Embodying the wave of fresh ideas and distinctive musicianship emerging from
South Asia, Sijya’s artistic voice is a gradual rebellion against preconceived
notions of approach, forms and styles led by her ability to strike a balance
between the known and the outlier.
With records that showcase a defining commitment to originality without losing
upon emotionality and live shows that create the most immersive atmospheres,

the New Delhi artist has emerged as one of the most hotly-tipped up-and-
coming talents from the region’s alternative music space.

As a composer, producer and designer, the multi-faceted talent lays down
textural abstractions of her inner monologue onto musical and visual canvases
alike to deliver the most well-rounded artistic offerings. Dreamy untamed
synth layers and raw rhythms come together with emotion-led vocal lines
creating a concoction of art pop, downtempo and ambient discoverable through
her debut single ‘Have To Make My Bed’ as part of boxout.fm’s compilation
‘SUCHI SELECTS’ and her debut EP ‘Young Hate’.
Released via British music royalty Matthew Herbert’s Accidental Records, an
institution known for launching artists with an independent-minded approach,
‘Young Hate’ and their respective music videos showcase Sijya’s creative
stamp as a music and visual artist at its most synchronous and far-ranging.
The 6-track release has received support from notable outlets such as BBC
6Music, Crack Magazine, Kaltblut, NOWNESS, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Feel My Bicep,
NTS, Rolling Stone India, The Wild City, A Humming Heart, Indulge Express
and Rinse.FM while Sijya has since been championed by the likes of Four Tet,
Machinewoman, Openlab, NARR Radio and more. The release has also been
celebrated through guest remixes with the companion EP ‘Young Love’ and
earned the artist the title of “one to watch” by multiple platforms.
Meanwhile, Sijya has been extending her unique artistry to the live setting –
opening for The Cinematic Orchestra on their India tour, performing on stages
like SAUCE India and Echoes of Earth, delivering a Boiler Room set, creating
a bespoke A/V show at Mumbai’s G5A and touring across the UK to perform
at spaces like Tate Modern, Bristol’s Trinity Center and London’s Servant Jazz
Quarter. The tour also saw her lead workshops for Saffron UK, provide guest
mixes for NTS and Noods Radio, and perform at YES Manchester alongside
Nabihah Iqbal, for whom Sijya would also release a remix via the prominent
label Ninja Tune. All of this within little more than a year of making her live
debut with the coveted opening spot at the 2022 edition of India’s premier
music festival Magnetic Fields.

We Listen w/ Sijya

Stuart Mitchell's ambient interpretation of Rest Of My Family's spoken word about the social-work-through-art project's journey. The work attempts to take you on a journey to rediscover your lost connection with and forgotten responsibilities towards rest of your human family.  
He made this song using the frequencies captured from the DNA of the mitchondrial Eve (is the matrilineal most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of all currently living humans).

The core chord progression, bass line & melodic elements of this track came first and were fairly well established early on, however the drums changed countless times during this track’s evaluation. We really wanted hard-hitting drums with lots of energy but wanted to avoid the obvious. 

Scarp is a geological term which is slightly too technical to get into but it’s basically a specific type of erosion. After the intro when the beat drops on this it feels like everything is falling away to make way for something powerful.  The drums and some of the melodic phrases also have this ‘falling away’ effect.

@Irisarri is a multi-instrumentalist, record producer, mastering engineer and curator living in New York. His music often has a mournful, elegiac quality where ostinato phrases tap into minimalist ideals while atmospheric layers of effects suggests a more cinematic approach. In all, his compositions are deeply emotive and epic, like a symphony recording that’s been rescued from attic entombment after half a century. 

Starting out in Seattle during the early 00's, Irisarri quickly became an integral part of the Seattle music community while organizing electronic music shows and experiential performances at concert halls, churches, and DIY art spaces. Throughout the mid-00's, he served as co-curator for Seattle's legendary Decibel Festival, focusing on the ambient, leftfield techno and experimental curatorial. As the new decade rolled in, Irisarri started in 2011 his own music festival, Substrata – the first event of its kind in North America. Held at a converted chapel in a quiet residential neighborhood, the critically-aclaimed intimate event was responsible for breaking in the Pacific Northwest new artists working in the modern classical field (Nils Frahm, Jacaszek, Christina Vantzou, to name a few), and bringing to American shores influential artists from abroad. Substrata ran for five sold-out editions in Seattle, plus an offshoot event at London's Cafe OTO (2014). The festival is currently on an extended hiatus.

After signing with Ghostly International in 2008 and releasing Glider (his debut album as The Sight Below), Irisarri started traveling frequently to perform live throughout the world. His concerts at museums, churches, synagogues, and other non-traditional performance spaces explore the physicality of sound. Combining an array of heavy metal bass amplifiers, multiple loudspeaker configurations, synthesizers, bowed guitars, notebook computers, video images, and lighting, Irisarri decontextualize the audience’s relationship to the venue, creating an immersive, otherworldly environment.

Swedish songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Menke, who recently released her debut EP Till Havet via Size/Cosmos, will release a remix of her track ‘Nattskärran’ from acclaimed German electronic producer Christian Löffler.

Using Menke’s hushed melancholia as a backdrop, Loffler injects ‘Nattskärran’ – a stunning interpretation of Karin Boye’s poem of the same name – with deep house beats and underlying synth lines, a far stretch from Menke’s more folk-tinged music.

Speaking about the track, Loffler says: ‘Nattskärran’ moved me from the first second. Instantly I knew that the darkly emotive Scandinavian timbre of her voice aligns with my artistic world perfectly."
