco and Reggae welding Plu Con Pla. An all-star cast of Atlanta and Athens musicians, with a full horn section, are the musical foundation on which Piper Street Sound constructs and demolishes soundscapes of ever-shifting echoes and sprawling-while-decaying tone shadows.

Dialect Trio's second album Elements of Style (self released April 2013) saw the band serve up a heady brew of music- Its massive flavor defied tidy genre boundaries. Cohesively and with bluesy funkiness the album included elements of north, central and south American folk musics blended with elements of Afro-Latin rhythms and African, Middle Eastern and Balkan pop and folk. But you know it isn't really about isolating and identifying the specific genres that went into the work- the music takes its own path that more often than not doesn't really require a name. Elements of Style’s conglomeration of influences was a perfect petri dish for some great producers’ remixes to flourish in. 
The remixed tracks are arranged in the same order as the original album so this album can be listened to as a B side to the whole A side which was Elements of Style. If you haven’t yet go listen to and download the original at dialecttrio.com. This remix album put together by Matt Mansfield of Dialect Trio who also produces Dialect Trio’s recordings as Piper Street Sound and John Newell (El Guero Unico) of The Global Bass Experience. The choice of remix artist was very specific for each song, each song was handed out like an assignment, to some of Piper Street Sound’s favorite musical minds and the results are diverse, listenable and fantastic. Fans of breathing, good food and sex will be sure to love it.

Elements of Style Remix Track Descriptions
Osaka DJ and producer JNice starts things off with his ZUKE & JUKE remix of B’alam. This twitchy, angular treatment of the steady, dub-influenced original track takes its heavy psychedelic sound and jacks up the intensity into the frenetic by adding a host of synths, sound f/x, and an upbeat energetic rhythm arrangement. 
Argentine Cumbia-crossover master Damo Naimad explores Chicha De La Piedmont’s airy ambience by rearranging rhythms and f/x, and adding a new synth melody line. The result is a fresh, modern, unhurried sound that stays true to the original’s use of expert percussion and sense of space.
Global Bass Experience jefe and driving force El Guero Unico delivers an intriguing reconstruction of the group’s Saharan-influenced Desert Blues, a pulsing, Acid-Jazz trip out, with EGU providing multiple new instrumental tracks and takes on the original. A trance-like rhythm and several swirling, deconstructed key arrangements center around Russ Bledsoe’s original guitar takes, making ‘Desert Red’ a haunting exploration. 
Piper Street Sound wields his IDM hammer and reshapes Funky Clarkston, the album’s most upbeat AfroBluesFunk offering, into a multi-headed digital dinosaur of destruction. Using his library of the group’s original takes and his staggering production know-how, the producer extraordinaire fashions a marching dystopian glitch-fest complete with new themes and melodies, while using deconstructed takes from other Dialect Trio works, all to staggering effect. 
Cumbia Digital producer Ale Cassis delivers a stripped-down, spaced-out version of Cumbia Clarkston. The interplay between a trap-like rhythm track and expert re-arrangement of the tune’s original latin percussion, combined with interesting ambient vocal samples and tasteful preservation of original melodic content make for a powerful, minimalist thought piece.
Rafael Aragon expands upon Sephardim’s melodic mode with new instrumentation and a reimagined structure. Heady psychedelic keys and swirling guitars give way to a pounding upbeat rhythm that brings the desert to the club, and vice versa. 
Elements Of Style’s massive set piece John Brown’s Dreadful Right Hand, in the hands of Columbian Tropical Bass wunderkind Dany F, emerges as a revolving strobe of steady cumbia rhythms over original elements, and frenetic ADD-addled club hardcore. By turns plodding and methodical one moment, then pushed up and over the edge with an ultra-fast champeta(?) beat the next.

Piper Street Sound - Hulusi (feat. General Pecos) [Radio Edit]

Piper Street Sound and Atlanta-based Roots Reggae outfit E.R.E, or Eclectic Roots Ensemble, released their album Feelin’ It on April 21st (2014). This EP of 6 Dub re-imaginings takes their rootsy, old-school sound to new depths. With PSS at the board, the tunes take on added dimensions, with 3 deep dubs and 3 Latin Cumbia-Dub versions.

Babylon Can’t Stop This Dub takes the original earnest riddim and morphs it, adding space and dimension with huge reverbs and atmospheric effects. The nyabinghi style percussion and drums takes on density and rhythmic dimension with delays. Ray-gun synth stings take this heady tune into alternate realities.
The Cumbia version of Babylon Can’t Stop This Dub focuses on the rhythm section, especially the conga/bongo/binghi drums, with added Latin hand percussion. The tune retains its spacey, dubbed-out feel but acquires a trance-like marching pace via shakers and guiro. 

Down in the Valley was one of Feelin’ It’s more upbeat tunes. In Down in The Dubby, PSS plays with drummer Rod Breland’s up-tempo steppers beat with delays, sample/repeats, and Dub-style added pauses. Bakeem’s vocals are chopped, flanged, delayed, and artfully dropped in place to great effect. 
The Cumbia version of Down in the Dubby features a lazy, sliding shekere feel and natural hand drums offset by twitchy tech-step shuffling of the original rhythm and pulsing key delays, punctuated by strategic vocal drops. 

Positive, one of Feelin’ It’s most dread riddims, made for perfect fodder for PSS’s way with f/x. In Positiversion, the plaintive, ascending melody shared by Paschal’s keys and the surf-rock tone of guitarist Dave Canis play nicely against walls of washed-out static hum and piling rhythmic complexity. Waves of accumulated delay noise and thunderous spring reverbs combine to otherworldly effect.
The Cumbia version of Positiversion combines interesting conga patterns, natural shekere, guira, and cabasa sounds with key-tone synth bass reconstructions that slowly degrade into sizzling bit rot.

Piper Street Sound is back with a sprawling EP that collects new vocal versions and remixes of two instrumental reggae songs originally released in 2020; “Small Plate” (a collaboration with Augustus Pablo’s son Addis Pablo) and “Rid Them”. While the vinyl release focuses on the more reggae centric material, including two new vocal versions by veteran Jamaican dancehall artist General Pecos, the digital release includes some remixes that range a little further stylistically; with influences that include cumbia, electronic, and even trap.

Piper Street Sound, real name Matt Mansfield, is a musician, producer, and sound engineer with a focus on dub Reggae. He maintains a studio in Clarkston, Georgia, on the outskirts of Atlanta, where he uses the techniques of dub and electronic production to explore global soundscapes and instigate musical intersections. With over twenty years of recording, performing, and touring as bassist and live dub engineer, Mansfield artfully crafts this EP by connecting the dots to just a few of the musical links and personal influences he has across the globe, providing something for every listener while sparking new connections.

The original "Small Plate / Rid Them" EP was envisioned as a preview of the potential for the two instrumental riddims that constitute it; he had always intended to add vocals eventually. Releasing instrumentals before vocal versions gives the instruments space to be themselves before being instantly associated with the vocal they host. Piper Street Sound’s instrumentals have a life of their own, though they're meant to be malleable, like a folk song, easily used to support new melodies and lyrics.

The headliner of the release is a two-part collaboration with General Pecos (real name Lloyd Anderson), a foundation Dancehall artist from Jamaica who gives a totally new direction to the original tracks. Pecos adds a special cadence and style to everything he does, perhaps this has to do with the range of music he has been involved in; starting with boastful and fun sexually charged lyrics and a lightning fast delivery in a few big digital dancehall/ragga hits during the the late 80’s and early 90’s, he also recorded for some early Jungle/Drum N Bass producers as well, and later transitioned into a more spiritual Rasta influenced style.

Pecos’s features on this release are no exception to his daring yet nuanced style, typical of Jamaican sound system and dancehall culture. On "Always Ashine”, he uses many uplifting spiritual references with a bold and almost boastful confidence, creating a satisfying juxtaposition to Mansfield’s tight instrumentals. “Waves Rocking the Boat” seems at the start as though it will be playful, but quickly transitions into a low swinging chorus that feels soothing despite lyrics that speak of suffering. Here, the marimba de chonta, a folkloric diatonic marimba made from chonta palm played on the pacific coast of Colombia and Ecuador, makes an appearance, whose water drop-like sonic textures fit nicely amongst sea metaphors that speak of pushing on despite difficulties, eventually leading the listener towards a feeling of overcoming. The marimba was played by Jhon 'Pitufo' Cortés of the band Plu Con Pla.

This release sees Piper Street Sound blending years of different phases of production into different, softer forms, creating the musical foundation and then stepping back and trusting his collaborators to take the work to new places based on what they do best. It’s quite a diverse EP taken as a whole but each song works on its own and synthesizes the elements at play in a way that creates a balanced listening experience.

And let’s face it, most of us bravedumb enough to continue following our musical dreams are just hoping to break even at this point. So enjoy this budget savvy dub for these lean times for us musical fools. With drums and bass at the fore, melodica and synths on sparse melody duties, while the rest of the instrumentation is pure tonal texture and bouncing rhythm buoyed by boinging springs, set a-flight with fluttering delays. ‘Punch Out’ is a heavyweight bass and drum version on the B side to boot.

Producer and multi-instrumentalist Piper Street Sound, aka Matt Mansfield of Atlanta, Ga, returns with Barrier Island. Dedicated to the imperiled Cumberland Island, this work reflects Mansfield's deep love for Georgia's wild places and the inspiration found there.  

This is music for runs through foggy dawns. Four instrumental pieces of nuanced electronic production afloat within a cloud of Dub effects and natural soundscapes. Sonic suggestions of water, birds, and insects feature throughout, culminating in the end piece ‘al·lu·vi·al’, an exploration into dripping rhythms and splashes of Dub-infused spring reverb.  Piper Street's stock-and-trade multi-layered mechanical tapestry approach is here woven with acoustic instruments and hand played percussion. Mansfield’s last few works had a dizzying effect while Barrier Island shows the producer in a more intimate, personal light. Where once were strident flourishes, now are found slowly-dawning epiphanies. Dark themes that on earlier work seemed ominous, here are more plaintive. This is an EP of quiet beauty, tinged with an urgent plea for ecological balance. 

Cumberland Island, the inspiration for this EP, is one of the last undeveloped barrier islands on the East Coast. Once owned in turns by the Spanish military, plantation-based agricultural concerns, and Gilded Age robber barons, the bulk of the island was gifted in perpetuity to the National Parks Department to remain a wild, undeveloped National Seashore in 1972. Cumberland Island is at the time of this writing in danger of being carved up and developed. Disruption of the aquatic and avian species and their food sources that season on and around Cumberland Island would have disastrous effects on a global scale.
