I lost a dear friend from Ann Arbor this year, Mark Carlson. He was deeply into music, as a player, a singer, a fan, a popular karaoke host, and as a music collector, trivia expert, and amateur historian/critic. We connected over our shared love of music, and when I told him about my work as the Earl of Bandwidth, he asked if I would teach him the ways of beat making and bedroom production. We envisioned the low-fi hip-hop project SLUMBURGER, and came up with was this funky, sloppy mess of tracks produced from 2007-2008 in dozens of late-night sessions, often after he hosted Karaoke at The Arena. After I helped him tear down the sound system, we would head to his place for he afterparty. There, we produced this funky, sloppy grab-bag of tracks, including original sample-based compositions, mashups, and cut-ups of other people's songs and movies. It is truly lo-fi: the original tracks were under-edited, under-mixed, and under-mastered on Cool Edit 2.1 running on aging computers. The resolution of the final mp3s ranges from low to very low. In honor of Mark, and all the music in him, I think it's time Slumburger dropped. RIP buddy, much love. - The Earl of Bandwidth
