Why do you think it's important to DJ? And/of why have you chosen to become a DJ? How long do you think you will keep it up?

Sometimes it feels like it chose me!  DJing can work as an exercise in self-reflection, a way to step outside myself and look back in on some part of my brain (soul?) that language can’t quite reach.  It helps me understand myself in some small, intimate way a bit better. I feel a similar way about DJing your friends’ tracks, it’s a way of accessing some unspoken aspect of your relationship you get to share in that moment.  I’ll probably just do it until it stops doing that for me.

Advice to beginning djs?

All those spur of the moment selections and wild blends you try when you’re starting out might be the bedrock of what makes your voice unique. Don’t lose touch with those as you improve “technique.” Which is a long way of saying “always have fun.”  

Describe the best dj/live set you have seen this year? 

If I can go back a bit to November it’s maybe Ben Bondy’s set at our party with Terry Radio crew.  Shredding viola over woozy downtempo cuts so beautifully it made Klauss tear up a bit.

What do you miss most about clubbing? 

I miss that last track… 7am light pouring in and the smiling faces of the folks you made it through the night with. The best!

Describe the vibe of your first DJ set?

Oh damn…
I think it was in Portland. I was touring a live set and got asked to DJ a couple lil things. The really memorable one was for the Spoiler Room crew. I nerfed almost every blend while Sean Pierce made everyone crepes. I don’t think I could have asked for a better first go.

Describe the first moment where you had an epiphany about your love for music?

The first day I got Napster I must have made 6 mix CDs. I was showing my dad all these songs from when he was like 17 and it dawned on me that I already was wayyyyy more invested in music than he ever was.

Favorite weird drug experience? 

I have on multiple occasions started watering the plants at Nowadays.

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

Universal Healthcare and more snacks at parties.

Ura- im ura - born in vancouver, currently living in montreal

Exfoliant- Salut Salut - Devon here. I am a photographer slash artist - Regretably not at the same time most of the time. I've mostly just been a lustful visitor to the music scene. I play out sometimes (depending on who rarely lets me...) I've had a radio show on n10.as for around 3 years. I grew up in the countryside with a cow field as my front lawn. Living in Montreal right now - maybe not for too long but I highly doubt a major shift in any plates anytime soon.

Exfoliant-  Montreal... I hate to disappoint anybody that has been pushing things here. But there's been a hard decline of available DIY spaces that can be available and sustained to push interesting artists instead of solely breaking the cost envelope. I'm hoping after all of this there will be some extreme urge to push and find new venues (myself included). Get Montreal running with enough spaces that people won't necessarily ~need~ to move way.  

3. Link to a club or diy space that needs help during this time.-- 
Ura- montreal doesn't have any good clubs or diy spaces at the moment, the only good raves in montreal are the greenhouse parties. shoutout greenhouse crew

Exfoliant- I feel if anybody in Montreal seeing this might be pissed but... there's not much. There have been groups and people that have truly kept the city alive. Some of these groups and individuals have hosted the best dance experiences for me...

How is everything going with you right now?

How much time you got? ;P I'm going through change and constant flux, learning every day and staying present amongst the uncertainty.

Who currently inspires your music-wise?

My Climax babes Lucy X (@lucyecstasy) and Abnama(@abnama) inspire me all the time, sharing music with them stimulates me a lot and makes me feel really connected to sound and why I love it and they connect me to myself. Then when we bring it all together, fusion & magic! We are constantly morphing in sound too.  I first started mixing on Lucy X’s decks and she inspired me to keep exploring them. Her ear, craft, and authenticity blow me away every time. I am inspired by Tommie True, my friend and collaborator (Satoena & spit service) Tommie shares powerful messages through voice and sound and I can’t wait to play live with her. stay tuned for more spit service!!

I really love what Berkley and Jonathan are doing, I love couple duos.

I am inspired and excited by what's coming out of  Ruin, a necessary and empowering femme voice in these times.

Noff Weezy (@noffweezy) is a mad phreak for sound and I am really inspired by her drive and obsession with it.

Sophie Sweetland (@-tiffany)is a big inspo to me, has helped me trust myself a lot, and always inspired by what she creates. She can go everywhere and isn’t defined by one thing. she gives many people the opportunity to explore through sound .. shares her resources and is a massive inpso to everyone around her. Girl daddy of the dance community I think.

my oozey friend Special Guest DJ (@specialguest-dj), the records he puts out and creates are filled with such depth and experimentation. he is mad for lifting up friends and providing opportunity too.

What other activities have you dipped into with a break from djing?

I like to read a lot. I spend time thinking about histories, mythologies.. and try to express my adoration of all of these through music. 

I’ve taken a bit of a career change and I'm now a care worker checking in and looking after the most vulnerable in the communities over here which feels very grounding and keeps me grateful and appreciative of what I have around me. it’s challenging work but I love to challenge myself and see what comes out of this in the future.

Why do you think it's important to share music?

It's a way to connect, some sounds trigger something in us, and when that little thing makes someone else feel the same way it's cool. we can express how we’re feeling through sharing music. And inspire each other, challenge each other with the discovery of different sounds. and keep pushing it together, that's why I love working with lucy x and abnama through climax, they challenge me and we like to push each other with our differences and similarities in sound too..and to keep rocking not stopping with that.. you share yourself by sharing music. sometimes no communication needed when u share music together.
