Our March edition is our very first foreign guest mix, courtesy of dutchman Tsepo! Jan aka Tsepo is a friend of the house (amigo, right?) and a true food-lover. He even did an internship at Tribeca, a famous restaurant in The Netherlands. As a DJ you might know him from residencies & gigs at Trouw (RIP!), De School, Paradise City, Contrair, you name it!
 
The mix goes from jazz to house, funk to beats. Always warm, always full of vibes.

Ever since his first exposure to euro-dance pop as a twelve year-old kid, Berlin native Sascha Funke followed the siren call of electronic music, carving out his own spot at the forefront of leading-edge dance music. A seasoned hunter constantly digging for epic melodies, kicking beats or top-tier records to grace both his studio output and DJ sets, he specializes in deep, sweeping sounds - but always favored sitting on the fence when it came to the occasional shootout between genre trenches.

A well-known purveyor of allusive, pop-infused minimalism, Funke successfully combines the straightforward and the uncanny, all wrapped up in lean and stylish arrangements that don’t need much tools to establish a complex atmosphere - a sort of lock 'n' load romanticism that can be readily experienced on the much-acclaimed and highly influential full-length releases „Bravo“ (2003) or „Mango“ (2008). Both went on to become electronic classics in their own right and remain a rather popular choice on international dance floors to this day.

After establishing his unique musical vision on iconic underground imprints like BPitch Control or Kompakt, Funke has returned to the latter for his more recent efforts with Saschienne, a project he put forth with partner in crime Julienne Dessagne - resulting in 2012’s album „Unknown“, a master class in sparse, but highly effective techno songwriting that found its fair share of loyalists and serves as an ideal primer for Funke’s new solo output with the label. We could welcome him back, but then again, he wasn't really away.

After the release the duo toured around the world and further introduced their work with a dynamic live show. When Funke was not on stage with Julienne or spending his time with her and their son, he was occupying his weekends by playing his current favourite tunes and classics in some DJ booth around the world. The only Berlin-based producer that supports 1.FC Köln then had locked himself in the studio again and produced four new tracks the label Multi Culti, which celebrate techno darkly with melodies full of New Age and Krautrock spheres, cosmic trance moments and a slower BPM power.

As well he released on Tiga’s Canadian label Turbo Recordings the EP “IFA” and delivered four enchanting tracks between bewitched minimal tribal, twisted piano house, stomping psychedelic and space techno. And there is also a new solo album in the pipeline. It will be called “Lotos Land”, will see the light of the day on the Japanese label Endless Flight and presents the 40-year-old as a musician, that transcends deep felt emotions into a multidimensional ocean of sound. Those who would like to hear first impressions of his newest musical output should come to one of his DJ gigs - Sascha Funke likes to play unreleased sounds in DJ sets, which lately go beyond the average definition of techno and house and also presentdisco, wave, electro, cosmic, Krautrock and early electronic dance music. All mixed up with passion in order to kick all dancers into an unpredictable emotional journey, in which their bodies become absolutely unrestricted and bodiless.

Immer wieder dieses norwegische Städtchen Bergen. Kleiner als der kleine Karl, aber mit Björn Torske, der Sex Tags Crew, Röyksopp, Telephones, Annie öfters schon Startpunkt für weit über die Stadtgrenzen wirkende musikalisch-elektronische Rebellion. Gegen Kleinstadtdenken, Skateboarding-Verbot und Langweilertechno. Bård, oder eben Skatebård wenn er durch Europa rollt und auflegt, hat vor kurzen seinen vierzigsten gefeiert, sein unverwechselbarer Bart ist bestimmt auch bald volljährig. Angefangen hat er aber ohne, eher glatt rasiert, mit Pagenschnitt und Fila-Jacke in HipHop-Crews und Metal-Bands. Mit Veröffentlichungen auf Prins Thomas Full Pupp, Untz Untz, Sex Tags Mania und dem finnischen Keys Of Life scheint er mittlerweile das verbindende Glied der skandinavischen Szene zu sein. Sein Kleber ist eine gut haftende Mischung aus schimmernden Italo Disco Perlen, dem Rauch einer heißlaufenden TR-909 und der scando-kosmischen Energie seiner Detroit-Techno Interpretation. Italo, Electro, Oldschool Techno - alle drei haben grundsätzlich etwas gegen falsche Monotonie und flache Emotionen. Auf seinem eigenen Label Digitalo Enterprises zeigt er sich sympathisch: gegen Hype und Insidertum sammelt er immer wieder seine verstreuten Tracks auf CD und macht sie digital für alle zugänglich. Quasi jeder darf den Bård mal anfassen. Und wem der verträumt lächelnd bei einem seiner Live- oder DJ-Sets die Erlaubnis erteilt auszuflippen, springt dann wohl hoffentlich aufs nächste vertraute Arpeggio und fliegt davon.

Mesh Series 004: John Tejada 

A curated series where we commission artists to make an hour long mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce, play out and what they listen to.

John Tejada is a Vienna-born, Los Angeles-based electronic music composer and DJ. Tejada’s professional output of music began in 1994 and has never let up, including four albums for the revered label Kompakt, plus releases on Pokerflat, Cocoon, Plug Research, Seventh City, Playhouse, Defected, and his own label since 1996, Palette Recordings. Tejada has also been responsible for remixing over 100 songs for acts including The Postal Service, Télépopmusic, The Field, Bomb The Bass, Way Out West, Kevin Saunderson, Darren Emerson, Gui Boratto, Simian Mobile Disco and many others. Tejada’s latest venture as Wajatta is a new musical collaboration with international star Reggie Watts, having released their debut album, Casual High Technology, in 2018 and latest album Don’t Let Get You Down in 2020 on Brainfeeder. 

Tejada has traveled to more than 30 countries DJing and performing live at clubs – Berghain (Berlin), Fabric (London), Rex Club (Paris), Womb (Tokyo) – festivals such as Dance Valley (Netherlands), Decibel Festival (Seattle), Dekmantel Festival (Amsterdam), Detroit Electronic Music Festival (aka Movement), Mutek (Montreal and Mexico), Sonar Festival (Spain and Tokyo) and Sync Festival (Greece), as well as esteemed venues such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and twice at Walt Disney Concert Hall, both in Los Angeles.
