WikiLeaks was also targeted by attackers who used a DNS cache poisoning attack to hijack traffic to their own WikiLeaks-like version. This was an intentional attack designed to keep traffic away from WikiLeaks with some success.


MiTM attacks are also sometimes referred to as monster-in-the-middle, machine-in-the-middle, monkey-in-the-middle and man-in-the-browser attacks. Man-in-the-browser is the most common type of MiTM attack in which the attackers focus on browser infection and inject malicious proxy malware into the victim's device. The malware is commonly introduced through phishing emails. The main objective behind these attacks is to steal financial information by intercepting a user's traffic to a banking or financial website.


During MiTM attacks, cybercriminals insert themselves in the middle of data transactions or online communication. Through the distribution of malware, the attacker gains easy access to the user's web browser and the data it sends and receives during transactions. Online banking and e-commerce sites, which require secure authentication with a public key and a private key, are the prime targets of MiTM attacks as they enable attackers to capture login credentials and other confidential information.


A benefit to password managers, at least some of them, is that they can look at the URL and only use autotype/autofill when on the correct site, which can help prevent pharming since if instead of you go to examp1e dot com it won't autofill your credentials. What I want to know, and can't find anywhere, is whether DNS hijacking or poisoning, when taking you to a different site, will show to the browser, the user, and the password manager as the site you meant to go to or the fake one. That is, if you actually type example.com, and the browser thinks you're going to example.com because it's following the malicious DNS to maliciouswebsite dot com, does it show where it thinks you are or is it somehow able to resolve the actual URL and show that? I realize this is a very unlikely possibility, but I'm curious if the password manager would try to autofill on the malicious site because instead of example.com being resolved as x.x.x.x it's resolved as y.y.y.y, but as far as the browser and password manager know it's still example.com, or if it would go to y.y.y.y but since the actual URL for that is maliciouswebsite dot com that's what would ultimately be shown.


Individuals who use the legitimate site enter the banking domain into their browsers but open the malicious website instead. Most attackers test and verify that the spoofed site is well-made, but occasionally, a few minor errors give the spoofed site away. For example, the malicious website typically has no encryption certificate installed, so the connection is cleartext. An unencrypted connection is a clear red flag that the hosted site is not a banking website. Browsers alert users that a connection is not encrypted, but many users miss or ignore the warning and enter their username and password anyway.


Stealing browser cookies must be combined with another MITM attack technique, such as Wi-Fi eavesdropping or session hijacking, to be carried out. Cyber criminals can gain access to a user's device using one of the other MITM techniques to steal browser cookies and exploit the full potential of a MITM attack. With access to browser cookies, attackers can gain access to passwords, credit card numbers, and other sensitive information that users regularly store in their browsers.


DNS poisoning happens when a malicious actor intervenes in that process and supplies the wrong answer. Once it has tricked the browser into thinking that it received the right answer to its query, the malicious actor can divert traffic to whatever fake website it wants.
