For the 38th instalment of the Stora Skuggan mixtape series we welcome Sweden’s own prime “failed popstar” slash analogue acid alchemist, @yourplanetisnext Drawing inspiration from legendary electronic composer Shiho Yabuki, this ultra-serene droplet was recorded during a recent stay in Tokyo. Built around Japanese ambient music, Your Planet Is Next first checks in his listeners for treatment at a soothing Ghibli-style spa, then guides them through dark, narrow alleyways with the help of his magical lantern—eventually leaving them run free in a far-reaching flower field to watch quirky, animal-morphing clouds drift by. Yeah, it might sound odd, but it’s all in there. Enjoy!

Thanks to his London-born parents, Barnaby Bennett developed a deep interest for music early on, growing up with a rich record collection full of the likes of Bowie and Roxy Music. @barnaby-bennett is a musician, DJ and radio host, having presented the brilliant Lavender Kite Audio Research on NTS Radio @user-643553014 since 2018 — an eclectic and exploratory genre-spanning show, soon hitting its 100th episode. Exploring themes of happiness, nostalgia and dreams, Barnaby’s two mixes for Stora Skuggan are kaleidoscopic journeys through ’60s and early ’70s psychedelic pop, garage rock, and soul — many of them on his favourite format, the cute 45 RPM vinyl record. Enjoy these beauties with the incoming spring.

Another Barker masterclass.

Sam Barker asks more from techno. The artist known simply as Barker is one of electronic music's most consistently conscientious and curious producers, challenging listeners to question the norms we accept about our shared culture—whether it's the music that fills the room, the process behind it, or the purpose of the space itself.

British-born yet based in Berlin since 2007, Barker forged a connection to many of the city's leading institutions, including Ostgut Ton, and over the course of a long and fruitful relationship, he carved out one of the more singular paths on the club and label's roster.

Not one for orthodoxy, Barker challenged four-to-the-floor techno framework in favor of melodic experimentation. By decentering or completely stripping away the typical trappings of kick drums and claps, his productions are both light and immersive, buoyant in low-end presence and shimmering in weightless space.

Six years after Utility, his sophomore album Stochastic Drift arrives this month. Shaped by pandemic-driven reinvention, it burrows deeper into harmonic twists and freeform drift. "At some point I became conscious of the process," he wrote of his latest album. "The only thing you can do is embrace the uncertainty and see every change as a potential positive.”

Consider his RA Podcast another sequel. Like his much-beloved 2019 mix for FACT, it's a collage of live recordings and a fitting expression of the artist's own internal spring. RA.982 radiates wide-eyed optimism: percussion cloaked in foggy, swirling pads and trance-like chords, neatly synched in synthetic glimmers. 

All in all, it's an hour of music crafted for contemplation, collective euphoria, or heads-down epiphany—or for that matter, any moment, really, its emotive depth seemingly endless.

RA.982 Barker

Composer and vocalist @kaitlynaureliasmith loves modular synths — especially the Buchla 100 and Musical Easel. Modular synths are (somewhat ironically) often extremely precise examples of ”happy accidents”. In Kaitlyn's case, they add a conceptual ingredient in her way of working, similar to the playful and surprising structure after which she has arranged her latest mixtape. With the 37th STORA SKUGGAN-mix, Kaitlyn delivers a two hour-long, boundary-blurring, playful trip: a walk on a huge xylophone in a sunny video game where polyrhythmic, funky, African rhythms intermingle with advanced, technological, neural pathway-messages. Give yourself a good brain massage, it will be a treat!
