 1. We heard quite a deep dub influence in the mix, where does that inspiration come from?

For me, dub reflects an aesthetic approach that I like and strive to hear in my mixes. I am also fascinated by the influence that certain production techniques related to dub music had on various dance music genres, making them - in my opinion - more pleasing and interesting.

2. How do you go about digging new music?

I have a meticulous way of wading through obscure labels and artists on discogs.com, hopping from link to link to link (the research process being probably at least partly influenced by my training as a social scientist). Apart from that, I use Soundcloud and Instagram to keep track of current releases. Then I also like to dig for actual records in actual stores, especially when I’m visiting new places.

3. What is your relationship to disco and hip hop? There were a few superb selections we really enjoyed! Thanks for the great mix!

I used to produce hiphop instrumentals for my rapping friends as a teenager, making extensive use of sampling. This, in turn, led me to dig first into jazz, then soul, then funk, and finally disco music. Naturally, my first DJ sets were composed of the more dance-y tunes of these genres. From there, house music wasn’t far. What has always striked me about house - and what I am still looking for in the genre - is a specific approach that reminds me of hiphop: raw, organic, sometimes rough, yet subtle and reduced, combined with a DIY-aesthetic.

Fresh monothematic mixes presenting one musical key flavor in each show.
Planet 8 tells us: The idea for this mix came to me while learning about the ongoing expedition of Voyager 1.
I wanted to sonically capture the satellite’s aimless quest through space and time, the distance to its creators ever-growing, the connection to earth slowly fading.
Here’s what might have run through Voyager’s circuits towards the end of its lifespan, if it had the ability to express itself verbally: ‚I can hardly remember anything because it was so beautiful. I was out there in space, out there in the wide open, so far gone and yet so close to home. It’s the inside that counts.‘

Future Sounds Of Cosmic #1 - 24.11.2024

ZYGOOT was the name of a late 70s dutch electronic band pioneering a distinct sound between what would come to be called ambient and an almost classical loop-based compostition approach. 

Despite all original recordings being destroyed by band member Jasper van Kerkhof in 1979 due to creative differences, parts of the visionary music of ZYGOOT could be recovered through space and time by means of modern technology and esoteric techniques of the Self. 

What has once been lost has been found and the creative conflict at the heart of ZYGOOT's disappearance has finally been resolved by the synthesis of two reincarnated human minds in a bedroom studio in Leipzig, Germany.

What is the great tragedy of our lives? The passing of time. Music helps us in dealing with this tragedy. It takes passing moments and emotions and puts them into an artefact that can be stored and reproduced and thus in a way help us overcome the eternal passing, at least for a bit. Music is our way of defying and conquering death.
