The National Park Service and the National Park Foundation have teamed with U.S. Olympic gymnastics hero Dominique Dawes to encourage folks to learn about lesser-known Park Service monuments and sites. Dawes, a member of the celebrated 1996 “Magnificent Seven” women’s team, recently toured three NPS locations as part of the “Find Your Park” campaign: The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality Monument, and Frederick Douglass National Historic Site.

WASHINGTON — A D.C. organization that runs yearly summer art camps to keep kids connected with their imprisoned dads is expanding its support system to help high school students navigate the college application process.

The facilitator of the inaugural Hope House D.C. College Challenge meeting, Thalia Bishop, told a small group of teens and parents that the routes to and through college aren’t always traditional.

If you've ever heard a woman say “I don’t need a man to raise kids or take care of me,” one author says that's perfectly fine.   

Carmen Hope-Thomas says it’s awesome that single, career-minded, upwardly-mobile women have the means to care for themselves and others if need be. 

But Hope-Thomas, who has been married more than a decade, dishes her reasons to get hitched in her book “Why Marry a Man You Don’t Need? A Candid Conversation About Marriage, Money, Success and the Black Woman.”

The book is specifically written from a Christian perspective. It also addresses some topics of concern within the African-American community, but Hope-Thomas says the discussion can transcend different communities.
