Refuge Worldwide: Plain Sailing Guest Mix

Plain Sailing channel the electrifying ethos of their party series in mix 072.

Andrew Moore and Peter Gibney are the duo behind Belfast rave crew Plain Sailing. Launched in October 2019 with their first party headlined by Valencia’s Pepe, Plain Sailing pride themselves on bringing international artists to the city for their debuts alongside bigging up local legends. The parties are as diverse as the sound that tunnels throughout the Belfast scene, putting on events that include everything from UKG back-to-backs, grime mash-ups, techno and DIY hip hop. Their guests include the likes of Mor Elian, Barker, Willow, Carlton Doom, Cailin, Holly Lester and more. 

With events on the back burner for now, the duo have expanded the Plain Sailing brand to incorporate a record label with releases from Son Zept, Buckfast Terror Squad and Kobina. They’ve also launched a feature element to their content, bringing a collection of opinion piece, artists interviews and round-ups.

This week on the FMB Mixtape Series, we welcome Plain Sailing, the Belfast-based DJ duo & party crew. First, we caught up with them to find out what they’ve been up to lately…

We’ve managed to keep ourselves fairly busy over lockdown – we launched our Plain Sailing zine as a way to stay connected to artists we love and also launched a PR agency here in Belfast – Harbour Music Society. It’s been great having an outlet and having the opportunity to still pursue our passion. It’s been a pretty stressful year nonetheless, but there’s finally a little more optimism in the air.

The mix was recorded in my (Pete) flat with the windows open and sun shining. It was recorded on a little pioneer controller, which has come in handy for recording mixes, not having to constantly borrow gear or head to a studio. 

We wanted to cram as many genres as we could in there and stuff you might hear at our parties. We have such a wide range of influences and we wanted to showcase that. The mix spans UK techno, breaks, garage, R&B and grime – even a cheesy edit or two. 

Up next…

We’ve just started planning our next run of gigs which we hope to be able to announce fairly soon and our PR agency and blog keeps us super busy. As much fun as it is, we miss the community aspect music has brought us and we just can’t wait to give all our mates a hug and get back to playing and putting on parties.

Belfast based duo HOTLINE have been making waves through the local circuit for some time now despite their young years. Locking in regular performances at Shine and UFO has brought them a dedicated fanbase, but it's their grime and UKG infatuation that we find most interesting - they've a wicked eye for an edit!

Next up is one of Belfast's brightest young DJs and producers - Reger, sailing us through an eclectic mix of atmospherics textures, percussive grooves and UK bass and breaks. 

Since first bursting on the scene, Reger has contributed on important Belfast label Extended Play, a stand-out track on this years MINDS compilation and was a winner of Paul Woolford's Splurgecore contest! Earning accolades from some of the best in the business. 

Reger's mix encapsulates the sounds of an ever-evolving DJ and producer, who's only getting started.

We've been sneaking releases from Fly By Night Recordings into our sets over the last couple of years - most notably D-Nite's killer True Force EP from May last year - so we were naturally delighted when the label got in touch to premiere a track from their upcoming various artists release coming out March 4th, with all profits going to UK based, pro-choice, ant-harassment charity Sister Supporter.

We've opted for the speedy g vibe of Billund The Kid's 'U So Fine' - familiar vocal samples manipulated to feel like they fit with the modern UK soundscape blends with large wubs and screwface energy on a track designed to light up the dance.

Blurring the lines between techno, grime and UK club, DJ ADHD has been gathering support from the likes of Skrillex, Four Tet, India Jordan and Special Request for his wicked high energy blends. 

Following his debut release ‘Vortex’ and more recently ‘Rips’; a club weapon created alongside Nikki Nair (both released on Pretty Weird), his release schedule for 2022 is filling up with solo releases and projects with Chloé Robinson, Nikki Nair and Villager, making sure that his club focused sound is heard on dancefloors around the world.

We're absolutely delighted to welcome Dialogue residents Gray & Tom Faulkner for number 45 in the mix series. These guys have been behind some of the most special nights in Belfast, choosing to ignore passing fads and trends in favour of sticking to what they know and love - great underground club music with a dubbed-out, minimal edge.

Dialogue were very much an inspiration for us when we started throwing parties, so naturally we're stoked to return the favour. This mix was recorded in the wee hours of the morning in Tom's kitchen with nothing but a couple of turntables and a mixer, and it captures that intimate, after-hours euphoria beautifully. 

For the heads, by the heads. Lock in and enjoy two masters at their craft.

Kasper Bjørke is no stranger to finding the sweet spot between emotion and groove. The Danish producer and selector's accolades are known far and wide - from being remixed by Nicolas Jaar to his excellent 2018 album on Kompakt Records, The Fifty Eleven Project - and now he's teamed up with the excellent Prom Night for a remix arriving on Prom Night Records on June 10th.

As a DJ he has performed at Panorama Bar, Rex Club, Robert Johnson and more, always bringing with him an emotive blend of Italo, funk, sleaze and house, and his remix is no different; a floaty trip through sun-kissed, shimmering waters.

Prom Night & Brynjolfur - Rain Dance (Kasper Bjørke Remix) - Plain Sailing Debuts

Experimental bass mutations are the order of the day for production duo Traces. The pair mad dubplates for Loefah and Mala in the past - also making an appearance on Swamp81's Rinse residency - providing odes to the future facing FWD>> sound through their dark and heavyweight aesthetic.

Their latest self-release is titled 'Yolk Psyche' and is a deeply personal project that documents the lifestyle of hospitality work, using raw field recordings warped and twisted into experimental and clunky dance music.

They say, "explosive, textural and short, it aims to capture the stressful balancing act of dealing with long-term physical and mental strain against the short-term gratification gained from working in this industry."

It's no secret that we're massive Rory Sweeney fans. The producer has carved out a distinct lane for himself within a sea of the same, consistently bringing something new, fun and innovative to the table.

ULTRAPOLLEN has come through with a wicked remix of Rory & Kayleigh Noble's 'Needy' and it blends two of our favourite things - the best parts of the Sweeney-verse and a cloudcore, dreamy percussive aesthetic. The result is a tears-in-the-club bass banger that will have you crying front-left.

We premiered an experimental bass mutation from UK duo Traces last year (who have made dubplates for Loefah and Mala in the past), and now Theo, one half of the pair has his sights fixated firmly on the percussive delights that exist within the 100BPM - 140BPM tempo range and beyond.

'Residual' is a monster debut from his new solo moniker; a bass-dancehall hybrid which blasts through malfunctioning electronics, brain-melting percussion and steppy post-dancehall aesthetics. Watch ya bass bins and play this one loud.

Dublin based party and platform Ethereal Skies, founded by Mark Davis aka darkmavis and Sean Murray mark their first label release with Aerga Vol 01.

Aerga, aka "the air or the ether" (as Gaeilge) comes in the form of a packed VA compilation featuring both established and emerging artists from the emerald isle and afar presenting avant-garde and genre bending club music.

Dublin based avant-garde electronic music party and platform come through with a killer VA spanning the genre-defying, experimental and futuristic. 

Headed by Irish DJ and producer darkmavis; the boundless possibilities of electronic music are what make up the Aerga projects. Your listening experienced is enriched with everything from dreamy ambient, to pulsating hardcore, heavy bass and hard-drum, hyper maximalist takes on jungle, pure experimentalism and of course euphoric progressive and hard cuts of trance.

'Use Me' by Dublin and Give Us The Night mainstay R.Kitt is a cut of tranced-out, dreamy club designed for those 5am moments when the sun starts to make it's way through the warehouse windows and hangs in the air.

R.Kitt - Use Me [Ethereal Skies] - Plain Sailing Debuts

The name Myler has become synonymous with the finest rave inspired techno, hardcore and jungle, and rightly so. He's contributed to Italian imprint art-aud's infamous rave tapes in the past, and has found comfort in the home of Belfast outfit DSNT - a rave utopia where it's residents are free to be as weird as they want.

Here, Myler has linked up with fellow DSNT associate Nate White, under their collaborative Buckfast Terror Squad alias, to produce a wicked and emotional composition. Don't let the humorous moniker fool you - these guys are serious about their jungle.

Strap Calluses features samples taken from The UK's Young Re-offenders - a documentary exploring a gang of re-offenders based on the Saxton Road estate in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. 

That, combined with ferocious breaks and ravey atmospherics, reminiscent of a bygone era, makes for a track that will bring as much euphoric pleasure in the club setting as it will dancing around your living room.

Buckfast Terror Squad - Strap Calluses - Plain Sailing Debuts

Jordan has a wicked eye for an edit. The co-founder of Belfast's The Night Institute incited something close to a riot when his rework of Jan Hammer's 'Crockett's Theme' was debuted during his AVA Festival x Boiler Room performance, and he's back at it again with a four track edit EP on his own Nocturne label.

The artists stock has continued to soar, with mixes locked in for Feel My Bicep, Truants and Ninja Tune's So Solid Steel, in addition to releases on Abandon Silence, Huntley and Palmers, !K7 Records and Tiga's Turbo Recordings, all of which have been warmly received from some of the best belonging to contemporary dance music - Bicep, Or:la, Gerd Janson and more.

This adaptation of Company B's 'Fascinated' is perfectly suited for when the lights go up. Friends up on each others shoulders, arms waving wildly in the air. All dancing as one to the same elevated groove.

Company B - Fascinated (Jordan Edit) - Plain Sailing Debuts

Emotional dance music (made with real tears) coming straight outta the salty coasts of Bangor as Born Sleepy label head Optmst soundtracks those sleepy mornings and late nights.

Most days you can find Optmst in an abandoned college building in the East of Belfast, which is now a home to around eighty different artists of all shapes and sizes. Here, looking over the industrial ruins of a once mighty shipbuilding city, he conducts live jam sessions alongside fellow Born Sleepy associate Spireview. It's here that Inner Child was created - through clouds of smoke, emotional instinct and dreams of the subconcsious.

We put out a wicked drum & bass track from the Rotterdam via Belfast artist earlier in the year, and he's sticking to the UK vibe with an innovative remix of Roker's original; brimming with 2-step rhythms and stirring atmospherics that are as haunting as they are beautiful.

Roker - Lovin' You (Kessler 3am Rework) [Spilt Milk Records] - Plain Sailing Debuts

In pursuit of bringing strange and absurd sounds to the clubs of Dublin, the city’s Bitten Twice crew release their first collective VA – featuring artists Rory Sweeney, Fomorian Vein, Julia Louise Knifefist and more.

We got the link to debut ‘Plastic Death’ from Rory Sweeney – a fiercely unpredictable and exploratory track that blends the golden age of happy hardcore with the frenzied, experimental footwork patterns that seem to draw influence from Sinjin Hawke, Zora Jones and their Fractal Fantasy collective.

Rory Sweeney - Plastic Death [Bitten Twice] - Plain Sailing Debuts

Made in London, remixed in Paris and Japan and released in Belfast, G3 follows up his debut LP with 'Koriko' on Rudimentary Records; a tale of rediscovery that spans grime, dubstep, electronica and minimalistic footwork.

The project bloomed as a symbol of the producer’s time spent in the English capital and his experiences there, even containing a track called ‘ø’; an ode to the Corsica Studios club-night of the same name, presided over by Hyperdub label founder Kode9.

Today we debut the Amor Satyr flip of ‘Coming Up, Yuliya’ – a bubbly, bass-driven, carnivalesque lullaby from the French artist. Dreamy melodies, razor-sharp percussion and high velocity energy provides the G3 original with a complete re-work, blending the distinctive styles of both artists in a colourful coming together.

Another wonderful outing by Rudimentary Records, who continue to fly the flag for diverse, UK influenced zest in Belfast.
