Today marks an important day in history. Known as "De La Day" throughout the hip hop community, 3/3/23 marks the 35th Anniversary of De La Soul's Debut Album " 3 Feet High and Rising". It also marks a new age for De La and their fans as all of their music is now available on streaming services along with limited edition physical releases. After the long fight over royalty percentages and ownership of their music, paired with the recent passing of Trugoy The Dove, we can only imagine the whirlwind that Maceo, Pos and Prince Paul are facing. 

We wanted to revamp our series The 10s with a special, long overdue dedication and thank you to De La Soul and our supporters. "Plug Tunes" focuses on a few of De La's lesser known features as well as some known classics. The daisy flower symbolizes new beginnings as well as innocence and purity. De La gracefully mastered their own sound and lane that represents that perfectly.

My new "situation" has afforded me much more time to work on mixes than I had before.  I am currently sitting on four completed mixes and on the cusp of finishing a fifth.  Of course, all will be released at some later date.  I'm not sure why I'm taking so long to let go of these mixes, but I am.  Mix hoarder?  Whatever you want to call it, here's the first step toward rehabilitation.  Samples/breaks used to create the masterpiece that is Supreme Clientele, mixed like you've come to expect from Pipomixes. In the Summer of 1987 one album single-handedly ushered Hip Hop into a new era. During those hot NYC summer months, the sounds of Eric B & Rakim's Paid In Full blasted out of boomboxes on front stoops to the trunks of every boxed-out Beemer or tricked-out Benz from Westchester to Wyandanch.  Today marks the 25th anniversary of the album, and almost a quarter of a century later, the album's influence is undeniable. From movies [Paid In Full] to today's up-and-coming rappers [A$AP Rocky, (real name is Rakim) named after the God MC]  there is no questioning the legacy that this album has left on our culture. Lyrically and from a production standpoint this album changed everything. From Ra's magical visual wordplay and machine gun cadence to Eric B's cuts, this was a special album whose sound quickly furthered Hip Hop's growing reputation. The release of this album, also placed  Eric B.and Rakim in the spotlight on the fashion tip.  The duo's fresh styles transformed  the ordinary 'rapper look' of shell-toed-Adidas-sporting, all-black-leather-everything to a new style of backwards-Kangol-hat wearing, truck jewel-rockin' trendsetters. The album cover even featured (for the first time ever, possibly) the fresh and flashy styles of the young designer, Dapper Dan. So to celebrate the album's Silver Anniversary, we picked ten tracks that have used the elements of this classic to recreate their own music.

I think Mos Def was right when he said that the future of hip hop is in the instrumental album. I think 95% of my favorite releases of the last few years have been without emcees. Since I'm always looking for a new theme to base a mix around, I thought it would be a good idea to mix together my favorite cover songs, tributes, and reinterpretations of hip hop classics that have proliferated over the last few years. Now it just so happens, all these joints (or almost all) are emcee'less. The mix consists of tributes to, reinterpretations of, and covers by Miles Davis, Jeremy Taylor, El Michels Affair, Wu Tang Clan, Isaac Hayes, Biggie Smalls, Frank Sinatra, Madlib, J. Dilla, J. Rawls, Beatnuts, Pete Rock, Eryka Badu, Mr. Chop, A Tribe Called Quest, Carlos Nino & Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Damu the Fudgemunk, Jefferson Airplane, Tom Scott, Oh No, DJ Spinna, Black Moon, John Coltrane, and a few more that I can't remember. Listing all these name I bet you're probably thinking that this mix is like 3 hours long. Wrong. The mix runs just under 25 minutes. I know, I know, why so short? Well, you already know the answer to that. Quality over quantity. In any event, a lot of time, money, energy, and love went into this effort so I hope you all enjoy.
