‘A farewell to idolatry, where culture is absorbed into nature, like a body back into the fertile soil. Written as a 27 club survivor, lamenting the young dead, no longer young and celebrating the spectral presence of iconised peers. Reflexive and self-aware of the problem of over-identifying with the fictional performance of the solo act in various guises or archetypes: the rockstar or trapstar. Auto Life is a practical attempt at a weird re-hybridisation of otherwise seemingly divergent strands of popular music, conflating stylisations usually segregated by genre.

Auto Life was written as a collection of songs for eventual live performance. Recording music is absurd—an act in which you initially perform to no-one. The inclusion of a sample of crowd noise in ‘Fameless’ is the music studio equivalent of a laugh track being added to the soundtrack of a sitcom—unable to give up on disappearing horizons completely and imagining another context for performance in which an actual audience beyond the performer is present.

Autotune Punk—as a music of antagonism that resists from within, bending the lanes of a machine that flattens out the vocal performance to a given scale. I can still express feeling—even angst—but the machine doesn’t care. Refusing its own funeral, emulating the dead—it’s a Rock simulacrum. A renewably performed myth. I broke the spell. I just heard it as it was. The sacred framing of presence makes the pop idol always-already-dead by turning them into a symbol and an image—undead, un-ageing and endlessly reproducible within a commercialist visual culture.

The music which I would grow up listening to would later become a tool towards first facing, maybe later dismantling—or at least bending—the structures in which music was still being written, performed and recorded into existence. My emulation of and interest in pop—and popular—music is not in irony. I love this music—yet I question the context and conditions through which it has come to exist and continues to change shape. Opening up the horizon of pop to a new kind of strangeness, where the familiarity of the pop song disappears into blissful distortions and mixed signifiers towards a world in-between, otherwise unknown’.

On the winding roads of escape, running away from the burning city's suffocation, in search of air, Cecilia drowns in the thick, elemental romance of Sexilia island.

The landscape oozes and recalls the radical desire of adolescent souls, a chaste and mystical resistance which flutters and strolls above through ditches, railroad edges, highway exits, stinking alleys owned by starving cats.

Sparse and sculptural breaths, the songs are drunk with melancholic infatuation.

“Summer in Sexilia” is a sensory encounter with the great despair in which the lover's courage takes shape once again, sublime, hanging on the memory of the shining stars.

In the hallucinated Summer of Sexilia, the ground trembles, the hands get dirty and the world craves for real tenderness and silent ecstasy.

6G is the child of a hollow moon, unwritten histories of permaculture deities in the levant, pagan conspiracies about haunted birthrights, texts buried in lunatic obscurity, communication with the evil smile of a goddess, bells designed to be wrung three times in the night, childish blood games, farmers with occult crops.

The duo of Oxhy and Susu Laroche have chosen the name The Fertile Crescent, evoking one of the cradles of human civilization as much as a (un)healthy devotion to the power of the lunar cycle. Musically, it reeks of post-industrial folklore ripe with solemn tones and conflicting bits, combined via the mocking dream logic of a trickster spirit. A skeletal presence of melody in a sparse, ceremonial ambiance that can even welcome thunderous rolls of breakbeat, like tapping from the energy of every ritual that has scarred the land in time. Following the record is like attempting at drawing a psychic topography of those same rituals, manifestations, tragedies and games, it’s like mistaking the broadband network for the Ley lines but still succeeding in conquering its occult power.

There’s a lived-in quality to the sound of Racine’s Amitiés. Named after the French word for friendship, the Montréal-based Quebecois artist follows an extended time spent indoors to contemplate what it means to be isolated and in one’s own body, while also staying connected. The album is a follow-up of sorts to Quelque chose tombe (“Something Falls”), released in February 2020 and a kind of accidental prophecy for the crisis that was to come.
Amitiés disintegrates before your very eyes. Opening with a roughshod iPhone recording of Racine playing his parent’s harmonium, the creaky acoustics of "Mon amour je ne guéris jamais" slowly degrade into digital simulations of dreadful organic beauty. That track and the rest of the LP gives the feeling of an abandoned building; a sense of frayed, earthiness dusted with the wisdom of time. And yet, it’s almost entirely made from simulations. Clipped Native Instruments violin patches punctuate the churning atmospherics of “Arête coincée dans une amygdale”. The lonely gongs and bells of “Grosso” resonate in a gust of synthesised ambient. Vocal plugins and the very occasional YouTube samples of a recorded voice are sped-up, glitched, pitched and scrambled into indecipherability. These vocal apparitions rise and fall into the sonic ether like individual ghosts of human contact. They’re bold and expressive, deeply melancholy and yet full of the potential for joy and an awareness of life’s beauty.

It’s in this dearth of social interaction—the heady psychosis of too much solitude—that Amitiés’s tone and mood lies. A score for the numb dissociation from internal chaos and alienation, the album’s sense of acute distress is assuaged only by the small network of collaborators and influences it draws from. Long-time friend and peer Justin Leduc-Frenette (aka Keru Not Ever) contributes drum programming to “Mon amour je ne guéris jamais”. A last-minute reworking of the untitled “Sans titre” by German duo Arigto matches the weight and timbre of Racine’s sooty post-classical soundscapes.

Ultimately, Amitiés is a very human response to an inhuman environment. It’s an intimate homage to friends and the mysterious effects of distance, while somehow finding healing in hardship.

Undivided, unified, the overwhelming sense of oneness. Feeling and experiencing this was her strongest desire since the departure, a deep longing. The collective 'one' disected, distributed and proliferated without her. Did she feel spaciousness or emptiness?

With a handful of releases out on various pioneering imprints (including longplays RISC Chip and Meme Booth via Conditional Records or the latest contribution to the groove series by Warsaw based label outlines), the producer, programmer and live-coder Mike Hodnick is one of the leading figures representing a movement of computer-centred music production, recently labeled as algorave. Since we are devoted fans for quite some time, the Platonic's are proud to present Mike Hodnick´s latest project under the prolific Kindohm alias - 'Deserted / Reclaimed'.
Sequenced live on a drum machine, the diptych stretches across four vast sonic plains, bounded by curvy dunes formed by countless TidalCycles code bits, constantly pouring over like the grains of scorching and shiny sand. Full of paradoxical rhythm twists planted into the ever-bending landscape, Deserted / Reclaimed reads as a fragmented and sometimes petrifying ride towards the chaotic percepts of the monumental surroundings, dissolving in the thermal inversion somewhere far on the horizon.
