The Sounds of GEM returns once again. This one will be GEM’s first solo show of the year as she flicks through some of her favourite weighty club tunes she’s recently added to her extensive collection.

Broken Britain, late 1994. Amidst a welter of Tory sleaze, John Major's 'Back to Basics' campaign is dead in the water. No one is buying the traditional-family-values mantra of the hypocritical, festering
ruling classes.

Meanwhile, that same year’s hastily misconceived Criminal Justice Act attempts to criminalise entire musical genres, and by extension the nation’s irrepressible youth. The CJA’s famously reductive edict, characterising 'rave' as "wholly or predominantly categorised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats" lumps acid house, techno, disco, breaks—all of it—together; a cloddish cudgel against
unlicensed parties everywhere.

Though the spirit of the nation's young hearts hasn't been extinguished, perhaps the music begins to reflect a slightly dampened, more introspective mood: driven further underground, sent indoors and out to the borderlands by authoritarian over-policing.

As seasoned organisers abandon Britain to create raves in more permissive parts of Europe, there is a trace of optimism, however—the much-vaunted high-speed Eurostar railway connecting England with
France is finally open, signifying ongoing musical and cultural aﬃliations. It's hard to believe now, but the dream of the UK in Europe is still alive, and dance music is an integral element.

Into this intense, contradictory culture, in which acutely fertile dance scene clashed directly with an ossified establishment, came The Magus Project, who some 30 years ago in a small bedsit in Fulham, took the sounds of the moment and distilled them into five electronic objet d’art, hitherto completely unheard.

If a tree falls in the woods, does it truly make a sound? The Aerohead casket of DAT tape curiosities, rare components and DIY musical alchemy raises a similar question. Can music never heard at the time
speak to the mood, the moment, the magic? Listen for yourself, to an indefinite past meeting an indefinable future.

PREMIERE: The Magus Project - Boomwa [What Sonic?]

Luxus Varta comes to Specimen Records with Magnetic EP, dropping six new tracks of intelligent and intricate electro.

With a discography spanning respected labels Solar One Music, Brokntoys, Trust, Klakson, and his own imprint, In Abstracto, Luxus Varta has solidified his reputation as one of the most distinctive voices in the electro scene. This release demonstrates further his knack for constructing complex, evocative tracks that work for the deep and dark dancefloor moments.

The EP opens with the deep, brooding bass of title track, Magnetic, setting a moody and immersive tone. It then shifts into the off-kilter machine funk of Broken Tube, before leading into the sharp electro beats of Gelatin 55. Colour Splitter continues the journey on the EP with a dense, atmospheric composition rich in sound design, followed by Post-Mortem Meeting which is another perfect example of Luxus Varta’s melancholic overtones. The release closes out with Linoleum, dense with layered synth work and driven by shuffling beats.

London-based electronic artist Sunden unveils his highly anticipated debut album, Minor Coda, a deeply personal exploration of therapy, catharsis, and the fluidity of human experience through the lens of leftfield club music. Set for release via Loose Lips, a label and club night recently celebrating a decade at the forefront of London’s underground scene, Minor Coda is a strikingly emotive collection of tracks that seamlessly weave intricate breakbeats, immersive soundscapes, and euphoric release. Martha, Tom Ravenscroft, Fliss Mayo, and Om Unit, Minor Coda cements Sunden as a vital new voice in the electronic landscape. Drawing from the glitch-heavy textures of 90s IDM, the spectral atmospherics of ambient Drum & Bass, and the emotive weight of artists like Burial and Andy Stott, Sunden crafts a sound that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. His ability to channel raw emotion into kinetic, club-ready forms makes Minor Coda an essential listen for those seeking to connect and simultaneously let go.
