At the idyllic Splore Festival in New Zealand last February, a collaboration between two performing international artists was born. A plan was hatched by Mikee Tucker of Loop to bring the world beats of New York-based DJ & producer Nickodemus together with the Jugalbandi vibes of the Maharaj Trio from Varanasi, India. The result is The Maharaj Project: 001 – a blend of traditional melodic improvisation from India and the organic electronic beats of Nickodemus.

Each song was recorded live in one-take in Auckland with legendary engineer and former bass player for Cat Stevens, Bruce Lynch, over two sessions.

Vikash Maharaj and his sons Prabhash and Abhishek make up the Maharaj Trio – a North Indian musical family from Varanasi, whose musical tradition stretches back 500 years. With Vikash playing sarod, Prabhash on tablas and Abjishek on sitar, the trio play a unique style of improvised Indian classical music with elements of traditional jugalbandi. Well known as a producer and DJ, Nickodemus has been travelling the world since the mid-90’s.

Tracks one through four feature the Maharaj Trio showcasing their traditional sound which has seen them tour the world. Tracks five and six feature the Trio collaborating with Nickodemus, who brings his dance-floor perspective to the trio’s ancient ragas.

The Maharaj Project: 001 showcases the merging of two musical cultures, and two artists renowed as innovators in their field.

Uji’s years of traveling as an ethnomusicological globetrotter and documentarian are the deep roots that give form to his music. There is a story underlying every beat, echoing the unique cultural expressions encountered through his personal experiences.  

La Descarriá is a manifesto about freedom, specifically relating to the struggles of women and how they are often judged unfairly by society. The original track was written by Argentine vocalist Corina Lawrence, produced by Uji, and also features the provocative Buenos Aires rapper Miss Bolivia. Uji decided to put another spin on the original production for his solo album, giving the song a newfound dance floor groove. In La Descarriá, Uji paints an audio landscape that takes you to the high plains of Bolivia, pairing it  with a Tarantino style guitar riff and then brings you to a banging 808 inspired club beat.

In order to create the music video, Uji used archival footage that he filmed over the years while immersed in South America researching its rich musical and cultural heritage. In the “La Descarriá” video we find images from traditional festivities and rituals in which music plays an important role and shows Latin America’s deep rooted syncretism and amalgamation of influences. Images in the video shift from scenes from La Quebrada de Humahuaca’s Andean carnival in the north of Argentina to Montevideo’s Afro-Uruguayan Candombe llamadas, from the Pim Pim dances from the Wichi people on Argentina’s border with Bolivia; to the Afro-Peruvian festivities in Chincha, among others. 

“Having immersed myself so deeply into the heart of Latin America has been a life-changing experience. What I saw and heard during those intense journeys is now embedded in all the music I create. There is a real struggle for cultural diversity to survive and since these travels I’ve made it my personal mission to try and show the world how rich this continent and its people really are.”

The Frohlocker have accrued from a periodical club session of the same name, which was brought to
life in Kaiserslautern (Germany) in early 2006. By mixing a wide variety of groovy, breaky and bass
oriented musical styles, they early became a name in the Global Beats Movement. Through the years
they played in many Cities and Festivals meanwhile their style always meanders through the rich
diversity of electronic sound, which is reflecting in their different productions as well.

Florcita is a fusion of the original Huayno from Peru of the 70's and a pushing swingbass. The focus
lays on the emphazising of the versatile and rich scale of traditional Latin music from the Andes, cost
and tropical areas. It's a respectful collaboration of a cultural human legacy blended and revived in a
contemporary but crossover electronic vesture, full of rhythms and exotic moods.
On the creative side, there are no boundaries, but it's more difficult when it comes to the approach
to provide emotional tunes that makes you dance immediately.
