Lascivio Bohemia - Mentes Brillantes

A group of Bayaka men, including Zalogwé and Balonyona, singing and playing geedal under a palm shelter. In this recording, Zalogwé grabs a microphone and pretends to be a pop star, addressing listeners in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic. Recorded by Louis Sarno on the afternoon of 22nd April 1986 in the Central African Republic. 

Louis Sarno, a pioneering field recorder, has been recording Bayaka music in the rainforests of the Central African Republic and Republic of Congo since 1985. His ethnographic collection of more than 1000 hours of audio and thousands of images is curated by the Pitt Rivers Museum.

We currently curate more than 1000 hours of Bayaka music from the rainforests of the Central African Republic recorded by Louis Sarno and a unique collection of recordings from Vanuatu by Raymond Clausen, among many other collections. Our archive also includes music from Colombia, India, Uganda and China, and we are in the process of digitising, cataloguing and making them available. Also included in this stream are recordings of ethnomusicological, anthropological and ethnographic talks, sound art, and other audio gems from the collections at the Pitt Rivers Museum.
