We arrived on Planet Splurge in a chronological time frame in 1979. When we started using it as a descriptor for the kind of musical style and genre that was the result of our collaboration. A meeting of very low grade technology; With a mildly cavalier regard to  orthodox production technique. Improvisation in both musical and mechanistic areas soon became pretty central. We started on a sound on sound tape recorder. In a bedroom. (as you do)
Loops were a very important aspect. But do please bear in mind that i literally do mean tape loops. Your actual reel to reel magnetic tape spliced together. We did not actually have drum machines, sequencers, multi track recorders or samplers. But irregardless of that we managed to make something happen anyway. Altho those carried away with notions of 'high quality' production and recording standards and aesthetics were pretty horrified by what we did. Here on Planet Splurge.
When we quite spontaneously arrived at the place of naming what we were doing and splurge just sort of popped up. We did not mean monetary extravagance, spending binge. But a low fi, low level technology, track layering extravagance. And also the 'not over thinking'  implied meaning, that I think the word splurge also carries.
