Making his Dekmantel debut with a flourish of symphonic, transcendental techno, Sepehr takes us into a fictional metaphysical zone he calls the Genesis Domain.

Over the past 10 years NYC-based Sepehr Alimagham’s versatile club music practice has taken in techno, D&B, electro, EBM and acid on a suite of scene-leading labels. This new EP builds on the pseudo-spirituality he explored on recent LP Fall From Grace with an exploration of an imagined space “where your reality can be reinvented at any given moment.”

On the A side, the title track sets the pace with a throbbing, sparkling-yet-spooky trip that allows a touch of trance into the mix, while ‘Delicate Senses’ explores snappier broken beat rhythms and edgy atmospherics with a distinctly moody outlook.

The mystical electro shades of ‘Twisted Solstice’ and ‘Planet Lonely’s melancholic 4/4 pastures strike a note between contemplative introspection and anthemic main stage energy. ‘Queen Of Demons’ is the consummate EP closer, leaning on brooding low end and snaking, intricate beats with a healthy dose of shimmering beauty up top.

Consistent with his versatile approach since day one, Sepehr proves any blend of tempos and rhythms can be folded into his vivid, evocative sound world — the results will always draw you in close until his vision becomes yours.

Step Ball Chain’s unconventional prototype band trickpony is the 11th release on the ever evolving imprint. An assortment of sensual cyber jams collaged together by the trio over timezones, birthed in Perth, Australia by Mike Midnight and Roza Terenzi; old friends joined by Helsinki’s visionary songstress Maria Korkeila. A trinity of alchemy blossomed into an audio rendition of exquisite corpse, layers of each entity glistening through amongst a united cosmos; trip hop atmospherics and downtempo drippings. 

The five track EP reveals a metamorphosis of nostalgia, a foot in the ever present and daydreams of future. A subconscious deep dive into lustful pop, guided by spine tingling vocal fantasies; textural hallucination, harmonic odes to the golden era underground and a flirtation with drum and bass, tribal percussive freakouts and dream tinged lyrics of desire. 

Pillow talk is a timeless exhibit of esoteric treasures, a portal to a private world of modern enchantment that reveals itself in new ways each listen, music for lovers created by a supergroup of innovators to be digested, shared and cherished.

‘WAR1209’ finds Ukrainian artist shjva inducing trance states across an album equal parts tripped-out and dubby. Spanning brooding lysergic visions and locked-in dance floor hypnosis, expect drowsily impressionistic soundscapes and darkly cinematic gear across the 9-track duration. Total sonic immersion for the oddballs and the freaks.

Terraforming uncharted alien terrain, tracks like ‘X-Side’ and ‘Upper Limit’ descend into sprawling, widescreen exploration. Fathomless landscapes serving as vessels for deep introspection. ‘Enigmatic’, on the other hand, opts for detail and precision-tooled dynamics while retaining that same wide-eyed sense of wonder. Where ‘Dragonfly’ offers fractal fuel for ceremony and ritual, ‘Cloudhopping’ and ‘Psy-Fi Alien Dub’ wade knee-deep through some dub techno murk. A testament to catharsis of body and mind, an homage to sentiment and intrigue.

‘Hyper:lost’ purveys two interlinked but distinct sides of an artist whose reputation has spanned a long and ever maturing path of sonic development. Where Raär’s signature intricacy manifests in the grittier ‘hyper’ half of ‘hyper:lost’, Whylie counters with the haunted but sentimental spatiality of the other - the ‘lost’.

For this is like a search through the dialectic of the machine; energetic fluxes and frenetic textural modulations of the hyperreal encounter swirls of melancholy and lush human washes of its seeker. These are the contradictions of a determinedly uncertain pursuit; of a head charge into the void.

Twin parts diagnosis and remedy of a present insanity. Heads down and knees up for the end.

Introduce yourself? Hometown? Where do you currently reside? 

Hi! My name is John, I was born in Massachusetts, in Boston. I currently live in Queens, NY with my fiancée Rochelle and our cats Chris and Cosey. If I can be honest, I’m a tremendous music nerd first and foremost. 

Favorite music collective atm?

There is a crew in Mexico City that is amazing called Ext. They are throwing really fun and free-spirited parties. Volvox and I went to play for them last year for a collaboration with our label. It was a killer party and it left a great impression on me. I gotta say though - the hot mass crew are doing the good work stateside. Any serious music heads who have never been to that space have to make the trip. 

Favorite mix series?

Daisychain, I really admire what Leesh is doing there. Many killer artists contributing and always very thoughtful presentation. 

How do you hydrate at a gig?

With my go to drink, the often misunderstood white wine spritzer. It’s half water! Drink these in the booth and you are good. In general if I’m partying I’m aiming to be drinking a glass of water with every drink so I can stay sharp. 

Dream b2b? 

Wow, great question. I guess I would have to say I would love to play b2b with Tama Sumo at a Panorama Bar for a long, exploratory closing set across many genres. She’s pretty much my favorite DJ in the world. She has good energy.

Describe the best dj/live set you have seen this year? 

CCL At Smangtasia festival. It’s hard to describe their style, that’s prob what makes it so good. Been really into Flora FM, CCL, Ciel, the TerraFirm & Is/was labels lately. Musically these are along the lines of colorful steppin’ liquid break house, if that makes ANY sense lol. Good music from good people at the end of the day. 


What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

Inclusivity. Creativity. Thinking outside the box. I feel that gatekeeping is one of the biggest problems for our scenes.  Breaking down insular behavior, I think promoters should stop booking the same people over and over while ignoring other quality talents in their midst. Very often I look at the programming of clubs and parties and I’m like oh! you booked XYZ again for the 11th time.. It could be a headliner or an opener I’m referencing - there are so many quality acts out there! In my ideal world more people get a chance to do this stuff that we love. 

In every dance community there are loads of musically talented individuals not getting their due. It can be alienating to feel like your putting all your blood, sweat and tears into your music to be denied opportunities. Critically though, there are two sides to this coin : artists, you can’t go around thinking people owe you something. For me that’s super toxic to the scene as well. What we need is a more open forum based around positive cultural exchange.
