Planet Rhythm Techno Session Vol. 2 - December 2024 by Jack Wax

Yesterday would have been Lee “Scratch” Perry’s 89th birthday. Alongside Osbourne “King Tubby” Ruddock and Hopeton “Scientist” Brown, Perry is considered a foundational figure in dub music.

Dub, and the sound system culture it grew from, are perhaps the most influential movements in modern music history.

DJ Kool Herc is a Jamaican-born migrant to the U.S.A that organised parties on the streets of the Bronx, inspired by the sound systems in his hometown, Kingston. When Herc jumped on the mic, imitating Jamaican dance hall MCs, he lit the spark for a new sound that would become known as hip-hop.

Back in Jamaica, the pioneering dub producers were reconstructing tunes from the dance hall in experimental and psychedelic ways using custom mixing desks and homemade effects racks.

Their work introduced numerous ideas that we take for granted today. 1. The music producer can be the central figure. 2. The mixing desk is a musical instrument 3. Music doesn’t need to be instruments and lyrics, instead it can focus on the manipulation of sound, space and energy.

The manipulated dub versions of dance hall reggae tracks became known as remixes. Remix culture was co-opted by New York’s disco scene as legendary producers like Larry Levan & Frankie Knuckles developed new ideas into an emerging sound called house. 

Across the Atlantic, the Windrush generation of Jamaican migrants between 1948-1971 brought dub and sound system culture to the UK. Jah Shaka was part of this migration, later building his hypnotic, bass-heavy sound system in South-East London. 

When house hit the UK shores, it wasn’t long before Jah Shaka’s devotees were reinterpreting the new sounds through the prism of their bass-driven upbringing. Jungle, drum and bass, UK garage, grime, dubstep and drill all ensued, each in their own way indebted to dub.

From hip-hop to hardcore, ambient to amapiano, there isn’t a genre of music around today that dub hasn’t influenced, yet the magnitude of its impact is perhaps overlooked in modern discourse.

As a small way to highlight this, I’ve made a mix of modern tracks that wouldn’t sound the same without Lee “Scratch” Perry’s guiding light.
