Who are you? Where do you live?
 
I'm Kelsey Knotts currently residing in Pilsen, Chicago.

How do you hydrate in the club?

With Topo Chico and lime! It's kind of a Chicago thing thats stuck with me. If i'm somewhere else in the world, any type of carbonated water is chill.

Advice for beginning Dj's?

My advice for Dj's starting out is to find out what works best for you, don't let someone tell you that there is a definite right or wrong way to DJ. For technical aspects try counting the 4 to the floors listen for the claps and kicks. If you can't find a pair of CDJ's or Technics any kind of music software is TOTALLY CHILL. Make due with what you have don't let some jerk tell you other wise because gear is expensive!~ Oh and practice makes perfect fall down and get back up again, messing up train wrecking is totally chill just push the track back into place, most of the time people don't even notice a small blip even the greatest Dj's of all time mess up!

What do you wish to see in the future for the dance community?

I wish to see my friends thrive and in general would love to see more support within groups in America towards underground dance music because It's really hard in the DIY community to put a rave/show on anywhere in the states. It costs a lot of time and money. I have high hopes that communities will all continue to be diverse with line ups as well.

“I made this mix to pay tribute to nostalgic memories of what monsoons in the Sonoran Desert used to be. Long, blindingly hot, dry days would stretch out as the storm clouds built in the distance, waiting for the stinging sun to cool just enough. The first sign that they were moving in was the smell of sweet creosote and wet dirt in the air, and then, in a matter of moments, torrential downpour. From the top of a mountain, you could see the clouds moving swiftly around the valley and lightning striking every couple seconds. The rains let up as quickly as they came on. It was epic, it was moody, and it was always a sweet relief to be happily soaked by these dense storms. This June was the hottest on record in the desert, and monsoons have been scarce. I’m mourning the impact we’ve had on the natural cycles of the larger, older world, and simultaneously celebrating with hope for what was and what could be again.” - Madelyn aka Slowfoam

How is everything going with you right now?

How much time you got? ;P I'm going through change and constant flux, learning every day and staying present amongst the uncertainty.

Who currently inspires your music-wise?

My Climax babes Lucy X (@lucyecstasy) and Abnama(@abnama) inspire me all the time, sharing music with them stimulates me a lot and makes me feel really connected to sound and why I love it and they connect me to myself. Then when we bring it all together, fusion & magic! We are constantly morphing in sound too.  I first started mixing on Lucy X’s decks and she inspired me to keep exploring them. Her ear, craft, and authenticity blow me away every time. I am inspired by Tommie True, my friend and collaborator (Satoena & spit service) Tommie shares powerful messages through voice and sound and I can’t wait to play live with her. stay tuned for more spit service!!

I really love what Berkley and Jonathan are doing, I love couple duos.

I am inspired and excited by what's coming out of  Ruin, a necessary and empowering femme voice in these times.

Noff Weezy (@noffweezy) is a mad phreak for sound and I am really inspired by her drive and obsession with it.

Sophie Sweetland (@-tiffany)is a big inspo to me, has helped me trust myself a lot, and always inspired by what she creates. She can go everywhere and isn’t defined by one thing. she gives many people the opportunity to explore through sound .. shares her resources and is a massive inpso to everyone around her. Girl daddy of the dance community I think.

my oozey friend Special Guest DJ (@specialguest-dj), the records he puts out and creates are filled with such depth and experimentation. he is mad for lifting up friends and providing opportunity too.

What other activities have you dipped into with a break from djing?

I like to read a lot. I spend time thinking about histories, mythologies.. and try to express my adoration of all of these through music. 

I’ve taken a bit of a career change and I'm now a care worker checking in and looking after the most vulnerable in the communities over here which feels very grounding and keeps me grateful and appreciative of what I have around me. it’s challenging work but I love to challenge myself and see what comes out of this in the future.

Why do you think it's important to share music?

It's a way to connect, some sounds trigger something in us, and when that little thing makes someone else feel the same way it's cool. we can express how we’re feeling through sharing music. And inspire each other, challenge each other with the discovery of different sounds. and keep pushing it together, that's why I love working with lucy x and abnama through climax, they challenge me and we like to push each other with our differences and similarities in sound too..and to keep rocking not stopping with that.. you share yourself by sharing music. sometimes no communication needed when u share music together.

Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Today’s premiere comes from Vancouver-based artist wzrdryAV aka Kelly Nairn via the relatively new Brighton imprint, party and podcast series Accidental Meetings. 

The Canadian-based producer's tape, entitled Midnight Visions, is a tale of two sides — one characterised by beats, the other beatless. ‘Forgot About Time’ falls into the latter of those two categories. It’s filled with abstracted field recordings and synths swathed in static and hiss. Like the rest of Side B, the track has no hard edges. It’s an amorphous, 4-minute sound collage built from layers of stretched out electronics, white noise and the distant hum of machinery with no discernible origin. There are similarities to the murky, nebulous atmospheres of Pinkcourtesyphone, picnic and Low Flung, but ultimately wzrdryAV’s soundscapes, which incorporate lo-fi ambient, Detroit techno and a kind of hazy, formless dub, conjure their own inimitable environment. The full album is set to be released on March 5th. For now, ‘Forgot About Time’ provides a tantalising glimpse into Nairn’s self-contained world.
