This mix was recorded at Institut für Zukunft in Leipzig, where we played a four hour opening set. We made some small edits and added some tracks to finalise the mix. There is a magic about playing opening sets, and this night was special in particular — the lights got turned off and we played our first ambient track as a tuft of smoke was blown into club, which remained midair in the middle of the dance floor, like a sculpture — and it slowly vanished. The first guest came in and sat down against the concrete column, listening attentively as more smoke-sculptures formed around him. We were happy to play the first 20 minutes just for him.

There is a place for digging called VKontakte, a Facebook-like social network with millions of pirated tracks where you can find almost anything. Also you can see who uploaded the tracks. And, around 2011-2013, I saw a name “Anton Shmargovich” almost near all music I was looking for. A nerd, ultra-digger, local legend (he’s making very popular ‘OKO’ public group on Facebook and aforementioned VKontakte) and the guy you can meet almost everyday around 20ft Radio in Kyiv (where he has a show called ‘Unaussprechlichen Kulten‘). The music selected carefully for this podcast was recorded between 1970s and 1990s, it spans from percussive Jazz Funk and translucent Minimal Dub to the anxious new-age Boogie and toxic synth Balearica “with lots of unknown masterpieces of unacademic Avant-garde for the romantics with moon hearts”

If you could place a dj booth anywhere in the world… where would it be & what would you play? 

I’d love to play some tunes on the ocean floor where it’s pitch black and everything is bioluminescent and a little alien. 

Earliest musical memory?

Probably listening to the blues. My parents were big on late 80s/ 90s blues revival stuff. We listened to a lot of Buddy Guy, Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, oh god I’ve heard that one Jonny Lang album so many times

Fuschia and deep blue

Favorite movie rave scene? 

Oh oh oh oh that one episode of star trek voyager where a young Q turns engineering in a rave

Favorite decade for music and why? 

Probably the 80s. I love disco stuff from the early 80s where it’s a hybrid of really talented engineers and producers, scaled back groups of live musicians alongside early drum machines and synthesizers. Not to mention the invention!! of hiphop, dancehall, house and techno

How do you hydrate at a gig? 

I’m really bad about drinking water at gigs but at home and work I’ve usually got a quart container of water I’m working on

Dream line-up? 

Just me and my friends DJing together and dancing together. Somewhere where we all feel comfortable. As a dancer and as a DJ, those are the most joyous parties.

There’s too many! I love snacks! Right now, i’ve got a box of ice cream sandos in the freezer tho

Advice to beginning dj’s? 

Don’t worry so much about playing the right tunes or trying to fit your style into something that you’re not 100% about. Just play tracks you love.

Secret weapon track?  

One of my fav budget bangers is S-express - Lollipop. There’s a million copies out there because it’s on the b-side of Superfly Guy and it goes really hard. There’s lots of variations of that one release so you gotta make sure you grab a copy with this b-side on it. 

DJ Pet Peeves? 

When the crowd’s too fucked up! If you can’t stand up anymore, it’s time to go home

Where do you want to be flown out to play in the future? 

Anywhere! I love visiting new places

Where do you see your rave self in 30 years from now?  

Hopefully still making music and still DJing. I don’t go out that much relative to some DJs because balance is really important to me - I don’t wanna get burned out on the things I love doing. 

Most underrated artist at the moment? 

Sighup/Nohup is a killer seattle DJ that deserves all the recognition in the world. If everything goes according to plan, we’ll have a record coming out together this year :)


What would you like to see in the future for the dance community? 

It’d be rad to see more of a culture of people buying music rather than pirating or streaming it. It does feel like things are moving in the right direction with the recent growth of bandcamp but I can’t help but feel like Big Streaming is a terrible behemoth where no gets paid but the platform.

We're back after a festive break with a mix from one of our top dons, co-founder Oli! As the cliché goes, this chuffin' legend needs little introduction. But... for the uninformed, and to give him some well deserved dues, we thought we'd have a go anyway. 

Since hosting the first Brudenell Groove party a little over 4 1/2 years ago, Oli's infectious passion and hard graft have established him as a standard-bearer of the party scene we hold so close to our hearts. Whether it be in the old den of KMAH, the dancefloor of Wire or many an early morning in the shisha bars and Woodhouse basements of yesteryear, his warm and inviting presence is unmistakable, and never unnoticed. On behalf of everyone, thank you for the encouragement to keep moving forward, the countless tip-offs, and all those late night walk ins! We hardly deserve ya :)

Vervemix 015: Strange Interactions

Nashville-based producer, percussionist, and DJ @mischa-lively (née Blake Barton) has held a special place in our hearts over the past few years, ever since first discovering his work through his parties, and recordings on RACECAR and his own imprint, New Love Unlimited. Every new mix from Mischa is a true joy and an event that is bound to cure whatever ails ya. Likewise, his productions sparkle, consistently turning up in mixes from our most beloved selectors. For that reason, there's no one we'd rather have help us ring in the beginning of this wild, troubled, and hopeful year, with his dreamy brand of life-giving, rhythm-forward soul and italo. Our little islands feel more and more like an archipelago of love after each listen, and for that we're ever thankful.

"At the end of 2019, @ilind and I discussed me recording a mix for their series Abstract Without Abstraction. Nearly a year later, after adapting to quarantine, I finally submitted a mix to them. I selected important records from my personal history (plus a few newer acquisitions) and focused on the long blend, honoring mood and song structure. No longer having a monthly DJ slot, this is a snapshot of what I might’ve played during hour 1 of 5 at Duke’s had the pandemic never took hold. What is strange is this mix was recorded in early October 2020, and was guided by thoughts of renowned laid-back resident DJ, José Padilla, mixed eerily just a couple weeks before his death on October 18, 2020. This is my interpretation of José’s Balearic resident ethos, albeit less beachy and much slimier. Thank you José for reminding us that the person mixing is just the conduit for the greater magic already existing in the music. And thank you Isaac allowing my submission."
