Talia Jimenez aka Tangela is a force to be reckoned with - highly skilled DJ, host of the wonderful ‘Citrus’ on FBI radio and co-founder of a sleuth of boundary pushing events including dstreet, club < and now the newly established minutiae festival. Having these many hats and excelling at them all demonstrates Tangela’s intimate knowledge of her audiences and ability to tailor exceptional experiences accordingly. For dancefloors, that usually means a focus on generating energetic narratives combining enveloping soundscapes, pervasive depth and hypnotic detail to effortlessly guide dancers on spirited expeditions. With deep and diverse involvement in all sections of the electronic music community in Eora and beyond, I’m very excited to chat to Tangela about how she does it all. A self-described "rave-generalist", Sard is a DJ, producer, and Live PA artist living in Detroit. Combining his passion for perfect dancefloors and the deeper technical aspects of dance music, his performances and productions have maintained a steady placement in the Midwest and beyond. I first became aware of the Harmony label when they released ‘Natives’ an EP by prolific techno producer Alan Backdrop in 2019. Since this time, I’ve followed their lead, been enchanted by their always impressive musical outputs and enamoured - yet only from afar by their magical parties. Made up of multi-talented individuals, as a collective they coalesce as a group of kindred souls united by a shared wellspring of boundless creativity. Their events are always a spectacle, whether collaborating with the likes of Midgar, Kalahari Oyster Cult and X or running it solo, they have the power and passion to transform almost any space into a uniquely vibrant, community-minded party place. From UNESCO-listed libraries, gymnasiums and forest floors, no event is too big or too out there for Harmony to pull off. Across their music, events and DJ sets, they ooze a sense of profound intent whilst being effortlessly playful. In a world that can sometimes feel unnecessarily, individualistic the Harmony crew continues to shine a light on the power of bringing together our creative minds.

Angus is a talented producer, always building rich atmospheres perfectly suited for a dance floor. He recently put out an incredible EP on one of my favourite local imprints @moonshoerecords - one of those releases that really brings about sentimental feelings of the warmth and vibes of home.

My name’s Lucie (she/her) and I live deeeep in South London.

This set was originally recorded at Goo Night in Spanners, a snug, intimate venue in South East London. Imagine a roomful of free, sweaty bodies moving to the rhythm, surrounded by dense red-tinted haze. The atmosphere was sexy and sticky that night. 

A little disclaimer regarding the recording. I had to re-record the second part of the set at home due to sound quality but the essence of it is in no way compromised 🙂

+ 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫?
I wanted to put together a set focusing on spaciousness and the interplay between heady depth and liberating playfulness, exploring ways in which the two can meaningfully coexist. The idea was to allow the audience to release their body fully on the dancefloor so obviously there had to be a good amount of energy running through the veins of the set. But at the same time, I really wanted to tickle their minds, open doors to imagination, introduce depth so if one really listens in, there is a whole world of sonic magic to explore - a complexity both sonic and emotional. 

+ 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮r 𝐫𝐞𝐤𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐛𝐨𝐱 / 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐠𝐢𝐠?
The process always starts with digging for new music that sets the tone for the playlist or when packing my record bag. I look for a specific flavour of sounds for each gig, thinking about the context in which I will be playing and trying to understand what possible directions I can take. 

Once I select those fresh tracks, I start building the rest of the playlist around it, first more generally and as I listen back with the set approaching, I keep refining it until it feels like it has enough substance. At the same time, I make sure it is generous enough so I can cover a lot of ground if the gig goes in a different direction than what I expected. It’s always a balance of keeping one’s artistic integrity while working with the crowd to create a powerful experience for everyone.

Terra Obscura is a collaborative event I run together with my close friend Alicia. We started the series back in March 2022 at Ormside Project which is still our home to this day. Me and Alicia have an impressive overlap in terms of music taste but we are also quite good at challenging each other's ideas which I believe is important for a healthy growth of any project. We are both into a lot of deep, intricate music within the ambient & downtempo, techno, breaks & bass realm to give you a very rough idea about our programming. 

When we are building a line-up, we always throw around a lot of names and then try to find a common thread among the artists we want to book. We imagine how their sound would work in a particular slot and how their sets would flow into each other so there is a sense of development throughout the night. This process is usually quite long but in some ways really intuitive. 

What is very important for us is to approach the event as a whole, a night that effortlessly moves forward along a curatorial narrative, one step at a time from the start to the very end, moving from horizontal ambient to sweaty dance as it progresses.

NERVE (RES, A Colourful Storm, Steeplejack) is the guise of Naarm-based electronic general practitioner Joshua Wells. As a DJ, producer and live artist NERVE makes and performs a limitless brand of techno that explores notions of drum and bass, breaks, noise, electro, dark ambient, and industrial. NERVE’s live sets are undeniably body music, steely textures punctuated by drum and bass inflicted rhythm workouts capable of whipping any crowd into a frenzy.

NERVE joined me live for 260 of Passing Notes with this guest mix of incredibly hot and heavy drum and bass.

The cherished rave enchantresses provided a high-octane Passing Notes guest mix featuring their tracks from the Enchanted EP, remixes and unreleased gems.
