Spinning Plates welcomes New Yorker DJ Spider onto its roster to kick off 2022 with his ‘Enter The Void’ EP, backed by a remix from Phil Moffa aka The Butcha. 

Rob Hampton, better known to most as DJ Spider, has been releasing his twisted take on Techno and experimental electronica for over a decade on the likes of The Trilogy Tapes, REKIDS, Vanguard Sound! and Berceuse Heroique as well as his and Dakini’s own Plan B Recordings and its sub-labels BTU and Sublevel Sounds. Here he joins the roster of Spinning Plates, the London-based label that’s established itself as a go to purveyor for leftfield leaning Techno, Electro and more. 

‘Incineration Of Years And Truth’, our premiere for today, completes the EP, edging things into a dubby territory courtesy of smooth chord sequences, spiraling echoes and bumpy, reduced drums. 

DJ SPIDER: This record is dedicated to my good friend Mike Huckaby. He planned on remixing "Incineration of Years and Truth" back when I originally made it in 2011, but we never got around to actually making that happen. I'm also honored to have my other close friend Phil Moffa on remix duties. There were many sessions in Phil's studio (Butcha Sound Studio, NYC) where we used to jam with Mike whenever he would come to New York to DJ or hang out. We used to play with synthesizers for hours. We were all good friends and it was perfect to have Phil on this record as well! Mike taught and inspired us to have fun with making music and push ourselves to be the best that we can be. We will love him forever.

Autopilot has always been a proven tool at a time when you have other personal things to do, for example, prepare a speech for the upcoming intergalactic congress. The scientific philosophy of life is impatient with flaws but is attractive when it comes to its insatiable thirst for knowledge. That is why this confusing adventure and its troubles have given so many new emotions that marked the next strategic cycle. A special request came from the Data Center, interrupting the tired contemplation:

— Don't get too excited! I see you're ready to hit the dashboard.
— There is no privacy here… Ok, I think we've discovered something interesting. I feel there will be a reason for some real relaxation soon!

Greyscale's 25th full length album comes from one of our most favorite and longtime label guests. Who else? But, Gradient! All and all, this is his 4th album with us and each album seems to just get better and better. Similar to previous albums, each track is named in numerical order after a word taken from the album's name. While this makes it a bit more difficult to remember which track is which it also leaves everything up to your own imagination. There is no visual to these heavy techno focused tracks. 'Dub Ornaments' establishes 10 tracks of various energy made for dancefloor as well as long late-night drives into darkness. 'Ornament 01' opens up the album and immediately covers you with a warm glow. As chords swell into the picture, you get led to the dancefloor and things just get more addictive from there. '02' gives off serious 90's minimal house vibes with a classy vibe reminiscent of Detroit legends. This is sure to go over great with techno and house fans alike. Part '03' might sound like M7 and M4 combined in some retrospect but you soon forget that as Gradient weaves this addictive balance between sounds to a sick groove. Others like '04' build a continuous techno euphoria. This album has something for everyone. Part '06' is relentless with the chords as Part '07' breathes a more melodic direction. All are hypnotic and minimalistic grooves for late night adventures. The album concludes with the deepest cut on here. A more spacey hi-tech journey where chords get lost in the swell of emotion. What a way to close out this killer CD! The album is a loaded with big sounding dub tracks for different times in the evening. The hardest job will be finding a standout. If you are in favor of hypnotic dub techno where a few key sounds work out a wicked groove, Gradient masters this art. You have found your ideal disk here. Gradient holds nothing back on this one.

From New Jersey via The Netherlands: longstanding US craftsman Joey Anderson makes his debut on Deeptrax with his inspiring new album… ‘Exotic Sequence’ 

His fourth LP to date, ‘Exotic Sequence’ is a fully instrumental deep dive into both Joey’s machines and mindset, as he explains himself… “The title ‘Exotic Sequence’ stood out to me because throughout the LP I tended to use a sequencer for the main melody of most of the tracks. Almost every time I approach a track with techno intentions it eventually ends up being deep / housey,” states the artist who broke through 15 years ago on Qu’s Strength Music and has worked closely with the likes of Dekmantel and, more recently, Avenue 66.  

Now at home on the relatively new and positively thriving label arm of Dutch record store institution Deeptrax, Joey tells us where he’s at with a body of work that poignantly reminds us that it’s not the destination that counts; it’s the journey we endure to get there.

In this sense, ‘Exotic Sequence’ is the sound of Joey letting his instruments guide, inform and inspire him. Cuts like the constantly rising and hopeful ‘Sky Children’, the deep 808 bubbles and dreamy reflections of ‘Behind The Valley’ and the emotionally rich ‘Stop’ are just a handful of examples of  Joey being lost in deep flow, channeling the creative energy in his studio. 

It lands exactly three years after his last album ‘Rainbow Doll’, neatly bookending the strangest and most surreal start to any decade we’ve lived through since house and techno culture took root in the 80s. A timeless document that looks forward and back and remains unhurried, thoughtful and crafted with longevity, ‘Exotic Sequence’ is arguably the most honest and frank side to Joey Anderson we’ve heard in his extensive career so far.
