It's been hard to believe how fast the end of the year has gone. I just want to take this opportunity to take stock in all the amazing and talented people who have been around to give me hugs and vibes and dance next to me, for me, around me and with me. I made this mix for everyone that I've ever hugged at Bossa, every stranger that has come up to me and told me they liked the music I played after a set. Every person I've ever gone on a tinder date with. Everyone that's ever been to Sustain Release. Everyone I got the chance to meet in Berlin. Everyone I've ever shared a dance floor with and everyone in Brooklyn that makes up this beautiful scene we have the privilege to call home.

Thank you to everyone who has made this year as exciting as it's been. This mix is a toast to the strides we've all made as a dancing music family and to how much fun it is to build something together that we'll never let them take away from us.

After releasing New Zealand composer, drummer and producer Cory Champion’s acclaimed Clear Path Ensemble jazz album at the start of 2020, we’re proud to bookend the project with a new digital EP of remixes of songs off the album by Kush Jones, Christoph El Truento, AceMo, Glenn Astro, Daniel Hayles, and Champion under his Borrowed CS house and techno alias.

Where the Clear Path Ensemble album was a vivid ode to psychedelia, spiritual jazz, planetary rhythms and celestial oddities, these remixes turn his cosmic compositions into suped-up starcraft. Glen Astro and Kush Jones give ‘Jerry’s Funk’ a series of electro, dub techno and footwork re-rubs. Christoph El Truento and Borrowed CS both reimagine ‘Drip’ for the orbital nightclubs of the future. Mongo Skato rebuilds ‘Future Fatigue’ to a pounding pulse, and AceMo takes ‘Panorama Actual Spectral’ to Saturn and back. Rounding things out Daniel Hayles meditates on ‘Inner Space’ through sparse-but-emotive piano figures.

If you’ve already spent some time on the Clear Path Ensemble mothership, hearing how these considerable talents have reframed Champion’s jazz pieces is a real joy. And if not, start here on the dancefloor, before making your way back into the lounge bar later on.

How is everything going with you right now?

How much time you got? ;P I'm going through change and constant flux, learning every day and staying present amongst the uncertainty.

Who currently inspires your music-wise?

My Climax babes Lucy X (@lucyecstasy) and Abnama(@abnama) inspire me all the time, sharing music with them stimulates me a lot and makes me feel really connected to sound and why I love it and they connect me to myself. Then when we bring it all together, fusion & magic! We are constantly morphing in sound too.  I first started mixing on Lucy X’s decks and she inspired me to keep exploring them. Her ear, craft, and authenticity blow me away every time. I am inspired by Tommie True, my friend and collaborator (Satoena & spit service) Tommie shares powerful messages through voice and sound and I can’t wait to play live with her. stay tuned for more spit service!!

I really love what Berkley and Jonathan are doing, I love couple duos.

I am inspired and excited by what's coming out of  Ruin, a necessary and empowering femme voice in these times.

Noff Weezy (@noffweezy) is a mad phreak for sound and I am really inspired by her drive and obsession with it.

Sophie Sweetland (@-tiffany)is a big inspo to me, has helped me trust myself a lot, and always inspired by what she creates. She can go everywhere and isn’t defined by one thing. she gives many people the opportunity to explore through sound .. shares her resources and is a massive inpso to everyone around her. Girl daddy of the dance community I think.

my oozey friend Special Guest DJ (@specialguest-dj), the records he puts out and creates are filled with such depth and experimentation. he is mad for lifting up friends and providing opportunity too.

What other activities have you dipped into with a break from djing?

I like to read a lot. I spend time thinking about histories, mythologies.. and try to express my adoration of all of these through music. 

I’ve taken a bit of a career change and I'm now a care worker checking in and looking after the most vulnerable in the communities over here which feels very grounding and keeps me grateful and appreciative of what I have around me. it’s challenging work but I love to challenge myself and see what comes out of this in the future.

Why do you think it's important to share music?

It's a way to connect, some sounds trigger something in us, and when that little thing makes someone else feel the same way it's cool. we can express how we’re feeling through sharing music. And inspire each other, challenge each other with the discovery of different sounds. and keep pushing it together, that's why I love working with lucy x and abnama through climax, they challenge me and we like to push each other with our differences and similarities in sound too..and to keep rocking not stopping with that.. you share yourself by sharing music. sometimes no communication needed when u share music together.

A DJ and Producer of equally impressive measure, affiliated to the Touching Bass and BBZ collectives, a regular on Balamii Radio, and a truly passionate collector with a deep, deep knowledge of music. From DJing on community radio at the age of 14 and warming up for her father, to cementing herself as a main player on line-ups at incredible parties across London and beyond, she already has an unquestionable pedigree behind the decks.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
