Lush atmospherics and rowdy dance floor favourites by two of Melbourne’s finest, Millú and Pjenné. These two sonic soulmates have been busy at work channeling their predilection for ethereal 90s electronica and meditative leftfield sounds with the start of their record label, Companion. Intrigued to hear more, we got in touch to get the low-down on the new project and life in Australia, among other things. Furthermore, they found a gap in their busy timetable and laid down a beautiful mix for us, which glides from contemplative mind soothers to fist-pumping party vibes in a seamless, 70-minute transmission.

Penny's curatorial expertise and long-standing dedication to the Naarm/Melbourne scene have established her as a pillar of the city's sonic landscape, and both her love of musical discovery and unmistakable influence are felt deeply from afar. 

Pjenné's mix is a enchanting trip through fields of wonder, equal parts honey and gossamer, moving and blissfully sublime. Tender hues paint the air while fervent warmth fills the aching heart. There are few selectors out there with a repertoire as consistently profound as Penny's, and yet one feels we've barely scratched the surface of what's to come. Thank you Penny!

Episode 225 of Passing Notes tonight celebrates one of Naarms most brilliant artists, Rings Around Saturn.

It’s hard to know where to start with an inimitable artist like Rings Around Saturn. Rory McPike’s expansive back catalogue demonstrates his unwavering commitment to creative exploration. With nearly a decade of releases under a cosmopolitan suite of aliases (Dan White, Bleekman, Cactus Head, Pickleman), Rory’s ability to compose such diverse sounds, at the highest of quality is truly profound.

From earth shattering bass, DnB and jungle to nostalgic, sun-drenched shoegaze and quite literally everything in between, Rory is a master of his analogue electronic craft. His forthcoming album ‘All Things Shining’ set for release on Best Effort Records showcases 10 forward thinking tracks that effortlessly incorporate uniquely, skittering synths, swirling ambience and crystalline, glistening electronica into an emotive and immersive package. This release looks back at new age ambient whilst propelling us into a futuristic world of contemporary IDM.

Rings Around Saturn - PN 225

It's been a year since I uploaded my last Safe Radio episode. Damn. That was certainly not my intention. I actually had in mind to do three to four episodes a year, but it only came down to one due to various reasons [read: L I F E!]. It was a long one, though. hehe.

But here we are! FINALLY another episode in the Safe Radio series. I'm very happy and excited about the result, but moreso relieved that I already now have planned out episode two in season seven. It means that I'm on the path of doing four this year. So far at least. Hell yeah! 

This first episode of season seven includes no less than sixty nine tracks ranging from my favorite headphone music over hazy downtempo and japanese dub to no nonsense club trax. Different styles, tempos, old, new, unreleased - u name it. 

If you're still reading this long post I'd like to express my gratitude to all the people [still] supporting and listening to my stuff. It truly means a lot. Especially when I put so much energy and time into what I do. THANK YOU!

Talia Jimenez aka Tangela is a force to be reckoned with - highly skilled DJ, host of the wonderful ‘Citrus’ on FBI radio and co-founder of a sleuth of boundary pushing events including dstreet, club < and now the newly established minutiae festival. Having these many hats and excelling at them all demonstrates Tangela’s intimate knowledge of her audiences and ability to tailor exceptional experiences accordingly. For dancefloors, that usually means a focus on generating energetic narratives combining enveloping soundscapes, pervasive depth and hypnotic detail to effortlessly guide dancers on spirited expeditions. I first became aware of the Harmony label when they released ‘Natives’ an EP by prolific techno producer Alan Backdrop in 2019. Since this time, I’ve followed their lead, been enchanted by their always impressive musical outputs and enamoured - yet only from afar by their magical parties. Made up of multi-talented individuals, as a collective they coalesce as a group of kindred souls united by a shared wellspring of boundless creativity. Their events are always a spectacle, whether collaborating with the likes of Midgar, Kalahari Oyster Cult and X or running it solo, they have the power and passion to transform almost any space into a uniquely vibrant, community-minded party place. From UNESCO-listed libraries, gymnasiums and forest floors, no event is too big or too out there for Harmony to pull off. As a DJ, producer and live artist NERVE makes and performs a limitless brand of techno that explores notions of drum and bass, breaks, noise, electro, dark ambient, and industrial. NERVE’s live sets are undeniably body music, steely textures punctuated by drum and bass inflicted rhythm workouts capable of whipping any crowd into a frenzy.
