Exclusive: Juan MacLean - Skies Open

New Yorker Juan MacLean contributes his track Skies Open to Hard Fist's second installment of their La Dansa compilation. Known and appreciated for releases on label's like Will Saul's Aus Music or Jennifer Cardini's Correspondant and DFA, of course, Juan MacLean musically travels to France to celebrate his first appearance on the French imprint that hits floors like a fist in your face – hard. Skies Open is a driving (dark) disco-esque, partly cosmic and 8-bit freaky track that can be split into two parts. While at first Juan MacLean concentrates on a montonious almost didgeridoo-like repeating chord that is combined with glitchy and wobbling bleeps the track is added a way more blissful note in the second part that kind of seems like a salvation as the listener was heavily involved with the darker and freakier vibe in the beginning. However, it's this contrast that is intriguing, as if the 'sky opens up' to make one see the blue again as it pushes the grey from the clouds aside.

La Danse #2 will be released on Hard Fist on April 22nd, 2021.

Blindetonation hits double figures with a suitably notable new EP from Aurum Miles. Pardon Moi, Il Est Vilaine and Thomass Jackson all serve up sizzling remixes to complete this interesting package. 

Miles hails from Lithuania and has grown up around shoegaze, rock and British indie, and was later touched by electronic sounds. A keys, drums and guitar player who mixes up all these influences with narcotic weirdness, he has released on this label before and always impresses. 

The excellently elastic ‘Few Feets’ is a sleazy, low slung machine made disco jam with skewed synths, punk hits and dirty bass. Exotic vocals and dark spoken words flesh out the wonky groove and the whole thing is hugely intoxicating. ‘Easy Come Easy Go’ is a menacing number with more filthy bass guitar riffs that snake along an urban sounding landscape. More dehumanised vocals bring an edgy feel and cosmic synths serve to trip you out. Last original ‘Mojo’ completes this brilliant disco freak show with off kilter synths and guttural guitar riffs that add up to dark cosmic excellence. 

First to remix is Berlin Based New Wave Duo Pardon Moi aka James Brook and Thomas Freudenthal. They flip ‘Few Feets’ into a surging track with shooting synths that reach to the skies. It’s a spine tingling cut with plenty of intergalactic energy.  Then come the duo of Il Est Vilaine, who make twisted electronic music and get their machines dancing on labels like Dialect. Their take on ‘Easy Come Easy Go’ is libidinous and dripping with a moody tension. Propped up by rugged bass and coloured with naughty chords, it’s a psyched-out and vital version.  Lastly, label regular and esteemed modern disco man Thomass Jackson works ‘Mojo’ in to a characterfully chugging, flipped out number with scale-riding melodies and percolating bass that takes you on a real trip. 

This is an inventive package of perfectly macho dark disco.

Initially described as “superlative 25th century electronic exotica” by Cowboy Rhythmbox themselves, the fourth EP from Phantasy’s in-house trouble and hitmakers received continued support from top jocks including Dixon, Jackmaster and Marcel Dettmann. Now, it’s dynamic lead track is rejigged, expanded upon and shot through with analogue energy by two equally inventive producer pairings.

Fellow outsiders on the inside of the house of house, Israel’s finest Red Axes take the first turn, coaxing the cosmos out of the original and allowing the bewildering vocal samples to lead the way through waves of more than pleasurable cosmic tension. Soon, with the timing just right, feet to pedals and strobe to hand, the pair unleash a series of distorted guitar licks that blow dust off the stacks, even throwing in a sharp blast of their trademark surrealist vocals for extra freaky FX.

On the flip, Marvin & Guy zone out and hone in on the original’s EBM-indebted elements to contribute a trippy, wave-riding electro rework that oscillates irresistibly. Teasing listeners with a playful, almost naive synth line, the mood shimmers instead with uncompromising acid, as the pair ultimately push the modulars into strange and hypnotic territories to get lost in.

Today United Colors of Rhythm is born, the project of a Chilean who moved to Spain for love. Love in its most traditional concept, but also love for her relationship with music. And this is how, from Fernanda Arrau (Pirotecnia / Playground), renowned Chilean artist, United Colors of Ryhthm (UCoR) is presented.
It is a new label with great ideas to contribute to our electronic music scene, artistic proposals that Fernanda herself defines as 'quite singular things' in which both the musical and visual aspects hold equally importance.
There is room for art in all its expressions at United Colors of Rhythm, without forgetting the main objective: to explore the nuances of electronic music. The first VA in November ‘18 promises to demonstrate an example of this eclecticism, wih artists including : Thomass Jackson (Calypso Records), Balam (Playground Records), Gabriel Ferreira (Ninefont Records, Elias Deepman (Panal Records) and Fernanda Arrau herself.

The French producer Fred Berthet is not a newcomer in the world of the electronic scene, he is considered as a certified veteran in this field. Under his pseudonym Dj Steef he is still one of the best choices in terms of Edits, Nu-disco and Down-Tempo. As when he signs under his own name his productions for House and Deep-House .
His formula is simple, in an energetic and deep electronic atmosphere, he works on technics as subtle as effective. Fred signs the 18th release of the label by delivering an EP composed of 3 tracks, Electronic and Modern Deep-House. 

"Ethylinks" open the Ep with an hypnotic, electronic and deep atmosphere, led by a strong bassline, making the pressure growing up till the end.

« Scalla » is the second track, bringing a special balearic vibe with a kind of old school treatment to lead the listener in a psychedelic slow trip.

« Furtif »  ends the project with an evolutive and melodic construction of hypnotic synth loops, reaching a climax in an epic breakdown. Perfectly shaped for clubs !

Moscow's best brothers duo Simple Symmetry has found time between their endless gigs from one festival to another to record a new thriller single for Low Budget Family curated by Sergey "Orange" Pleshakov and Moscow legend Leonid Lipelis. "Nar" in arabic means fire, and it is a big dancefloor killer, the beauty of confusion and anxiety throughout the breathing and illusive meanderings of its bass manipulations and oriental cut-ups, this is proper dancefloor fare while letting the track drift into just the right amount of weirdness. 
Remixes comes from Iñigo Vontier and Israeli wizard Nadav Spiegel aka Autarkic who turn the track into a long percussive groove that turns the track on its head, takes the original and electrifies it with bleeps and pulsing synths, that gets witchy right from the start with ethereal arps, and vocal stuffing that summon sensation of heat of fire. And at the end what can we wait, when all this people get together? - A triumph.
