Zoviet France were a big part of my life in the late 80s in New Zealand, releasing remarkable music with remarkable packaging. I was lucky enough to see them in 2012 on a boat in London, my favourite part was to see a sound being created but it taking ages to appear in the mix and travel for minutes through the track. I created this set for an event in 2014, but due to technical issues I wasn't able to play it out. Fast forward to Fall 2015 - a dear friend's 40th birthday cocktail party became the perfect place to test it out. It was debuted on the BoxFrequency.fm radio show "Sun is Shining Dub & Chill" in late December 2015. Elements of trip hop, jazzy beats, and other rhythms.

Cookie Cutter Feat Mercston (Crises Remix)

This month Carhartt WIP Radio is bringing you a show by Adrian Sherwood and his legendary label On-U Sound. During a career of more than 30 years, Sherwood produced and remixed artists such as Lee "Scratch" Perry, Primal Scream, Depeche Mode or Einstürzende Neubauten amongst others. His label On-U Sound, formed in 1980, is worldwide known for cutting edge releases that are rooted somewhere between dub, experimental, Reggae, Post-punk and electronica. Furthermore many On-U Sound releases greatly influenced the sounds of today like ambient and techno. Recently many On-U Sound records of artists and collectives like African Head Charge, Singers & Players or Bim Sherman got re-released and Sherwood himself produced, dubbed and released contemporary bands like the Japanese trio Nisennenmondai. For Carhartt WIP Radio Adrian Sherwood tuned in a mix that grooves between the past, present and future of On-U Sound.

Celebrating 20 years in the music business, electronic duo Pitch Black, allegedly the godfathers of New Zealand electronica, are happy to announce their fifth studio album, Filtered Senses.

Their sound is unique and deeply rooted in the awesome immensity of Aotearoa’s natural landscape: the bass reverberates through the Southern Alps, the beats skitter like cicadas on a sweltering summer’s afternoon, and the dub pours forth with all the rhythms and textures of the lush native bush and rivers.

The secret to their longevity is that if you’re never in fashion, you’re never go out of fashion! In an age when electronic genres and fads come and go, seemingly monthly, Pitch Black have managed to keep their sonic identity due to the blend of two very different personalities and musical styles: soundcloud.com/paddyfree, the manic groove-merchant, and Michael Hodgson, the dark dub-meister.
 
Both renowned individually as solo artists and producers, with Paddy recently co-writing and producing with Moana & the Tribe and Nga Tae and Mike producing and remixing under his solo artist name, soundcloud.com/misledconvoy, they have very different approaches to music which can be summed up as Paddy wants to do it for the crowd, while Mike wants to do it to the crowd. 

The album saw them adopt a new working method - one they’ve dubbed (pardon the pun) remote-control. With Mike situated in London since 2012 and Paddy temporarily based in New York, Filtered Senses was written by swapping files over the web, with an intensive two week mixing session together in Mike’s studio in Hackney to finish the job.

Filtered Senses has one foot on the dancefloor, one eye in the cinema and both ears in psychedelic stereo, with the tracks ranging from the ambient wash of “A Great Silence is Spreading” to the stomping foot tapper of “Pixel Dust”, with everything else in between. 

Pitch Black regularly collaborate with MC’s and vocalists who bring a different groove and a fresh sound to their tracks. Filtered Senses is no different, with the vocals on the album contributed by Alison Evelyn, a Londoner who Mike met at a vinyl night he runs. Her contemplative and observational words fit beautifully into the Pitch Black sound. 

Despite nine years between albums and four years living in different hemispheres, Filtered Senses is instantly recognisable as a Pitch Black album thanks to the unfeasibly large bass and endless delays sprinkled with touches of playfulness amidst the menacing undertones.

'The Inside Track' is side two of a 7" single recorded in February and July 1984 in Auckland, New Zealand, by Stridulators, who were Chris Burt (drums, synthesiser, vocals)and Steve Roach (guitar, keyboards, vocals). Side one was 'Queue'.

Of note: the main tracks for both sides of the single were recorded on stereo cassette tape before overdubs were added on a four-track reel-to-reel recorder.

The single was released that year on the duo's own House of Squirm label (HOS 245).

Pitch Black are Michael Hodgson and Paddy Free. Having pumped their way through New Zealand’s electronic music scene since their inaugural performance at the annual Gathering New Year's eve festival in 1996, they have spent the subsequent years rousing dance floor punters, generating rave reviews, winning awards and gaining thousands of fans across the world. 

Hard to box into a single audio 'genre', Pitch Black is a combination of musical journeys. Their sound is distinctive; ranging from organic ambient beginnings and layered soundscapes to skanking keyboards, cutting acid riffs and thumping rhythmic grooves, with dub being the glue that holds their sound together. One critic has described them as like "Orbital meets King Tubby, or Rhythm and Sound in Technicolor". 

It is their live show that really makes Pitch Black stand out from the rest of the crowd, both sonically and visually. Their tracks take on an added dynamism and their performances reveal the dialectic behind the band - Paddy wants to do it for the crowd, Michael wants to do it to the crowd. Visually they are in another dimension thanks to Michael's cutting edge visuals.

They have toured the world relentlessly, playing everywhere from Amsterdam to Zagreb and the streets of Las Vegas to the Australian outback, supporting acts such as Coldcut, Skream, Easy Dub All Stars and System 7 along the way.
